3 I NSTALLING THE R OUTER General Site Require ments T o ensure the proper working of the r outers, and to prolong their service life, the installation site should meet the r equirements de scribed in the following subsections. Require ments on Environment 3000 DSL Family must be used indoors.
22 C HAPTER 3: I NSTALLING THE R OUTER The r outers also have rigor ous demand s on the content of salts, acids and sulfides in the air . These harmful gases will spee d up the aging pr ocesses of certain parts and cause a more rapid rusting of the metal parts.
Precautions 23 Lightning Pr otection Requirements Many measures have been taken to pr otect 3000 DSL Family from lightning. However , if the lightning intensity exceeds a certain r ange, damage to the router is still possible.

4 C ONFIGURING THE R OUTER Setting up Configuration Environment Connecting the router to a console terminal T o set up a local configuration environmen t, simply connect the RJ45 connector of the console cable to the con sole port on the router , and DB25 or DB9 connector to the serial inter face of a PC, as shown below .

Upgrading Application Program and Boot ROM through XModem Protocol 35 It is recommended to upgrade the software under th e guidance of the technical support personnel. In addition, when upg rading the router , note to match the version of the Boot ROM software with that of the main software.
