G1495 Heavy-Duty W ood Lathe -5- Additional Saf ety Instructions For The Lathe Like all power tools, there is danger asso- ciated with the Model G1495 Heavy-Duty Lathe. Accidents are frequently caused by lack of familiarity or failure to pa y attention.
-6- G1495 Heavy-Duty W ood Lathe SECTION 2: CIRCUIT REQUIREMENTS 110/220V Operation Y our G1495 machine comes pre-wired for 110V operation. It includes a three-prong plug which should be plugged into a grounded circuit as shown in Figure 1 . Under nor mal use , the motor dra ws appro ximately 12 amps @ 110V .
G1495 Heavy-Duty W ood Lathe -7- W e do not recommend the use of e xtension cords on 220V equipment. It is much better to arrange the placement of your equipment and the installed wiring to eliminate the need for e xten- sion cords.

G1495 Heavy-Duty W ood Lathe -9- Unpac king This machine is shipped from the manuf acturer in two carefully pac k ed car tons. If you discov er the machine is damaged after you’v e signed f or deliv- er y , and the tr uck and driver are gone , y ou will need to file a freight claim with the carrier .
-10- G1495 Heavy-Duty W ood Lathe Clean Up The unpainted surf aces are coated with a waxy oil to protect it from corrosion during shipment. Remov e this protective coating with a solv ent cleaner or citrus-based degreaser . A void chlo- rine-based solvents as the y ma y damage painted surf aces should the y come in contact.

G1495 Heavy-Duty W ood Lathe -15- Figure 13. Sanding disc and table. The outboard side of the headstock spindle accommodates a number of accessories. There are two diff erent sanding attachments: 1) an 8'' sanding disc and table with miter gauge , and 2) a pneumatic drum and flap sander .

Pneumatic Drum and Flap Sander The drum and the flap wheel attachment mount onto the mandrel provided. See Figure 14 for proper installation. 1. First slide the flap wheel ov er the end of the mandrel and position it against the machined land.

-20- G1495 Heavy-Duty W ood Lathe SECTION 6: OPERA TIONS T est Run Once the assembly is complete and all f asteners and accessories hav e been tightened securely , you are ready to test the machine . Do not attempt to mount any w orkpiece on the spindle for this ini- tial test run.

-22- G1495 Heavy-Duty W ood Lathe Selecting the appropriate tur ning speed depends upon a number of f actors. Most impor tant is the diameter of the workpiece - the larger the diame- ter , the slo wer the speed. The type of wood is also impor tant, harder woods require slower speeds .

-24- G1495 Heavy-Duty -24- F aceplate tur ning is usually done on stoc k diam- eters greater than 4'' and less than 8'' in length. The maximum recommended stoc k diameter f or inboard tur ning is 14'' if less than 2'' thick.
G1495 Heavy-Duty W ood Lathe -25- Inde xing can be used f or cutting e venly spaced groo v es or flutes along the length of a spindle. The headstock spindle inde xes e very 30˚ by inser ting the knock out bar into the hole in the headstock.
-26- G1495 Heavy-Duty W ood Lathe SECTION 7: MAINTENANCE Lubrication V -Belt Since all bearings are shielded and per manently lubricated, lubr ication is not required f or the lif e of the bearings. The threads on the locking handles and le vers ma y require a small amount of lubrication ov er time.
