5 T hank you for selecting the revolutionary HealthRider ® H 500 treadmill. The H500 treadmill offers an impres- sive array of features to help you achieve your fitness goals in the convenience and privacy of y our h ome.
6 1. Make sure that the power cord is unplugged. With the help of a second person, carefully raise the Uprights (97) to the position shown. Insert one of the Extension Legs (115) into the base of the right Upright. (Note: It may be helpful to tip the Uprights forward as you insert the Extension Leg.
4. Remove the knob from the pin. Make sure that the collar and the spring are on the pin. (Note: If there are two col- lars, place one on each side of the spring.) Insert the pin into the Latch Insert (114) in the left Upright (97), and tighten the knob back onto the pin.
8 7. Make sure that all parts are properly tightened before you use the treadmill. Note: Extra hardware may be included. Keep the included hex keys in a secure place; the large hex key is used to adjust the walking belt (see page 27). To protect the floor or carpet, place a mat under the treadmill.
H OW TO PUT ON THE CHEST PULSE SENSOR T he chest pulse sensor consists of two components: the chest strap and the sensor unit (see the drawing below ). Insert the tab on one end of the chest strap into the hole in one end of the sensor unit, as shown in the inset drawing.
10 OPERA TION AND ADJUSTMENT THE PRE-LUBRICATED WALKING BELT Your treadmill features a walking belt coated with high-performance lubricant. IMPORTANT: Never apply sili- cone spray or other substances to the walking belt or the walking platform. Such substances will deterio- r ate the walking belt and cause excessive wear.
1 1 FEATURES OF THE CONSOLE The treadmill console offers an impressive array of features designed to make your workouts more effec- tive. When the manual mode of the console is selected, the speed and incline of the treadmill can be changed with the touch of a button.
12 HOW TO TURN ON THE POWER N ote: To prevent damage to the walking platform, wear clean shoes whilst using the treadmill. Plug in the power cord (see page 10). Next, locate the on/of f switch on the treadmill frame near the power cord. Make sure that the switch is in the “on” position.
13 The left side of the dis- play will show the incline l evel of the treadmill, the elapsed time, and the d istance that you have walked or run. Note: When a program is selected (except for the fitness test program and pulse control program 2), the display will show the time remaining in the pro- gram instead of the elapsed time.
14 H OW TO USE A SPEED & INCLINE PROGRAM I nsert the key into the console. S ee HOW TO TURN ON THE POWER on page 12. S elect one of the speed & incline programs. To select one of the speed & in- cline pro- grams, pr ess the Speed & Incline Program button re- peatedly.
15 Follow your progress with the display. See step 5 on page 12. Measure your heart rate if desired. S ee step 6 on page 13. Turn on the fan if desired. See step 7 on page 13. When you are finished exercising, remove the key from the console. When the program ends, make sure that the in- cline of the treadmill is at the lowest setting.
16 H OW TO USE A PULSE CONTROL PROGRAM Pulse control program 2 will automatically adjust the speed and incline of the treadmill to keep your heart rate near a target heart rate setting that you select. Pulse control program 3 will keep your heart rate within a pre- set range.
17 When only three seconds remain in the first seg- ment, both the Current Segment column and the c olumn to the right will flash and a series of tones will sound. When the first segment ends, all target h eart rate settings will move one column to the left.
18 H OW TO USE THE FITNESS TEST PROGRAM The fitness test program measures your approximate VO 2 max, or aerobic capacity. VO 2 max is a measure of your ability to intake and utilize oxygen to generate energy for endurance activities such as running and cycling.
19 HOW TO CONNECT THE TREADMILL TO USE IFIT.COM PROGRAMS To use iFIT.com MP3 or CD programs , the treadmill m ust be connected to your MP3 player, CD player, p ortable stereo, home stereo, or computer. See pages 19 and 20 for connecting instructions. To use iFIT.
20 HOW TO CONNECT YOUR HOME STEREO N ote: If your stereo has an unused LINE OUT jack, see instruction A below. If the LINE OUT jack is b eing used, see instruction B. A. Plug one end of a long 3.5 mm to RCA stereo audio cable (available at electronics stores) into the input jack on the console.
21 HOW TO CONNECT YOUR VCR N ote: If your VCR has an unused AUDIO OUT jack, see instruction A below. If the AUDIO OUT jack is b eing used, see instruction B. If you have a TV with a built-in VCR, see instruction B. If your VCR is connected to your home stereo, see HOW TO CONNECT YOUR HOME STEREO on page 20.
22 If the speed or incline settings are too high or too low, you can manually override the settings at any t ime by pressing the Speed or Incline buttons on the console. However, when the next “chirp” is h eard, the speed and/or incline will change to the next settings of the program.

24 HOW T O FOLD AND MOVE THE TREADMILL HOW TO FOLD THE TREADMILL FOR STORAGE Before folding the treadmill, adjust the incline to the lowest position. If this is not done, the treadmill may be per- manently damaged. Next, unplug the power cord. CAUTION: You must be able to safely lift 20 kg (45 lbs.
25 HOW TO MOVE THE TREADMILL Before moving the treadmill, convert the treadmill to the storage position as described on page 24. Make sure that the frame is held securely by the latch pin. 1. Hold the handrails, and place one foot against one of the wheels.
TROUBLESHOOTING Most treadmill problems can be solved by following the steps below. Find the symptom that applies, and follow the steps listed. If further assistance is needed, please call the telephone number on the front c over of this manual. PROBLEM: The power does not turn on SOLUTION: a.
27 With the help of a second person, carefully raise the U pright s (97) as show n. Carefully pivot the Hood (93) off. Locate the Reed Switch (22) and the Magnet (19) on the left side of the Pulley (18). Turn the Pulley until the Magnet is aligned with the Reed Switch.
28 PROBLEM: The heart rate monitor does not function properly S OLUTION: a . If the heart rate monitor does not function properly, see CHEST PULSE SENSOR TROUBLE- SHOOTING on page 9. b. If the heart rate monitor still does not function properly, the battery should be changed.
