5 Third-Party Software The following software applications are also included on the supplied Setup Disc. • Presto ! BizCard Business c ard management software from NewSoft Technology Corp. For Mac OS X, run the installer (BizCard/BCRInstaller) from the Setup Disc to install.
6 STEP 2 Installing th e Software System requirements The following system r equirements are recommended for optimal use of this scanner. Computer CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.66 GHz or faster Memory: 1 GB or more Hard disk: 3 GB or m ore available space required for installation of all software USB interface: Hi-Speed USB 2.
7 Installing in Windows IMPORTANT • Install the software before connect ing the scanner to the computer. • Log on to W indows as an Administrator. • Close all other applications b efore installing the software. 1 Insert th e Setup Disc into the drive of the compu ter.
8 4 Click [N ext]. 5 Read the l icense agre ement, and click [I accep t the terms in the licens e agreem ent] and then [N ext] if you agree to it. 6 Clic k [In sta ll] .
9 9 Read the l icense agree ment, and cl ick [Yes] if y ou agree to it. 10 Click [N ext]. 11 Specify whether to install plug-in for Ev ernote, Micr osoft SharePoint and Goo gle docs, and click [Next]. 12 When Capture OnTouch installation is com plete, click [Fin is h].

13 STEP 3 Connect ing to a Comp uter Connecting the Scanner to the Computer Turn OFF the Auto Start switch on the rear of the scanner, and use the supplied USB cable to connect the scanner to the computer. IMPORTANT • Take care not to disconnect the USB cable whil e data is being transferred between the scanner and computer during scanning.
14 STEP 4 Turning the Power ON 1 Raise th e feed tray slig htly while pres sing the feed tray release le ver. 2 Extend the front pane l of the feed tray before opening the enti re fe ed t ray. The scanner turns ON, and the Start button lights. Hint In Windows, a balloon message s uch as shown below appears on t he task bar.

18 Before Using the Sc anner Important Safety In structions To ensure the safe operation of this scanner, be sure to read the safety warnings and precautions described below. Installat ion Locatio n The performance of this scanner is affected by the environment in which it is installed.
19 Handli ng WARNING Note the following precautions whenever using the scanner. Failure to do so may result in a fire or electric shock. ● Never place alcohol, benzene, paint thinner, or other flammable substances near the scanner. ● Do not cut, damage, or modify th e USB cable or power supply USB cable.
20 Disposal When disposing of this scanner, be sure to follow all local ordinances and laws or consult with t he reta iler who sold you the scanner. When sendin g the s cann er for repair s When a request is made for repairs, the scanner needs to be sent to the specified address .
21 Features of t he Scanner The scanner has the following features. ● Compact Size The scanner has a compact size of 285 mm (W) × 40 mm (H ) × 95 mm (D) (11.22" (W) × 1 .57" (H) × 3 .74" (D)) when the do cument feed and eject trays are closed.
22 ● Scan Fir st Pressing the Start button on the scanner automatically starts CaptureOnTouch Lite or Captur eOnTouch and scans the document in the feed tray when you use the Scan First f unction.
23 Names and F unctions of Parts Front View A Docum ent Feed Tray This tray is for feeding documents. Open it when scanning documents. B Feed Tray Release Lever Press this lever to release the document feed tray when opening the tray. C Docum ent Guides These guides ensure documents are fed straight (one on the left and right sides).
24 K Start Button Press this button when you want t o start scanning the document loaded in the f eed tray. When the power of the scanner is ON, t his button lights and indicates the status of the scanner as sh own below. IMPORTANT The Start button may blink slowly when the USB cable is connected and the feed tray is opened.
25 Power Supply The power of the scanner is designed to t urn ON when the feed tray is opened or closed. To turn the power O N or OFF, operate the scanner as described below. Turning ON the Power 1 Raise th e feed tray slig htly while pres sing the feed tray release le ver.
26 Turnin g OFF the Power 1 If the feed extens ion plates and docum ent guides are raised, lower them. IMPORTANT Do not close the f eed tray while the document guides are spread open. This can damage to the scanner and result in malfunction. 2 Clos e the fe ed tra y.
27 Using an Au xiliary Pow er Supply Since this scanner is bus-powered, scanning can be p erformed with a single USB c able. However, scanning can be performed at a higher speed if you us e the power supply USB cable or an AC adapter (sold separately).
28 Basic Operation Do cume nts The scanner can scan documents ranging in size from business cards to A4/LTR. The document sizes that this scanner can scan are shown below. 1) Up to 1,000 mm (39.4") in Long Document mode 3) Plastic cards 2) When us ing the card slot 4) Up to 1.
29 • Scanning the following types of d ocuments can cause a paper jam or malfunction. To scan such a document, make a photocopy of the document and t hen scan the photocopy. There are creases or f old lines. Carbon paper There are curl s. The surface is coated.
30 How to Place Docum ents 1 Open t he feed tray to turn ON the sca nner. (See p. 25) 2 Raise the doc ument guides an d feed extension plates . 3 Load the doc ument.
31 IMPORTANT • When loading a multi-page document, place the pages of the document with th eir edges slightly askew. • If t he document is curved, straighten the document b efore loading it. • The scan ned document is ejected from the front. Do no t place any objects in front of the scanner.
32 • E mbossed cards m ay not be scanned correctly, depending on the type o f embossment. Setting t he Long Docu ment Mode The length of documents that can be scanned wi th the scanner is normally 356 m m (14"), but yo u can sc an documents up to 1,000 m m (39.

34 Scanning in Win dows Scanning with Ca ptureOnTouch Lite (Windows) CaptureOnTouch Lite is a scanning application that comes pre- installed in the scanner. It can be used on a computer that does not have the scanner driver installed. You can f ollow the instructions on the screen to sc an a document and save the scanned images in any f ile format.
35 4 Double- click [ONTO UCHL. exe]. CaptureOnTouch Lite starts, and the main screen appears. IMPORTANT Do not close the feed tray before the main screen of CaptureOnTouch Lite appears. Hin t • T he auto play screen may not appear in some oper ating environments.
36 If you place the next document and click [ Scan], sc anning of the document starts. When scan ning of all the documents is finished, click [ Next step]. 7 Configure the settings related to output an d then output the scan ned imag es. A Specify the file name for the scanned images.
37 In [Multi-tiff settings], specify whe ther to save t he scanned images as a multi-page file ([Save all pages as one file]) or single page files ([Create a file for each specified number of pages]). JPEG You can specify the compression rate of JPEG images.
38 Page Size Specify the page size of the document . If you specif y [Match original size], the pa ge size of the s canned document is d etected and the images are saved at the detec ted size.
39 [Brightness] tab Configure the brightness and contrast of scanned images. [Image processing ] tab Configure settings related to the processing of scanned images. [Feeding] tab Configure the feeding method for documents. [Others] ta b Configure settings for s pecia lized scanning and image processing.
40 Operation in Continuous Scanning Screen When [Enable continuous scanning] is se t to [ON] in the Start screen, the continuous scanning screen appear s when all of the pages of the placed document have been fed. You c an confirm the scanned images and then continue scanning.
41 Taskbar Icons CaptureOnTouch Lite will reside on t he taskbar after it st arts. The icon will appear in the taskb ar’s notification area dur ing this time.
42 Quitting Ca ptureOnTouc h Lite Use the following proc edure to quit CaptureOnTouc h Lite. 1 Click the icon on t he taskbar, and click [Exit] in the menu th at appears. CaptureOnTouch Lite closes. 2 Close th e feed tray. The scanner turns OFF. 3 Disconn ect the USB cable from th e scanner an d comput er.
43 Scanning with Ca ptureOnTouch (W indows) What is Capt ureOnTouch? CaptureOnTouch is a scanning application that allows you to scan a document with a simple operation by following the instruct ions on the screen. CaptureOnTouch is provided with mu ltiple scanning methods that can be selected according to the purpose and application.
44 Exiting CaptureOnTouch To close the CaptureOnTouch window, click at the top of the window. This closes the window, bu t CaptureOnTouch will continue to reside in the system. To quit the C aptureOnTouch application, click (CaptureOnTouch icon) in the taskbar, and select [Exit] from the menu.
45 3 Set the sc an method in the top scre en. A Specify whether to enable continuous scanning. When previewing the scanned image or splitting up a large document to scan in parts, select [ON] t o enable continuous scanning. B Specify whether to scan the document in full auto mode.

50 Scanner Setti ngs By default, CaptureOnTouch scans with scanning conditions that match the document because scanning in full auto mode is enabled. If you want to specify, for example, the scanning mode and document size, you can conf igure the desired scanning conditions in t he scanner setti ngs.
51 Use advanc ed settings d ialog box Configure scanner settings other t han the basic ite ms in the advanced settings dialog box ( scanner driv er). To open the scanner driver, select [ON] and then click the b utton. For details on t he setting items, see the Help of the driver s ettings dialog box.
52 C Preview Controls Control the preview im ages and cancel or cont inue scanning with the following buttons. Settin g the Out put Meth od CaptureOnTouch is provided with various output methods for processing scanned images. The output method specification is comm on to Scan F irst and Select Scan Job.
53 Print Prints the scanned images with a specified printer. W hen you specify this output method, s pecify the printer for printing. Send to ap plic ation Saves the scanned image file in a specified folder and then ope ns it with a specified applicat ion.
54 Launch me thod setting By default, CaptureOnTouch becomes resident in the sy stem when you start your comput er. Clear t he [Make CaptureOnTo uch resident] check box to not make CaptureOnTouch resident in the system.
55 [Theme] Tab On the [Theme] tab, specify the appearance of the main screen of CaptureOnTouch. Select them e Specify the appearance type for the main screen of CaptureOnT ouch with [Select theme]. [Plugin] Tab On the [Plug in] tab, confirm the plugins that have been added to CaptureOnTouch.
56 Setting the Scann er Driver (Windows) When you scan a document in an ISIS compatible or TWAIN compatible application (CaptureOnTouch, etc.), open the scanner driver and conf igure the scanning conditions and other settings. This section describes the configuration and functions of the scanner driver.
57 [Image proce ssing] Tab Set the proces sing method for s canned images. [Feeding] Ta b Specify scanner operations related to document feeding. [Others] Tab Configure settings for s pecia lized scanning and image processing.
58 Color mode Select the scanning mode. • [Adv anced Text Enhancement II] removes or processes the background color and background surrounding text to enhance the text for easy reading. If necessary, you can make the text in scanned images easier to read by adjusting the contrast on the [Brightness] tab.
59 Specifying the Scan Area Configure the following settings when you want to specify the area of the document to be scanned. Spec ify ing an area Specify the are a of the document to be scanned in the Scan Area dialog box, which is opened f rom the [Area] button on the [ Basic] tab.
60 When you w ant to enhance the color red Specify [Red Enhance] for [Color drop-out] on the [Image processing] tab to enhance t he color red in the document. When you w ant to enhan ce contours i n images Adjust the edge emphasis setting on the [ Image processing] tab.
61 Advanced T ext Enhancement II is suitable for scanning a document with a uniform background color and light text and background. If the background is no n-uniform, such as a pattern, the bac kground may not be able to be completely rem oved and the text may becom e difficult to read.
62 When you w ant to set th e scanner co nditions automa tically Set [Full Automatic M ode] in [User Preference ] to scan with scanning conditions that m atch the document. Hint When [Full Automa tic Mode] is selected, [ Color mode], [Page Size], and [Dots per inch] are all det ected automatically.

64 Function Restrictions Depending on Mode Se tting Some of the setting items in each of t he driver tabs are di sabled as follows depending on the setting for [Color Mode] on the [ Basic] tab.
65 Scan Panel Scan Panel is software for controlling scanning operations such as feeding documents and stopping scanning when scanning multiple documents one after the other. Scan Panel runs when [Feeding Option] is set to [Panel-Feeding] in the settings dialog box of the sca nner driver.
66 4 Click [N ext]. 5 Click [Advanced settings] when the following screen appears . Hin t This wizard was not started for the purpose of performing a scanner test s o we recommend clearing all of the check boxes displayed for [ Please select the steps you want t o run].

Aut omat ical ly st raigh tens skew ed ima ges When a doc ument is scanned s kewed, the skewed sca nned images are detected and then straightened.
72 Scanner Inform ation Display and Ma intenance You can display scanner inform ation and perform ma intenance in the advanced settings dialog box opened with CaptureOnTouch Lite. • Click in the advanced settings d i alog box to display the [Scanner Information] screen.

84 Operation in Continuous Scanning Screen If a document is scanned with either Scan First or Select Scan Job when [Enable continuous sc anning] is set to [ON] in the Start sc reen, the continuous scanning screen appear s when all of the pages of the placed document have been fed.

88 Setting the Scann er Driver (Mac OS X) When you scan a document in an TWAIN compatible application (CaptureOnTouch, etc. ), open the sc anner driver and c onfigure the scanning conditions and o ther settings. This section des cribes the how to open and the f unctions of the scanner driver.
89 Setting Basic Scan ning Condit ions This sectio n provides an over view of the basic setting items that are the minimum requirements when configuring t he scanner se ttings.
90 Scanning Documents of Unregistered Page Sizes Configuring the following settings allows you to scan a docu ment of an unregistered page size. When scanning a document of a non-standard page size, select [Add/ Delete] for [Page Size] to display the [Add/Delete Page Size] dialog box.
91 When you do not want to scan colored lines and text Click [Image proc essing] and spe cify the color (red, blue, or green) to be ignored (dropped out) in the dialog box which appears, and that color will not be scanned.
92 When you wa nt to match the orien tation of images to the text when scanning a mixture of pages with differen t text orientations Select the [Text Orientation Recognition] check box. The text orientation on each page is detected, and the sc anned image is rotated in 90 -degree increments to cor rect the orientation.
93 When you w ant to set th e scanner co nditions automa tically Set [Full Automatic Mode] in [Favorite Settings] to scan with scanning conditions that m atch the document. When you w ant to save a scanner d river settin g When you finish configuring a set ting, select [Add/Delete] of [Favorite Se tting s] to sa ve th e sett ing .
94 Function Restrictions Depending on Color Mode Se tting Some of the setting items are disabled as f ollows depending on the setting for [Color Mode] in t he settings screen of the scann er driver.
95 Scan Panel Scan Panel is software for controlling scanning operations such as feeding documents and stopping scanning when scanning multiple documents one after the other.
96 Maintena nce Daily Mainte nance Clean the scanner on a regular basis, as described below, to maintain peak scanning quality. WARNING • When cleaning the scanner and the inside of the scanner, close the feed tray to turn OFF the power and disconnect t he USB cables.
97 2 Open t he feeder c over. 3 Use com presse d air to re move dust and paper par ticles from the inside of th e scanner. 4 Remo ve any dirt from the scan ning glass, separation pad and ro llers insid e the sca nner (par ts show n in the figu re). Use a clean dry cloth to wipe off any dirt on the s canning glass.
98 Replaci ng Consum able Parts The feed rollers and separation pad ins ide the scanner are consumable parts and will wear with scanning. If either the f eed roller or the separ ation pad or both are worn, docume nts may not feed correctly and paper jams m ay occur.
99 3 Open t he roller cov er. 4 Slide the feed rollers to left . 5 Rem ove the fee d roll ers. 6 Attach the new feed rolle rs. Align the notch on the roller with the shaft on t he main unit sid e. 7 Slide the fe ed rollers to righ t. 8 Complet ely close t he roller co ver so that it clic ks into place.
100 Replacing the Separation Pad Use the following proc edure to replace the separation pad. 1 Open t he feed tray. 2 Open t he feeder c over. 3 Remove the sepa ration pad. 4 Attach the new separation pad. Attach the separat ion pad securely until it clicks into place.
101 Resetting the Counters Make sure to reset the scanner’s internal counters using the following procedure whenever you replace the feed roller or separation pad. IMPORTANT This section describes the procedure to use when the Auto Start switch on the rea r panel of the scanner is set to the “OFF” position.

103 Troublesh ooting Common Problems and Solutions This section prov ides recommended solutions to comm on problems. If you have a problem that is not solved by the following, contact your local authorized Canon dealer. Problem 1 The scanner d oes not turn ON.
104 Problem 6 Documents are not scanned according to the settings configured in the scanner driver. Solutions When you scan using a job registered with CaptureOnTouch, the regi s tered job settings have priority over the scanner driver settings. Edit existing job settings, or creat e a new job us ing the desired scanning con ditions.
