3 Chapter 1 Introduction Thank you for purchasing the Canon ima geFORMULA P-208 Document Scanner. In order to fully understand the features of this scanne r and use them more effectively, please read this manual and the manuals shown below thoroughly before using the product.
4 Register Windows 8 at the following locations. After the software is installed from the setup disc, the user manu al is shown below. /Applications/P-208 User Manual.
5 z Equipped with Feeder Up to 10 pages of a document can be loaded and then fed continuously, or one at a time. z Wi-Fi connectivity By connecting the optional WU10 to the scanner, you can operate the scanner and load document from a PC or other device with a wireless connection.
6 Names and Functi ons of Parts This section describes t he name and function of each part. Make sure to read this section and familiarize yourself wit h the parts of the scanner before using th e scanner. Front View/Right -Side View (1) Feeder Cover Open this when cleaning the scanner.
7 Back View (1) Auto Start Switch Use this switch to change the operation mode of the scanner. (2) Eject Outlet This outlet is for ejecting doc uments when scann ing is completed. (3) Theft Prevention Hole (Security Slot) Attach a key chain, etc. here to prevent the scanner from being stolen.

12 Moving the Scanner z When moving the scanner, always hold it with both hands to avoid dropping it. z Make sure to disconnect any USB cables and when moving the scanner.
13 Do not drop the scanner, or subjec t it to impact or strong shock. Should the scanner ever become damaged, immediately close the feed tray, turn the scanner O FF, and disconnect the USB cable. Then, contact your local aut horized Canon dealer or service representative for further information.

15 The scanner drivers provided with the scanner do not necessarily operate on all ISIS or TWAIN-compatible applica tions. For details, contact your application software retailer. Precautions for Use in 64-bit Operat ing Systems The scanner driver supplied with th is pr oduct supports scanning with 32bit applications only.
16 Software Installation 1 Insert the Setup Disc into the disc driv e of the computer. The setup menu autom atically starts up when you in sert the disc into the drive. (If the menu does not start up, execute setup.exe fr om the disc.) For Windows 7/8/Vista If the [User Account Control] screen appears, click [Yes] or [Allow].

18 Important precautions when us ing this device with MAC OS X 10.8 When installing software downloaded from the Internet, the OS security function sometimes generates an erro r message. If this occurs, change the security settings with the foll owing steps, and then reinstall the software.
19 2 Click [P-208 Installe r]. About Installation of Third-Party Software If you open the folder containing the software instead of selecting [P-208 Installer], you can choose third-par ty software applications for installation. 3 Click [Continue]. 4 Click [Continue].

22 Auto Start Switch There is an Auto Start switch at the rear of the scanner for setting whether to operate the scanner as a stor age device. Depending on the position of the Auto Start sw itch, the scanner operates as shown below. • Turn the Auto Start switch ON or OFF before you connect the scanner to a computer.
23 When the scanner is turned on for the first time, the balloon message shown below a ppears on the Windows t ask bar. If you wait a while, automatic s canner recognition will end an d the scanner will become ready to use. When the scanner is properly connected to the compu ter, the (CaptureOnTouch) ic on appears on the taskba r as follows.

25 Scanning the following types of documents can cause a paper jam or malfunction. To scan such a document, make a photocopy of the document and then scan the photocopy. Postcard Busin ess Card Card If you place cards to be fed vert ically, they may not be ejected properly, and cards that get jammed may be damaged wh en you remove them.
26 Loading a document 1 Open the feed tra y to turn ON the sc anner. 2 Load the document. • Before you load the document, thoroughly fa n the pages. • Straighten out the creases and folds at the ends of the manuscript.
27 Loading cards When scanning plastic cards, scan cards one at a time using the following procedure . 1 Open the document f eed tray. 2 Verticall y insert the c ard direc tly into the feed inlet, and with th e back facing up. 3 Adjust the docume nt guide so that it makes contact with bo th edges of the card.

29 2 Open the feed tra y, turn ON the scann er, and then load the document. For details, "Loadi ng a document" on p.26. When you open the feed tr ay, the Start button on t he scanner lights and the auto play screen appears. (1) Click [Open folder to view files].
30 3 Set the scannin g method. (1) Specify whether to enable continuous scanning. When previewing the scanned image or splitting up a large document to scan in pa rts, select [ON] to enabl e continuous scanning. (2) Specify whether to scan the document in full auto mode.
31 When scanning of all the document s is finished, click [Next Step]. 5 Configure the set tings relate d to output and then output the scanned images. (1) Specify the file name for the scanned images. If [Use the settings dialog box of the file name] is set to [OFF], enter the file name directly into the file name field.
32 Starting and Exiting CaptureOnTouch Lite Once you start CaptureOnTo uch Lite it remains present in the system. Double-click (CaptureOnTouch icon) in the taskbar to start CaptureOnTouch Lite and display th e main window. To close the CaptureOnTouch Lite window, click at the top of the window.
33 1 Click (Captur eOnTouch Lite ic on) in the menu bar , and select [Exit] from th e menu. 2 Drag and drop the [ONTOUCHLITE] folder and [CaptureOn Touch Lite for Mac] folder ont o the [Trash] ic on. 3 Close the fe ed tray. The scanner turns OFF. 4 Disconnect the USB cable from the scan ner and computer.
34 Page Size Specify the page size of the document. If you specify [Match original si ze], the page size of the scanned document is detected and the images are saved at the detected size.
35 Advanced Settings You can configure scanning conditions and scanner operations in detail in the advanced settings dialog box. [Basic] tab Configure basic scanning conditions. [Brightness] tab Configure the brightness and contra st of scanned images.
36 [Feeding] tab Configure the feeding method for d ocuments. [Others] tab Configure settings for sp ecializ ed scanning and image processing. You can configure detailed scanner settings in the adva nced settings dialog box. The setting items are ident ical to those in Advanced Mod e of the scanner driver setting s screen.
37 Scanner Information Di splay and Maintenance You can display scanner information and perform maintenance in th e advanced settings dialog box opened with CaptureOnTouch Lite. z Click in the advanced settings di alog box to display th e [Scanner Information] screen.
38 (3) Preview Controls Control the preview images and can cel or continue scanning with the fo llowing buttons . Environmental Settings In the [Environmental settings] di alog box, you can configure settings related to CaptureOnTouch Lite operations.
39 2 Click [Preferences] in the [CaptureOnTouch Lite] menu. The [Environmental settings] dialog box appears. You can configure the follo wing in this dialog box.

41 File Formats of Saved Images You can specify one of the following file formats for scanned images when using any output method other than [Print]. For details, see "About file formats" on p.
42 Exiting Captu reOnTouch To close the CaptureOnTouch window, click at the top of the window. This closes the window, but CaptureOnTouch w ill continue to reside in the system. To quit the CaptureOnTouch applicat ion, click (CaptureOnT ouch icon) in the taskbar, and select [Exit] from the menu.
43 z Open [Applications] - and double- click [CaptureOnTouch P- 208]. z Press the Start button on the scanner (in this case, the main screen of CaptureOnTouch will open and sc anning will start using the scan method assigned to the Start button).
44 (2) Specify whether to scan the document in full auto mode. When you want to specify arbitrary scanning conditions, select [OFF] and configure the scanner settings. -> "Scanner Set tings" on p.48 4 Click the Star t button. The document is scanned.
45 5 Configure the set tings relate d to output and then output the scanned images. (1) Configure the settings related to output. -> "Settin g the Output Method" on p.52 (2) Click this button to output the scanned images. The button name differs for each output method.
46 3 Specify the output met hod of the job. -> "Setting the Ou tput Method" on p.52 4 Click [Output setting ], and configure the outp ut settings. The output setting items differ depen ding on the specified output method. For details on the setting items, see the Help of CaptureOnTouch.
47 3 Click the Star t button. The document is scanned. While scanning is in progress, t he number of pages scanned is displayed in additio n to the scanner settings. When all the pages of the docu ment are scanned, the scanned images are output according to the regi stered job settings and the complete screen appears.
48 When [Check output after scanning] is set to [ON] The Output Confirmation screen appear s before the scann ed images are output. Change the settings for the output method if necessary and then click the output button. The name of the output button differs for ea ch selected output method.
49 For Scan First, configure the scanner settings before you start scanning. When Select Scan Job : For Select Scan Job, configure the scanner settings for each job. Setting Basic Items Scanner settings include the basic items that are co nfigured in [Scanner setting], and the setting items th at are configured in the advanced settings dialog box.
50 Use advance d settings dial og box Configure scanner settings oth er than the basic items in the advanced settings dialog box (scanner driver). To open the scanner d river, select [ON] and then click the button.

52 Control the preview images and can cel or continue scanning with the fo llowing buttons . Setting the Output Method CaptureO nTouch is p rovided wi th variou s output me thods for processing scanned im ages. The output method specification is common to Scan First and Select Scan Job.
53 z Email applications such as Windows Mail or Outlook Express (both of which are standard applications prov ided with the operating system) that support MAPI (Messaging Appl ication Programming Interface).
54 Save in Microsoft SharePoint In an environment in which Microsoft SharePoint has been introduced, you can save the scanned images to a Microsoft SharePoint site.
55 JPEG You can specify the compression rat e of JPEG images. PPTX You can specify whether to add OCR inf ormation to the scanned images. When using CaptureOnTouch Lite, simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese will not display in the [OCR target language].
56 Display setting for when scanner connected Select the [CaptureOnTouch appears when the scanner is co nnected] checkbox to open the main screen of CaptureOnTouch aut omatically when the scanner is connected to t he co mputer. This setting is only enabled when CaptureOnTouch is running (or resident in the system).
57 [Theme] Tab On the [Theme] tab, specify the appearance of the main screen of CaptureOnTouch. Select theme Specify the appearance type for the main screen of CaptureOnTouch with [Select theme]. [Plugin] Tab On the [Plugin] tab, confirm the plugins that have been added to CaptureOnTouch.
58 Launch method s etting By default, CaptureOnTouch becomes re sident in the system when you start your computer. Clear the [M ake CaptureOnTouc h re sident] check box to not make CaptureOnTouch reside nt in the system.
59 [Plugin] Tab On the [Plugin] tab, confirm the plugins that have been added to CaptureOnTouch. Deletin g plugins Click the [Delete] button to delete a plugin selected in the list.
60 Chapter 8 Setting the Scanner Driver When you scan a document in an ISIS compatible or TWAIN compatible application (CaptureOnTouch, etc.), open the scanner driver and configure the scanning condi tions and other settings. This section describes the configur ation and functions of the scanner driver.
61 [Brightness] Tab Adjust the brightness and contrast of scanned images. In addition, you can also click [Gamma] and set the gamma corr ection value for scanned images. [Image processing ] Tab Set the processing method for scanned im ages. [Feeding] Ta b Specify scanner operations related to document feeding.
62 [Others] Tab Configure settings for sp ecializ ed scanning and image processing. When the scanner driver is opened from C aptureOnTouch, the following settings screen of the scanner driver appears.
63 Setting Basic Scanning Conditions This section provides an overview of the basic setting items that are the minimum requireme nts when configuring the scanner settings.
64 Color mode Select the scanning mode. z [Advanced Text Enhancement II] remo ve or process the background color and background surrounding text to enhance the text fo r easy reading. When [Advanced Text Enhancement II] is selected , you can make the text in scanned images easier to read by adjusting the contrast on the [Brightness] tab.
65 Color mode Select the scanning mode. z [Advanced Text Enhancement II] removes or processes the background color and background surrounding text to enhance the text for easy reading. z [Detect automatically] detects whether a document is color, grayscale, or black and white bas ed on its content.

67 Practical Examples When you want to specify the scan area Specify the area of the document to be scanned in the Scan Area dialog box, which is opened from the [Area] button on the [Basic] tab. Select the [Set Scanning Area] check box and then specify the area of the document to be scanned.
68 Practical Examples When you want to delete the images of the blank pag es in two-sided documen ts Set the scanning side setting to [Skip Blank Page] on the [Basic] tab to delete the images of the blank pages in the document.
69 Practical Examples When you want to enhance co ntours in images Adjust the edge emphasis setting on the [Image processing] tab. Click [Image processing] and adjust the edge emphasis settings in the dialog box which appears.
70 Practical Examples When you want to make lines or cha racters in the scanned images thicker Drag the slider for [Character Emphasis] on the [Image processing] tab to make the lines and characters that appear in the scanned image thicker. Click [Image processing], and in the di alog box that appears adjust letter and line thickness settings.
71 Practical Examples How to produce a picture qu ality scan In the [Image processing] tab, clic k [Apply corrections suitable fo r photographs] checkbox to ON. Click [Image processing], and in the dial og box [Apply corrections suitable for photographs] that appears, select [ON].
72 Practical Examples When you want to enhance text that is difficult to read because of fa ctors such as the background of the scanned document Select [Advanced Text Enhancement II] in the mode setting on the [Basic] tab. The background behind the text is removed or processed so that the text is emphasized for better readability.
73 Practical Examples To correct tilted documents and images Place a check in [Automatically straig htens skewed] under the [Basic] tab, and then click [Setting] to display the [Deskew Settings] screen. Select a correction method and click [OK]. Click the [Deskew] check box to ON.
