SmartCommand Thermostat Installati on Manu al 20 Installation over view Before you remov e an existing t hermostat and instal l the SmartCommand thermost at, follow these guidelines: • Record existing wiring information. • Do the bench test. • Check WDU wiring before applying power to the control unit.
21 Freeze protection In cold climates that require the heating system to be used for building freeze prot ection, a mechanical backup freeze protection device must be inst alled on the heating syst em. This can be a simp le mechanical heating thermostat or a preset thermoswitc h installed in the heated area ( Figure 15 ).
SmartCommand Thermostat Installati on Manu al 22 Wall display unit installation Choose a location for the wall display unit (WDU) that be st represents the temperature of the area to be controlled. A void locations that are subject to dr afts or areas with direct sunlight exposure.
23 Control unit installation Install the control unit in a protecte d, conven ient, ind oor location near the HV AC system or in a service accessible area such as an equipment cl oset or garage. Mount the control unit in a vertical position on a wall or sturdy structural member .
SmartCommand Thermostat Installati on Manu al 24 HV AC system wiring W i ring will differ depending on if your system is a standard gas or electric system or if your system is a heat pump system. Standard HVAC system wiring Figur e 18 shows the wiring diagram for a standard gas or electric HV AC system.
25 For standard HV AC system s, follow these guidelines: Single-stage systems. Use W1 for heating stage 1, and Y1 for cooling stage 1. T wo-stage heating systems. Use W1 for stage 1, and W2 for stage 2 heating. T wo-stage cooling systems. Use Y1 for stage 1 and Y2 for stage 2 cooling.
