4 INTRO DUCTION Thank you for purchasing t he Canon Check Reader CR-50/80. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the machine in order to familiarize yourself with its capab ilities, and to make the most of its many functions. 6 Document Fe eding and Scanning This chapter describes precautions regarding documents that can be handled on this scanner and scanning operations. Documents This sectio n describes the types of documents that can be used and how to place them. CAUTION Treat the documents carefully.
7 Placing Documents Note the following points when placing docum ents on the sc anner. • Place the f ront of the document t oward you. • A maximum of 50 documents or a document stack no higher than 5 mm (0.2") can be loaded at one time. • Move the sto pper to the edge of the document in the d ocument tray in accordance with the document.
8 3 Load the do cume nts with thei r front side s facing rig ht and with their edges flus h against the docum ent load mark. 4 Adjust the Eject Stop per in acco rdance with the docume nt.
9 Troubleshooting This chapter desc ribes the problems that m ight occur in the CR-50/ 80, and how to remedy them. When the Scan ner Is Not Rec ogniz ed The following causes and remedies describe why your comput er may not recognize the scanner. Clear ing Paper Ja ms If paper has jammed, open the Maintenance Cover and remove the jammed paper.
10 2 While lowering t he down the OPEN lever, open the reading unit. 3 Remo ve the pape r t hat h as jam med. If the paper is jammed at the p ickup area: Pull the paper f orward and clear the jam from the Maintenance Cover. If the paper is jammed at any ot her area: Pull the paper forward and clear the jam f rom the nearest opening.
11 The Scanner Do es Not Tur n ON Check the following conditions, and take the appropriate action. The pow er swit ch is no t in t he ON p osition. Turn the switch into the ON position. (See "T urning ON the Power" on p. 14 in Installation Guide.
12 When the Sca nned Image Is Not Normal If there is a problem wit h the scanned image (the image is not sharp or stripes appear), one of the following conditions may be a probable cause. Check the following conditions, and take the appropri ate action.
13 Maintenance This chapter des cribes how to clean and m aintain the scanner. Daily Cleaning To ensure high-quality image scanni ng, regularly cl ean your CR-50/80 as described below. CAUTION • Before you clean the scanner, turn OFF the scanner and computer, and disconnect the power cord from the power outlet.
14 WARNING Do not use flammable liquids to clean the scanner, including alcohol , benzene, or paint thi nner. 3 Spin the rollers while wiping them clean with a firmly wrung cloth dampened with water or a mild detergent. There are 18 roller positions, as shown in the diagram b elow.
15 IMPORTANT Scratches on the scanning glass may cause marks on the images and could cause feeding errors. If there are scratches on the scanning glass, contact your l ocal authorized Canon d ealer or service representative. 5 Gently close the readi ng unit until it clic ks into place.
16 3 Gently close the Mainte nance Cover until it cl icks into place. Cleaning the Ink Jet Nozzles Ink that collects around the ink jet n ozzles may stain your documents or cause the text to appear as scratched. Clean the area around the ink jet nozzles pe riodically.
17 3 Remove th e ink ca rtridg e. For more information, see “Replacing the Ink Cartridge” on p. 18. 4 Use a dry cot ton swa b to wipe off any ink on the ink jet nozzle . If the text still appear f aint after this operation, replace the ink cartridge (See “Re placing the Ink Cartridge” on p.
18 Maintena nce Make the following adjustments to maintain scanning quality. Replacing the Ink Cartridge The ink cartridge needs to be replaced i f the printed text becomes scratchy or faint even if you have cleaned the i nk jet nozzle. The ink cartridge is not included wit h the scanner.
19 4 Push back t he ink c artridge l ock lever in the directi on of the arrow in the diagram below, and pull out t he ink cartridge by grasping the tab as shown in the diagram . CAUTION Do not touch t he ink jet nozzl e right af ter impr inting. The nozzle may be very hot.

21 Adjusting the Separati on Roller Gap If double feed should occur too often, adjust the Separat ion Roller gap according to the following procedure. IMPORTANT • Make sure that the size, thickness, and weight of your document meets the co nditions of this scanner.
22 5 Gently remove on e of the sheet s. 6 Adjust the ga p between the fe eding roller and the separat ion roll er to optimum width. While one sheet r emains in plac e between the rollers, continuously attempt to slide the second sheet (i n front of the remaining sheet) to the right, back through the roller gap.
