Optio ns Option Description 100 87 − 106 Vac, 47 − 63 Hz 220 191 − 233 Vac, 47 − 63 Hz 230 207 − 253 Vac, 47 − 63 Hz 8ZL Add instrum ent feet - for bench mounting (p/n 5041-9167) AXS 1 Rack mount k it for two side-by- side N3280A units.
General Inf orm ation - 1 15 Output Characteristics Voltage Priority Operation Each Agilent N3280A output is a four- quadrant bipolar dc source that can be operated in either voltage or current priority m ode.
1 - General I nfor mation 16 If the output v oltage exceeds either the positive or neg ative overv oltage set point, the output will shut down and be disabled, automatically opening the output and sense relays. This leaves the output in a high- impedance state.
General Inf orm ation - 1 17 The heavy line illustrates the locus of possible operating points as a function of the output load, which may be purely resistive, or possibly include external voltage or current sources.
1 - General I nfor mation 18 measurem ent ranges to m ake fast measurem ents. The Hanning window can be used to reduce errors caused by other periodic noise sources, prov ided that the sample period is long enoug h to capture three or more noise w aveform cy cles.
19 2 Installation Inspection Damage When you receiv e your dc source, inspect it for any obvious dam age that m ay have occurred during shipment. I f there is damag e, notify the shipping carrier and the nearest Agilent Sales and Support Office imm ediately.
2 - Installat ion 20 Location Figure 2- 1 gives the dim ensions of your dc source. The dc source must be installed in a location that allows enough space at the sides and back of the unit for adequate air circulation (see Bench Operation). NOTE: This dc source generates m agnetic fields that may affect the operation of other instruments.

31 4 Introduction to Programming External References GPIB References The most im portant GPIB docum ents are your controller program ming m anuals - BASI C, GPIB Comm and Library for MS DOS, etc. Refer to these for all non- SCPI comm ands (for example: Local Lockout).
4 - Intr oduction to Prog ramming 32 Introduction to SCPI SCPI (Standard Comm ands for Program mable I nstruments) is a program ming lang uage for controlling instrument functions over the GPIB. SCPI is layered on top of t he hardware-portion of I EEE 488.
Introduct ion to Progr amming - 4 33 Multiple Commands in a M essage Multiple SCPI comm ands can be combined and sent as a single m essage with one m essage terminator. There are two important considerations when sending several comm ands within a single messag e: ♦ Use a semicolon to separate com mands within a m essage.
4 - Intr oduction to Prog ramming 34 Ty pes of SCPI Messages There are two types of SCPI messages, prog ram and response. ♦ A program message consists of one or more properly formatted SCPI com mands sent from the controller to the dc source. The messag e, which may be sent at any time, requests the dc source to perform som e action.
Introduct ion to Progr amming - 4 35 Headers Headers, also referred to as key words, are instructions recognized by the dc source. Headers may be either in the long form or the short form. I n the long form, the header is com pletely spelled out, such as VOLTAGE, STATUS, and DELAY.
4 - Intr oduction to Prog ramming 36 Suffixes and Multipliers Class Suffix Unit Unit with Multiplier Curren t A ampere MA (m illiampere) Am plitude V vo lt MV (millivolt) Tim e S second MS (m illiseco.
Introduct ion to Progr amming - 4 37 *OPC This sets the OPC status bit when all pending operations have com pleted. Since your program can read this status bit on an interrupt basis, *OPC allows subsequent comm ands to be executed. NOTE: The trigger subsy stem m ust be in the Idle state for the status OPC bit to be true.

39 5 Programming the DC Source Introduction This chapter contains examples on how to prog ram your dc source. Sim ple examples show you how to program : K output voltag e and current functions K inter.
5 - Prog ramming the DC Source 40 Overv oltage Protection The dc source will turn off its output and open the output relays if the output v oltage exceeds +11.5V ( ± 0.3V) or − 11.5V ( ± 0.3V) when measured at the output term inals. Overvoltag e protection is only available when operating in voltage priority mode.
Progr amming the DC Source - 5 41 Oscillation Protection Oscillation protection is a built in function that shuts down the output in about 10 m illiseconds if a persistent and severe oscillation condition is detected.
5 - Prog ramming the DC Source 42 Setting the Voltage and Current Trigger Leve ls You can program a trigger lev el (or alternate value) that the output voltag e, output current, or output current limit function w ill go to when a trigg er is received.
Progr amming the DC Source - 5 43 Generating Output Triggers After you hav e specified the appropriate trigger source, you can g enerate triggers as follows: GPIB Triggers Send one of the following co.
5 - Prog ramming the DC Source 44 Power Line Cycles After a power-on or *RST, the dc source autom atically mak es measurements based on a 0.00912 power line cycles (for 60 Hz line). T his results in a default measurem ent sample of 5 points separated by 30.
Progr amming the DC Source - 5 45 Current Ranges The dc source has three current measurem ent ranges. The comm and that controls the ranges is: SENS:CURR:RANG <value>, (@< channel list >) Enter the value of the current that y ou expect to measure.
5 - Prog ramming the DC Source 46 Measurement Trigger M odel Figure 5- 3 is a model of the m easurement trigg er system. The rectang ular boxes represent states. The arrows show the transitions between states. These are labeled with the input or event that causes the transition to occur.
Progr amming the DC Source - 5 47 To select GPIB bus trig gers, use: TRIG:ACQ:SOUR BUS To select external trigge rs use: TRIG:ACQ:SOUR EXT Selecting the Sensing Function Each output channel has its own measurem ent buffer.
5 - Prog ramming the DC Source 48 When the acquisition finishes, any of the FETCh queries can be used to return the results. Once the measurem ent trigger is initiated, if a F ETCh query is sent befor.
Progr amming the DC Source - 5 49 Programming the Status Registers Status register program ming lets you determine the operating condition of the dc source at any time. For example, y ou may prog ram the dc source to generate an interrupt (SR Q) when an event such as a current limit occurs.
5 - Prog ramming the DC Source 50 Table 5-1. Bit Configurations of Status Regis ters Bit Sign al Mean in g 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 CV CL+ CL- CC VL+ VL- OFF Operation Statu s Group The selected output is in con.
Progr amming the DC Source - 5 51 Questionable Status Group The Questionable Status registers record signals that indicate abnorm al operation. As shown below, the group consists of the sam e register types as the Status Operation group.
5 - Prog ramming the DC Source 52 Determining the Cause of a Service Interrupt You can determine the reason for an SRQ by the following actions: Step 1 Determ ine which summ ary bits are active.
