7 Getting to Know Your Printer Using the pus h and pull tractors in combinat ion To improve continuous paper feeding and redu ce paper jams, you can use two tractors at the same time. This is especi ally helpful for printing on conti nuous pre-pr inted forms, multi-p art forms, or labels, and for pr inting high quality graphics.
Getting to Know Your Printer 8 Printing on single sheets As shown below, your printer has two paper entry slots f or printing on single sheets: top and front. When continuous paper is loaded on the front or r ear push tractor, you can load single sheets in the top or front slot without removing the continuous paper.
9 Getting to Know Your Printer Loading paper in the front slot You can load ordinary si ngle sheets, single-sheet mul ti-part forms, or po stcards in the front slot. Note: Always use the front paper slot t o load single-she et multi-part forms that are bound by line glueing only at the side.

1-2 Setting Up the Printer Unpacking the Printer Besides this gui de, your pri nter box should i nclude EPSON printer software disks, a Notice Sheet, and the foll owing items: Note: Depending on your printer model, the power cord may be perm anently attached to the printer.
1 Setting U p the Prin ter 1-3 c Caution: There are several m odels of the pri nter designed for different voltages, and it is not possible to a djust the printer for use with another voltage. If the label on the back of the printer does not show the correct voltage for your country, contact your dealer.
1-4 Setting Up the Printer Choosing a Place for the Printer Follow the gui delines below when s electing a location for your printer . ❏ Place the printer on a flat, stable surface. The printer wi ll not operate pr operly if it i s tilted or at an angle.
1 Setting U p the Prin ter 1-5 ❏ Use a ground ed power outl et; do not use an ad apter p lug. ❏ Make sure the paper path is clear and unobstructed before you print on continuous paper. (Se e the next section. ) If you plan to use a print er stand, follo w these guidelines: ❏ Use a stand that supports at least 26 kg (57.
1-6 Setting Up the Printer Installing or Replacing the Ribbon Cartridge This section descri bes how to instal l or replace the ribbon cartridge. The installat ion and replace ment procedures are the same except that you nee d to remove the used ribbon cartri dge before re placing it with a ne w one.
1 Setting U p the Prin ter 1-7 3. Lift the printer cover by its back edge and then pul l it straight up and off. 4. Make sure that the print head is not hot; if i t is, let it cool fo r a few minutes before touching it. Then slide the print head to the ribbon installation position (the indente d portion of the paper tension unit) by hand.
1-8 Setting Up the Printer 5. If a us ed cartridge is install ed, grasp the car tridge and pull it slightly forward and up ; the ribb on guide snaps away from the metal pins behind the print head. Properly dis pose of the used ribbon cartridge. 6. Remove the new ribbon cartrid ge from the package.
1 Setting U p the Prin ter 1-9 7. Hold the cartridge with the ribbon-ti ghtening knob up. Fit the two front notches of the ribbon cartridge over the small pegs on each side of the printer as shown below. Then lay the cartri dge f lat. 8. Make sure that the tw o rear notches of the cartridge fit over the small pegs on ea ch side of the pri nter.
1-10 Setting Up the Printer 9. Lif t the ri bbon guide of the ri bbon cartri dge ( ① ) and insert it firmly over the metal pins behind t he print head ( ② ). Make sure the ribbon is not twisted or creased and that it is in place behind the print head.
1 Setting Up the Printer 1-11 11. Replace the printer cover by first inserting the front tabs into the slots on the printer and then lowering the cover until it clicks into plac e. Attaching the Paper G uide and Paper Separator To install the paper guide and paper separator, fol low these steps: 1.
1-12 Setting Up the Printer 2. Make sure the paper guide cover is ope n as shown belo w. Attach the pa per guide by sliding the slots on the bottom of the paper guide over the pegs b ehind the paper tensi on unit.
1 Setting Up the Printer 1-13 Plugging In the Printer 1. Make sure the printer is turned off. The p rinter is off when the surface of the Operate button is even with the button protectors as shown below. 2. Check the label on the back of the printer to make sure its voltage matches that of your electri cal outlet.
1-14 Setting Up the Printer Connecting the Printer to Your Computer To connect your computer to your printer’s buil t-in parallel interface, you need a shi elded, twisted-pair parall el cable with a D-SUB, 25-pin, male connector for your computer and a 36-p in Centro nics ® compatible connector for the printer.
1 Setting Up the Printer 1-15 3. If your cable has a ground wire, connect it to the printer’s ground connector as shown below. 4. Plug the other end of the cable into the computer. (If the cable has a ground wire at the computer end, attach it to the ground connector at the back of the computer.
1-16 Setting Up the Printer If you are u sing the floppy di sk version of the software , make a backup copy of the EPSON printer sof tware disk before you begin installation. If you wish to make a floppy disk version of the printer software on your CD-ROM, you can use the Driver disk creation utili ty included on the CD.

2-2 Printing on Continuous Paper Setting the Paper R elease Lever You can lo ad paper in t he printer f rom various pape r source s, such as the front push tractor or the paper guide. You set the paper release lever to indicate the pape r source you want to use.
2 Printing on Continuous Paper 2-3 Note: You can load two differen t types of continuous paper onto the front and rear push tractors, and easily switch between them using the pape r release lever . Before moving the paper releas e lever, always press the Load/ Eject button to feed the paper in the paper path backward to the standby position.
2-4 Printing on Continuous Paper Use the following table to set the paper thickness lever to match the thickness of your paper. Note: ❏ If th e pr inted ima ge is smea red, you may nee d to set the p aper thickness lever one position highe r to improve print quality.
2 Printing on Continuous Paper 2-5 Loading Multi-Part Forms You can use carb onless multi-par t forms of up to si x parts (five copies in additi on to the or iginal). Make sure you set the pap er thickness lever to the proper position based on the number of layers in your form.
2-6 Printing on Continuous Paper Thick paper, such as continuous paper with labe ls, requi res a straight or almost straight paper path. You can load labels in the front (push tractor or p ull tractor.
2 Printing on Continuous Paper 2-7 Removing continuous paper with labels To avoid p eeling labels o ff the backing she et and jamming the printer, follow the steps be low when you remove continuous paper with labels from the printer.
2-8 Printing on Continuous Paper Using the Front Push Tractor To use the front pu sh tractor, load continuous paper in the fro nt slot. For more in formation on when to use the front push tractor, see “Available Paper Paths” on page 3. Note: The tractors ar e installed in the front push and rear push positions whe n the printer is shipped.
2 Printing on Continuous Paper 2-9 3. Insert the tractor into the printer’s mou nting slots and press down both ends of the tractor to make sure that it is firmly seated. You are now re ady to load continuous paper onto the front push tractor as described in the next sectio n.
2-10 Printing on Continuous Paper 2. Set the paper release lever to the front push tractor position. Also set the paper thickness le ver (located under the printer cover) to the proper pos ition for your paper’s thickness. 3. Release the left and right sprockets by pushing the sprocket lock levers backward.

Then pull the lever forward to lock it in pl ace. Note: See “Paper alignment” and “Printable a rea” in Appendix C for more informatio n on the left margin posi tion.
2-12 Printing on Continuous Paper 7. Slide the right sprocket to remove an y slack in the paper; then lock it in place by push ing th e spro cket lock d own. 8. Attach the front paper guide by sliding it along the printer’s mounting slots as shown below.
2 Printing on Conti nuous Paper 2-13 10. Make sure the pr inter is on. You may need to check and change the printer dri ver settings as described i n Chapter 4. When the printer receives data, it automatica lly loads the paper and starts printing. The printed pages are fed over the paper guide toward the back of the printer.
2-14 Printing on Continuous Paper 2. Open the paper guide cover, and tear off t he printed document using the tear-o ff edge of the printer. Note: If your paper’s p erforation is not properly aligned with the tear-off edge, you can adjust the tear-off position using the micro adjust feature.

Remove any pape r from the tract or as described in the pre vious sect ion. 2. Turn off the printer. 3. Open the front paper guide by pulling the tab at the center of the guide.
2-16 Printing on Continuous Paper Using the Rear P ush Tractor To use the re ar push tractor , load continuous pap er in the rear slot. For information on when to use the rear push tractor, see “Available Paper Paths” on page 3.

Also set the paper thickness l ever (located under the printer cover) to the proper position for your paper’s thickness. 3. Release the left and right sprockets by pulling the sprocket lock lever s forward.
2-18 Printing on Continuous Paper 4. Slide the left sprocket to the left margin of the paper using the scale on the printer. (Printing starts at the “0” mark.) Then push the lever back to lock it in place. Note: See “Paper alignmen t” and “Printa ble area” in Appendix C f or more information on the left marg in position.

2-20 Printing on Continuous Paper Removing the printed document from the rear push tractor To remove the printed do cument, fol low these steps: 1. Make sure th e Tear O ff/Bin lights are flashing. (This indicates your paper is at the current tear-off p osition).
2 Printing on Conti nuous Paper 2-21 To remove the remaining paper from the printer, press the Load/ Eject button to feed the paper backward to the standby position. (See the Glossary for an explanation of the standby position.) Then open the sprocket covers of the tractor and remove paper.
2-22 Printing on Continuous Paper Installing the tractor in the pull position To install a tractor in the pull position you must either remove the front push tractor or install the optional pull tractor (C80032 ✽ ). To remove the front pus h tractor, see “Removing the fro nt push tractor” on page 2-15.

2-24 Printing on Continuous Paper To load paper onto the pul l tractor, fo llow these steps: 1. Make sure the prin ter is turned of f, and the printer cover is removed. Also check that a tractor i s installed in the pul l position. 2. Slide the edge guides to the middle of the paper guide.

Then pull up the paper unti l the perforation between the first and second pages is even wit h the top of the printer’s ribbon.

2 Printing on Conti nuous Paper 2-31 c Caution ❏ Never use the knob to remove slack in the paper or to adjust the top-of-form position; this may damage the printer or cause it to lose the top- of-form position. ❏ Always remove any sla ck from the paper; otherwise print qual ity ma y be re duced.
2-32 Printing on Continuous Paper Removing the pull tractor To remove the tractor from the pull position, follow these steps: 1. Remove any paper loaded on the pull tractor as descr ibed on page 2- 29. 2. Turn off the pri nter. Then remove the printer cover and lift the paper gui de up and off the printer.
2 Printing on Conti nuous Paper 2-33 5. To replace the pape r tension unit, l ower it onto the printer’s mounting pegs. Then press down both ends of the unit unt il it clicks into place. 6. Replace the paper guide and printer cover . Then close the paper gu ide cove r.
2-34 Printing on Continuous Paper Switching Between Prin ting on Continuous Paper and Printing on Single Sheets You can eas ily switch back and forth between pr inting on continuous pa per with a push tractor and pr inting on single sheets without having to remove or reload paper.

The paper is still attached to the push tractor but is no longer in the paper path. 3. Load single sheets i n the top or fr ont paper guide as described in Chapter 3.
2-36 Printing on Continuous Paper Adjusting the Top-of-Form Position The top-of-form posi tion is the posi tion on the page whe re the printer will star t printing. If your printing appears too hi gh or low on the page, you can use the micro adj ust feature to adjust the top- of-form posi tion as described below.

Press the LF /FF D button to move the top-of-form position up on the page, or press the Load/Eject U button to move the top-of-form positio n down on the page. c Caution : Never use the knob to adjust the top-of-form position; t his may damage the printer or cause it to lose the top-of-form position.
2-38 Printing on Continuous Paper To adjust the top- of-form position for continuous paper loaded on the pul l tractor, se e the following exampl e: First mark a point 6.5 mm (0.26 inch) above the paper’s perforatio n; then position the paper so that the mark i s even with the top edge of the plastic ribb on cover.
2 Printing on Conti nuous Paper 2-39 Advancing the Paper to the Tear-Off Edge If you use the f ront or re ar push tractor, you can use the tear-off feature to advance your continuous paper to the printer’s tear-of f edge when you finish printing. You can then easily tear of f the printed document.
2-40 Printing on Continuous Paper Advancing paper to the tear-off position automatically To automatically advance your printed d ocuments to the te ar-off position, you ne ed to turn on the aut o tear-off mode and select the appropriate page length for continuous paper in the d efault- setting mode.

3-2 Pr inting on Sing le Sheets Using Single Sheets Availa ble p aper types and pap er slot s As shown below, you can load single-sheet p aper one sheet at a time using the paper guide on t op of the printer or the front paper guide . You can print on ordinary single sheets, single-shee t multi-part fo rms, postcards, and e nvelopes.

3 Printing on Single Sheets 3-5 Insert this type of f orm in the front slot with the bound edge first and the printab le side up, as shown below. ❏ You can l oad multi-p art forms bound at the side only in the front slot. Insert this type of form in the front slot with the top edge fir st and the printable side up, as sho wn below.
3-6 Pr inting on Sing le Sheets Loading envelop es You can load envelopes only in the top paper slot as described in “Loading Single Sheets in the Top Pa per Slot” on page 3-8. Also, follow these guide lines: ❏ Load envelopes one at a time in the top slot, with the flap edge first and the flap side up.
3 Printing on Single Sheets 3-7 c Caution: Because printing on the edge of an envelope may damage the print head, make sure t he printing stays entirely within the printable area of your envelopes. See Appendix C for details on the printable area of envelo pes.
3-8 Pr inting on Sing le Sheets Loading Single Sheets in the Top Paper Slot To load paper in the top slot, follow these ste ps: 1. Make sure the paper gui de is installed properly. If not, attach it as described on page 1-11. 2. Open the paper guide cover.

When the printer receives data, it prints the page and eje cts it back onto the paper guide. To continue printing your docume nt, remove the print ed page and insert a new sheet of paper.
