1 WELCOME 1.1 INTRODUCTION DAS501t enhances your data stora ge by combining advanced RAID 1 features typically seen on high-end data systems with low cost/ high capa city Serial ATA drives.
1.3.2 DA TA PERFORMANCE The DAS501t can al so increase storage throughput by combin ing the throughput of multiple drive s into a single volume. RAID levels 1, 10, and 5 support this ability. Furt hermo re, each volume ca n be tailored to provide the best per formance for the data contained on that disk.
1.6.2 MACINTOSH SYSTEMS • PowerMac G5, MacBook Pro or Mac Pro • MacOS X, 10.4.8 (or later) • CD-ROM d rive • Mouse or compatible pointing device • SATA connection: Host Bus Adap ter card (controlle r number Sii312 4 or Sii3132) and associated softwar e drivers with Port Multiplier support 1.
2 AN INTRODUCTION T O RAID 2.1 RAID VOLUMES RAID technology allows one or more disks to be com bined into a logical volume which provides greater performance and/or prote ction than standard disk dr ives.
2.3 RAID LEVELS 2.3.1 DISK STRIP ING (RAID 0) Striping is a performance-oriented, non-red undant data m apping technique. While Striping is discussed as a RAID Group type, it is does not provide any fault tolerance.
2.3.4 P ARITY RAID (RAID 5) Parity or RAID 5 adds fault to lerance to Disk Striping by including parity information w ith the data. Parity RAI D dedicates the equivale nt of one disk for storing parity stripes. Th e data and parity info rmation is arranged on th e disk array so th at parity is written t o different disk s.
2.4 RAID VOLUME ST A T US A RAID volume can be in any one of the follo wing statuses. STA TUS MEA NING Good All disks are currently function ing as normal. Reduced For RAID levels that provide data protection, one or more disks ha ve failed but the data is still available vi a the RAID algorithms.
