To connect the HP Ph otosmart to a Windows comput er with an ad h oc connection, t he computer must h ave a wireless network adap ter and an ad hoc pro file. Crea te a netwo rk profile for a Win dows Vista or Window s XP computer using th e directions b elow.

5 Paper basics You can load many dif ferent types and si zes of paper in t he HP Photosmart , including letter or A4 paper, phot o paper, transparencies, and envelopes.
Recommended papers for printing If you want t he best print qu ality, HP recomme nds using HP papers t hat are specif ically designed for t he type of project you are printing. Depending on your country/ region, some of these papers might not b e availab le.
ColorLok HP recommends plain papers with the ColorLok log o for printing and copying of ever yday documents. Solution 2: Reset the pro duct Solution: Turn of f the product, and then unplug t he power cord. Plug the p ower cord back in, and th en press the On butto n to turn on the product . Cause: The product experienced an error. If this did no t solve the i ssue, try the next so lution.

The registra tion screen does not app ear Solution: You can access the registrat ion (Sign up no w) screen from the Windows taskbar by clicking Start , pointing to Programs or All Programs , HP , Photosmart C4700 seri es , and then clicking Product Regis tration .
When the soft ware inst allation is comp lete, the HP Digital Imag ing Monitor icon appears in the Windows system tray. To verify that t he softw are is properly insta lled, double-cl ick the HP Solution Cente r icon on the desktop.

Cause: When p rintouts are st acked on top of a p hoto before the ink is com pletely dry, some color disto rtion may occur in th e photo. Memory card troubleshooting Use this section to solve these me.
If the file system on the card is corr upt, reformat the memory card in your digital camera. For m ore information, se e the documenta tion that came with your digit al camera. CAUTION: Reformatting the memory card will d elete any photos store d on the card.

Solution 2: Wipe the glass and the back of the document lid Solution: Turn off the pro duct, unplug the power cord, and the n use a soft cl oth to wipe the glass and the back of th e document lid . Cause: Debris might have been stuck on the gl ass or on the ba ck of the do cument lid.

File messages The followi ng is a list of file-related e rror messages: • Error reading or writi ng the fil e • Unreadable fi les. NN files cou ld not be read • Photos not found • File n ot fo.
File not found Solution: Close some ap plications and try the task a gain. Cause: There was not enoug h available memory on your com puter to creat e a print preview f ile. Invalid fil e name Solution: Make sure that you are no t using any invalid symbol s in the file name.
General u ser messages The followi ng is a list of messag es related to comm on user errors: • Cannot crop • Borderless printi ng error • Memo ry ca rd e rror • Memory card is locked • Out o.
Memory card erro r Try the foll owing so lutions. • Solution 1: Re move all but one mem ory card • Solution 2: Push the m emory card al l the way forward Solution 1: Remove all bu t one memor y card Solution: Remove al l but on e memory card. The prod uct reads the re maining memory card and displays the f irst photo stored o n the memory card.
If more than one memory ca rd is inserted, an error message will app ear on the display. Remove the addi tional memo ry card to resolve t he problem. Cause: Multi ple mem ory cards were inserted in the prod uct.
Paper up side do wn Solution: Load paper in the paper tra y print si de down. Cause: Paper in the pa per tray was up side down. Paper o rientat ion erro r Solution: Insert paper int o the paper tray wi th the short edge fo rward and the print side down.
Cause: The indicated print cartridges were est imated to be l ow on ink and might need to be replaced soo n. Need alignment or al ignment failed Try the followi ng solutions to resolve the issue. So lutions are l isted in orde r, with the m ost likely solution f irst.
Solution 3: Make su re the protective tape is removed from the pr int cartridges Solution: Check each print cartridge. The tape might have been removed fro m the copper-colo red contacts, but stil l might cover the i nk nozzles. If the tap e is still covering the ink nozzles, care fully remove the tape from the print cartridg es.
Solution 5: Print cartri dge might be defective Solution: If t he alignment erro r persists and you cannot clear it, yo ur print cartrid ge might be defe ctive. Check to se e if your print cartridge is still under warranty and e nd of warranty date ha s not been reac hed.
4. Remove the black print cart ridge from the slo t on the right. Do not touch the i nk nozzles or the copper-colo red contacts. Ch eck for possible da mage to the copper - colored contacts or ink nozzles. Make sure the clea r plastic tape has b een remove d.
HP recommen ds that you use genuine H P print cartridg es. Genuine H P print cartridges are designed and tested with HP pr i nters to help yo u easily produce gre at results, time aft er time. NOTE: HP cannot gu arantee the quality or reliabilit y of non-HP supplies.
3. Lightly press down on the print cartri dge to release it , and then pull it to wards you out of the s lot. NOTE: Do not remove bot h print cartri dges at the same t ime. Remove an d clean ea ch print cartridg e one at a time. Do not le ave a print car tridge outsi de the HP Photosmart for more than 30 minutes.
9. Repeat if ne cessary for the oth er print cart ridge. 10. Gently clos e the print cartridge doo r and plug t he power co rd into the back of the product. Cause: The print cartridge was missing. If this did no t solve the i ssue, try the next so lution.
Solution 3: Remov e and reinser t the print car tridges Solution: One or both of the print cartridg es are not inst alled or are installed incorrectly. Remove a nd reinsert the print cartridges and verif y that they are f ully inserted and locked in place.
8. Hold the p rint cartridge with the HP logo on top, a nd insert t he print cartridge ba ck into the slot. Ma ke sure you push th e print ca rtridge i n firmly until i t snaps into place. 9. Repeat if ne cessary for the oth er print cart ridge. 10. Gently clos e the print cartridge doo r and plug t he power co rd into the back of the product.

Repeat steps 1 an d 2 for the tri-colo r print cartridge on the left side. Cause: The i ndicated pri nt cartridge w ere in stalled incorrectly .
2. Wait until the print carriag e is idle and silent, an d then unpl ug the pow er cord from the back of the prod uct. 3. Lightly press down on the print cartridge to release it, an d then pull it towards you out of the slo t. NOTE: Do not remove both print cartridg es at the same time.
9. Repeat if necessary for the other pri nt cartridg e. 10. Gently close the print cartridge doo r and plug th e power cord into th e back of the produc t. Cause: The pri nt cartridge contacts nee ded to be clean ed. If this di d not s olve the issue, try the next so lution.
If it appea rs that you are using t he correct print cartridges, proce ed to the ne xt solution. For more information, see: “ Replace t he cartrid ges” on page 48 Cause: The indicated print cartridges were no t compat ible with the produ ct. If this did no t solve the i ssue, try the next so lution.

5. Close the pri nt cartridge door. 6. Check to see if the e rror has been resolved. • If the erro r has been resolved, then there is a pro blem with the bl ack print cartridge. • If the er ror has not been resol ved, contin ue to the next ste p. 7.
