3 Check ing the Supplied Ac cessories 1. Confirm that all the supplied accessories ar e contained in the bo x. If an item is missing or damaged, please contact our Canon Authorized Service F acilities or the Canon Customer C are Center . The machine unit The following ac cessories are included in the machine.
4 User Sof t ware CD -ROM Drivers and Sof tware The drivers and software included in the CD-ROM supplied with this machine are as follo ws: F AX L Drivers Printer Driv er Y ou can print from an application to the machine once y ou install the printer driver on your computer .
5 Supplied Manuals Read this manual first. This manual describes setting up the machine and installing the software. Be sure to r ead this manual before using the machine. Star ter Guide Basic Operation Guide e -M anual Read this manual nex t. This manual describes the basic use of the machine.
6 2. Remov e the pack ing materials. * The location of the pack ing material may differ , depending on your model. 1. T ake the machine out of the plastic bag, and then carr y it to the installation site . Hold the grips using both hands. Carry the machine using both hands.

8 Gently shake the toner cartridge from side -to- side five to six times . This part (a plastic part attached to the end of paper) is also a packing material. Be sure to remove it. Remove the packing material. Lift the tab. Place the toner cartridge on a flat sur face, and then lift the tab.

The serial number is located on the rating label centered on the rear side of the machine (a character string of 3 letters and a 5-digit number).
10 L oading P aper 2. Load the paper , and then adjust the paper guides. 1. Lift the dust cover . Load limit guide Load the paper . Load the paper until the edge of the paper stack meets the back of the paper cassette. Spread the paper guides. Spread the paper guides a little wider than the paper size.

Place the document tray in the machine. Additional prepara tions for printing Place the output tray in the machine .
12 Connecting the Handset Connecting the P o wer C or d Do not connect the USB cable. Connect the USB cable when installing the software. Ensure that the machine is turned off . Plug the power plug into the power socket on the machine . Plug the power plug into an AC pow er outlet.

14 3 . Register the fax number and unit name . Pr ess [ ] or [ ] to highlight <Set Up Now>, and then press [OK]. T o display the “Fax Setup Guide ” if you highlight <Set Up Later>, press [ ] (Menu) → <Fax TX Settings> → <Fax Setup Guide>.
15 4. Selec t the fax receiv e mode . The receiv e mode is set to <Aut o>. → Pr oceed to Step 5. • Receive faxes automatically . • A handset or an ex ternal telephone does not have to be c onnected.
16 5. Connect the telephone line . Pr ess [OK ]. The screen that appears varies depending on the r eceive mode selected. Connect the machine to the telephone line connector . The fax settings and connections have been complet ed. Restart the machine for the settings to take effect.
17 6. Change the telephone line t ype. By default, the telephone line type is set to tone dialing. Skip the follo wing steps in the procedur e below if you select tone dialing. F ollow the steps in the proc edure below to select pulse dialing. Contact your local telephone compan y if you are not sur e of the line type that you are using .
18 Installing the S of tware 1. T urn on the computer , and then log on as a user with administrative privileges . If you are already logged on, exit all applications that ar e running. Do not connect the USB cable yet. Connect the USB cable after installing the soft ware .
