Chapter 1 Introducing the Enc losure This c ha pter desc ribes of the S tora geW ork s Encl osur e 420 0 family of low volt age differential ( L VD ) disk enclosur es (see Figure 1–1 a nd Figure 1–2). These enclo sures support Wide-U ltr a and Wide - U lt ra 2 s mall computer system in terface ( SCS I ) protocol s.
1–2 Enc losure 4200 Family L V D Disk Enclosu res User Guide Figu re 1–2. Disk Enclosure (Rear V iew) Disk Enc losure F ea tures The Model 4214 enclosure s upports up to fourteen, 1 -inch hi gh, 3.5- inch f o rm factor hard disk drives . This enclosur e is a v ailable in either a rack mountable version (421 4R) or in a tower (4214 T).
Introduc ing the En cl osure 1–3 SCSI Buses The enclosur e supports only W ide-Ultra2 SC SI, wide (1 6-bit) , internal L VD buses. Depending on the h ost interface, th e e xternal SCSI b us, the b us from the I/O module to the host can be either W ide-Ultra or W ide-Ultra2, L VD or SE.
1–4 Enc losure 4200 Family L V D Disk Enclosu res User Guide Status Monitoring and Display The major status monitorin g capabilities of these enclosures include: ■ Displaying the enclosure status .

Chapter 3 I/O Module This chapte r discu sses th e operation a nd functi on of t he L VD disk enclosur e I/O modul e (the “module”). Each enclosure req uires an I/O module for op eration with a wide (16-b it) controller SCSI bu s.
3–2 Enc losure 4200 Family L V D Disk Enclosu res User Guide Figu re 3–1. Single-Bus I/O Module Module P ower Protection A sensor on the +5 VDC line in the m odule detects overcurrent conditions. Sh ould this error occur , the sen sor disconnects the voltage from the module and the po wer LED is O FF (see Figure 3 –2).
I/O Module 3–3 SCSI Bus Connectors The 68-pin VHDCI con nector en ables yo u to co nf igure the enclosure as sing le-b us, single initiator subsys tem. SCSI Bus T erm ination A SCSI bus is def ined by two b us terminators. The ex te r n a l bu s has term inat ors o n the controlle r and o n the modu le.
3–4 Enc losure 4200 Family L V D Disk Enclosu res User Guide SCSI Address Map The module assigns a SCSI address to each dri ve bay in the enclosure using a SCSI address map. The acti ve map (s ee T able 3–2) is determined by a combination of: ■ Backplane ■ EMU ■ I/O modu le Each disk dri ve bay and each cont roller has a SCSI b us ID.
Chapter 4 Disk Drives The enclosur e supports Com paq h ot -p lu gg abl e, W ide-Ultr a2 SCSI, L VD disk driv es . Th is chapter describes the disk d ri ve features, f unctions, and characteristics. The 14-disk en closure supports 1.0-inch , 3.5-in ch form facto r dri ves mounted in a carrier (see Figu re 4–2).
4–2 Enc losure 4200 Family L V D Disk Enclosu res User Guide Status Reporting The three disk dr iv e status LEDs (see Figure 4–2) def ine the op erational status of each dri ve. T o determine the dri ve status you must observ e all three LEDs (see T able 4–1).
Disk Drives 4–3 Operational Status (Continued ) Drive not be ing acce ssed Drive is being reb uilt or Arra y Capacity expans ion in progr ess Drive Oper ationa l D O NOT REPLACE DRIVE Drive not be i.
4–4 Enc losure 4200 Family L V D Disk Enclosu res User Guide Drive Power Backplane ov ercurrent sensors monitor the +5 VDC and +1 2VDC dri ve voltages. When there is a dri ve ov ercurrent con dition the sensor disconnects the v o ltage from the dri ve.
Disk Drives 4–5 Replacing a Disk Replacing a disk req uires you to ord er a replacement u sing the spare par t number ( see Chapter 6, “Replacing CR Us”). The disk replacement k it contains detailed replacemen t instructions. CAU TI ON : Removi ng more than one disk dri ve at a ti me can cause the enclosure to overhea t.
Chapter 5 Enc losure Po wer and Cooling This chapt er descr ibes the funct ion and g eneral operatio n of t he enclosu re po wer supply and fan s. See Figure 5–1 for major co mponent locations.
5–2 Enc losure 4200 Family L V D Disk Enclosu res User Guide Enc losure P ower The po wer supply and fan assembly mount in the rear of the enclosure. The supply is auto-ran ging and operates on an A C input vo ltage o f 100 to 24 0 V AC ±10%, 50 t o 60 Hz ± 5% (90 to 264 V A C, 47 to 63 Hz).
Enc losure Po wer and Cooling 5–3 The fan mounting assembly is the element for mounting the secon d fan. This elemen t has no po wer circuitry . It does contain a circuit board for processing signals to and from the fan. T emperature Sensi ng The po wer supply temperature sensor pro vides a temperatur e range signal to the EMU.
5–4 Enc losure 4200 Family L V D Disk Enclosu res User Guide Status Reporting The gree n status LED on the f an displays the s tatus of eit her the p ower supply or the f an.
Chapter 6 Replacing CR Us Each replacement CR U kit contains detailed replacement instr uctions. This chapter describes the general rep lacement procedures. Ordering a Spare CRU Ordering a rep lacement CR U requires the Compaq spare par t number . This number is located in the upp er -right corner o f the product label ( see , Figure 6–1).
6–2 Enc losure 4200 Family L V D Disk Enclosu res User Guide ESD Protection When you replace a CR U, you mus t take precautions to prev ent the possibility of electrostat ic discharge ( ES D ) dam aging sen siti ve electroni c items . 1. Always transport and store CR Us in a static-safe container .
Replacing CR Us 6–3 CAU TI ON : An assembled en closure (all elements install ed) weighs mo re than 65 lb (29.5 kg). Moving the assembled enclosure requires a minimum of two individuals. T o s afel y and easil y instal l the enclosure req uires remov ing the dr ives, po wer suppl y and fa ns, EMU , and I /O modu le.
6–4 Enc losure 4200 Family L V D Disk Enclosu res User Guide Replacing a Drive with a Drive Blank Should a disk dri ve fail you m ay wish to replace it with a dri ve blank using the pro cedure in T able 6–2. CAU TI ON : Re moving more than one disk d rive at a time can cause t he enclosure to overhea t.
Replacing CR Us 6–5 4. Insert the d rive blan k part-w ay into the en closure. 5. Firmly press in on th e drive bank t o seat it in the connector . T able 6–2 Installing a Drive B lank (Continued).
