System Boar d Conn ect ors 13 IDE Connector (CC) This is an int egrated Ultra-DMA PCI/I DE interface with an IDE connect or capab le of controll ing up to tw o IDE devi ces. Ultra-DMA pro vid es f aster access to IDE de vices that are Ultra-DMA complian t while maintaining support for IDE de vices that do not support the Ultra-DMA spe cif ication.

System Boar d Conn ect ors 21 Pr ocessor Slots (V , X, Y , AB) Each P entium ® II Xeon ™ processor is packaged in a SEC cartridge. The cartridge inc ludes the processor core with an inte g rated 16 KB primary (L1) cach e; the secondary (L2) cache; a thermal plate; a nd a back co ver .

Me m o r y 23 Memory The system comes standar d with 256-MB of ECC RAM. System RAM is expandab le up to 4-GB using ECC 50- or 60-ns 72-bit EDO DIMMs (16 DIMM socket s) with gold contacts. Main memor y resides on an e xpansion card , called a memory module, designed specif icall y for this serve r .

Me m o r y 25 Memory Configurat ion BIOS automatica lly dete cts, sizes, and initia lizes the memory ar ra y , depending on the t ype, size, and speed of the ins talled DIMMs, and reports memor y size an d allocation to the sys tem via conf iguration re gisters.

Pull the tw o tabs attached to the si ngle edge contact (SEC) cartridge (visib le after you remo v e the bracket —C in Figure 6) straight a w a y from the system boar d. As you do, the cartrid ge disengages from the connector on the system board.
Replacing the Processor 35 12. W ith the tabs at t he top of the SEC cartrid ge completel y open (pulled outw ard , a wa y from the center of the cartrid ge—C in Figure 7), slide the cartridge into the guide rai ls of the retentio n module (B in F igure 7).

Remo ve the memor y module and place it component-side up on a nonconducti ve , static-free surface ( see “R emo ving the Memor y Module” on page 40).
Installing Hardware 43 Installing DIMMs When adding and remo vi ng DIMM s, remember that DIMMs must be installed o r remo ved b y banks. Each bank consists of four DIMM sockets. All DIMMs in t he bank must be instal led and all must be of the s ame size and spee d.

Installing Hardware 45 Driv es The case must be opened t o add or replace dri ves ( such as disk dri ves and CD-R OM dri ves) in t he system. Refer to “Opening the System” on pa ge 3 , for instructions on openi ng and closing the case.

Installing Hardware 51 5. Open the subch assis (see “Opening the Subchassis and Electronics Ba y” on page 5) to gain access to the back of the 5.25-inch d riv e ba y . 6. Remo ve the driv e from its protecti ve wra pper , and place it on an antistati c surface.

SCSI Har d Disk Drives The system supports a v ariety of SCSI de vices. As shipped from t he supplie r , the system might contai n no hard disk dri ves.

Each LED cor responds directl y to a dri ve, so that t he upper-most LED refl ects an er ror condition in the upper- most dri ve.

After r emo ving the card from its pr otectiv e wrapper or from the system board , place it component-sid e up on a gr ounded , static-free sur f ace or conducti v e foam pad.
