2 HP Photosmart overview Use the HP Photosm art to print photos from a me mory card or print dire ctly on the surface of specially coat ed CDs and DVDs. You can access many HP Photo smart functions directly from the control panel, without tu rning on your computer.

6 Load paper You can load many dif ferent types and size s of paper in the HP Phot osmart, including letter or A4 pape r, photo paper, transpa rencies, and envel opes. In addit ion, the HP Photosmart lets you load an d print directly on the surface of specia lly coated CD s and DVDs.

Load full-siz e paper You can load many types of le tter or A4 paper into the mai n input tray of the HP Photosmart. To loa d full-size pape r 1. Raise the out put tray to load paper into the mai n input tray. 2. Slide the paper-w idth guide to it s outermost position .
3. Insert the stack of p aper into the main input tray w ith the short e dge forward and th e print side down. Slide the stack of pape r forward until it stops. CAUTION: Make sure that the product i s idle and silent when you load pa per into the main input tray.

Load envelo pes You can load one or more envelop es into the main inpu t tray of the HP Photosma rt. Do not use shiny or emb ossed envelopes or envelopes that have clasps or windo ws. NOTE: For specific details on h ow to format text for printi ng on envelopes, con sult the help files in your word p rocessing software.
4. Insert one or more envelope s into the far-right side of th e main input tray, with the envelope flaps on th e left and facing u p. Slide the stack of envelo pes forward un til it stops. 5. Slide the pa per-width guide inw ard against th e stack of enve lopes until i t stops.

To load a regula r-size (120 mm) CD/DVD on the CD/DVD tray 1. Carefull y remove the C D/DVD holder t hat came with t he product. The CD/D VD holder is stored belo w the main input tray. 2. Securely snap t he inkjet print able media onto the CD/DVD h older with t he printable side up.
4. Push the CD/DV D holder into the pro duct until the lin es on the CD/D VD holder line up to the white li nes on the CD/D VD tray. NOTE: The produ ct pulls the CD/DVD ho lder while pri nting on the media. Th e CD/DVD holder mi ght protrude about 7. 5 cm (3 inches) at the back o f the product.

• Adjust the pap er-width guide in the input tray to fit snugly ag ainst all paper. Make sure the paper-w idth guide does no t bend the paper in the input tr ay. • Do not force paper too fa r forward in the input tray. • Use paper types tha t are recommended for the product.
7 Print from your computer The HP Phot osmart can be used with any software ap plication tha t allows pri nting. You can print a range of p rojects, such as borderless images, newsletters, gree ting cards, iron-on transfers, and post ers.
Make the HP Photosmart the default printer You can set the H P Photosmart as th e default pri nter to use f rom all sof tware applicatio ns. This means that the HP Photosmart is automatically se lected in the printer list when you select Print from the File menu in a softw are application.

Printing in maxim um dpi takes longer t han printing wit h other settings and requ ires a large amount of disk space. To print in Maximum dpi mode 1. Make sure you have paper loaded in th e input tray. 2. On the F ile menu in your softw are application , click Print .
To print di rectly onto a CD/DVD 1. Use the software tha t came with the product to create and print a CD/DVD label. 2. When prompted , load a CD/DVD i nto the CD/D VD holder on the prod uct. 3. Push the CD /DVD holder int o the product unt il the lines on th e CD/DVD hol der line up to the white lines on t he CD/DVD tray.
7. For binding, do one of the following: • For binding on the top like a notebook or ca lendar, select the Flip Pages Up check box. This causes t he odd and even pages of your document to pri nt opposite of each other top-to-botto m.
To prin t a multiple -page docume nt as a book let 1. Load paper in to the input tra y. The paper sh ould be thick enoug h so that the im ages do not show through to the other side. 2. On the File menu in you r software applicat ion, click Print . 3. Make sure the product i s the selected printer.
Figure 7-2 Right-edge binding for right-to-left languages Print multiple pag es on a single sheet You can print up t o 16 pages on a single sh eet of paper. To print multiple pages on a single sheet 1. Make sure you have paper loaded in th e input tray.
Print a multiple-page doc ument in re verse order Because of the way the paper f eeds through th e HP Photosma rt, the f irst page that prints is print side up at t he bottom of the stack. Usually this means yo u need to put the printed pages in the correct order.
Reverse an image for iron-on transfers This feature re verses an image so you can use it for iron-on transfers. This feature is also useful for t ransparencies w hen you want to m ake notations on th e back of the transparency without scratching the original .
6. In the Basic Options area, from the Paper Type drop-down lis t, select More . Then select the appropriate paper t ype. TIP: If you want t o make notations on the back of the tr ansparencies and erase them late r without scratching the ori ginal, click th e Ad vanced tab , and select the Mirro r Image check box.
Print a poster You can create a poster by pri nting a document on multi ple pages. The H P Photosmart prints dotte d lines on some pages to indic ate where to trim the pages before taping them together. To print a poster 1. Make sure you have paper loaded in th e input tray.
To print a We b page 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loaded in the main in put tray. 2. On the File menu in your Web browser, click Print . The Print d ialog box appears. 3. Make sure the product i s the selected printer. 4. If your Web browse r supports it, select t he items on the W eb page that you wa nt to include in t he printout.
8 Use the photo features The HP Photosmart is equipped w ith memory card slots and a f ront USB port that enable you to print or edit ph otos from a memory card or storag e device (such as a keychain drive, portable ha rd drive, or a digital camera in storage mode) without uploading your photos to a co mputer first.

TIP: To achieve th e best print q uality, HP recomm ends using HP papers that are specifical ly designed for th e type of project you a re printing along with g enuine HP ink. HP papers an d HP ink are speci fically designed to work w ell together t o provide high-qua lity output.
5. Press Print Photos . 6. Press the left arrow or ri ght arrow to scroll through the layout opt ions, and pres s OK when the opti on you want is highlighted: 4 x 6 5 x 7 TIP: While the photo is pri nting, you can conti nue scrolling through the photos on your memory card .

9 Maintain the HP Photosmart The HP Photosmart requires little mainten ance. You might need to replace ink cartridges, clean the prin t head, or alig n the printer from tim e to time. Thi s section provides instructions for keep ing the HP Photosm art in top working condition .
• Store ink cartridges at ro om temperature (15.6- 26.6° C or 60-78° F). • If you notice a significant decrease in print quality, check the estim ated ink levels remaining in the ink cartridges. Replace an y ink cartridges that are lo w on ink. If none of the ink cartridg es are low, clean the p rint head.
To check the ink le vels from the HP Photosmart Software 1. In the HP Solution Center, click Settings , point to Print Settings , an d then click Printer Tool box .
The print carriage moves to the cent er of the product. NOTE: Wait until th e print carriage st ops moving before proceed ing. 3. Press the tab on the ink cartrid ge to release it, an d then remove it from th e slot. If you are replaci ng the black ink cartridge , push the tab of the ink cartridg e on the far right.
5. Twist the orange cap to snap it off . 6. Using the col ored shaped icons f or help, slide t he ink cartridge into the empty slo t until it clicks i nto place and is seated firml y in the slot. CAUTION: Do not lift the latch h andle on the pri nt carriage to in stall the ink cartridges.
Clean the print head If your printed output is streaked, or is mi ssing, or has any incorre ct or missing colors, the print head may need to be cleaned. This process uses ink to attempt to un clog and clean th e nozzles in the print head. This might take a fe w minutes and will use one or more she ets of paper.
4. Click the Device Services t ab. 5. Click Align the Printer . The product prin ts a test page, aligns th e print head, and ca librates the printer. Recycle or discard the page. Remove ink fr om your skin and clothing Follow these in structions to remove ink f rom your skin and clot hing: Surface Remedy Skin Wash the area with an a brasive soap.

Clean the HP Photosmart Use a soft clo th or slightly moi stened sponge t o wipe dust, smudg es, and stains off the case. The interior o f the product does not require cleaning.
10 Shop for ink supplies For a list of ink cart ridge numbers, see the pri nted documentation t hat came with the HP Photosmart. You can also use th e software that came with th e HP Photosmart to find out the re order number for all the ink cartridges.

• If you are using a power st rip, make sure t he power strip is turned on. Or, try plugging t he product directly into a powe r outlet. • Test the powe r outlet to make sure it is working. Plug i n an appliance tha t you know works, and see if the appliance has p ower.
Solution 5: Contact HP s upport for service Solution: If you have comple ted all of t he steps provide d in the pr evious solution s and are stil l having a probl em, contact HP supp ort for service. Go to: www.hp.com/support . If prompted, choose your country/region, and the n click Contact HP for technical support.
After setting up the pro duct, it does not print Try the followin g solutions to resolve the issue. Solut ions are listed in orde r, with the m ost likely solution fi rst. If the first solut ion does not solve the pro blem, continue trying the remaining solut ions until th e issue is resolved.
NOTE: You will be prom pted to set both the languag e and the co untry/region settings, by using the following p rocedure. To set your langu age and country/ region 1. Press and ho ld the Red-Eye Removal bu tton and then press the Print Photos button.
When I inse rt the CD-ROM in to my computer ’s CD-ROM drive, no thing happens Solution: If the insta llation does not run auto matically, you can st art it manu ally. To start the installatio n from a Windows computer 1. From the Windows Start menu, click Run (or click Accessorie s , and then Run ).
3. Verify that th e USB cable and power cord are plu gged in. 4. Click Retry to retry the connectio n. 5. Continue w ith the installa tion and restart the computer when prom pted. Cause: The USB connection bet ween the product a nd the computer failed.
c . Remove all the items that are related to the HP Pho tosmart Software . CAUTION: If the computer is manuf actured by HP or Compaq, do not remove any appli cations othe r than those listed belo w.
h . Click Apply , and then click Close . NOTE: If you receiv e a message statin g Access is denied while making changes, cli ck OK and continue. The messag e will not prevent you f rom making the changes. i . Click Restart to appl y the changes to the computer during th e next restart.
The registra tion screen doe s not appear Solution: You can access the registrat ion (Sign up now) screen f rom the Windows taskbar by clicking Start , pointing to Programs or All Programs , HP , Photosmart D5400 seri es , and then clicking Pro duct Registrati on .
When the soft ware installa tion is complete, the HP Digital Imaging Monito r icon appears in the Windows system tray. Paper jams To help avoid paper jams, fo llow these gu idelines: • Remove print ed papers from the out put tray f requently. • Prevent curled or wrinkl ed photo paper by storing all unused photo pape r flat in a resealabl e bag.
To clear a paper jam from the rear door 1. Press in the tab on t he left side of the rear door to relea se the door. Re move the door by pullin g it away from the p roduct.
• Always hold photo pa per by the edges. Fingerprints on ph oto paper can reduce pri nt quality. • Do not use paper th at is heavily textu red. It can cau se graphics or text to p rint improperly.
Solution 1: Make sure you are using genuin e HP ink cartridge s Solution: Check to see if your ink cartridge s are ge nuine HP ink cartrid ges. HP recommends t hat you use genuine HP ink cartridges. Genuine HP ink cartrid ges are designed and t ested with HP printers to help you easily produce great results, time after time.

If this did no t solve the issue, try the ne xt solution. Solution 4: Check the ink leve ls Solution: Check the estimated ink leve ls in the ink ca rtridges.
Solution 6: Align the printer Solution: Align the printer. Aligning the printer can help ensure excellent prin t quality. To align the printe r from the HP Photosmart Softw are 1. Load lette r, A4, or legal unu sed plain white paper into the input tray.
Ink is not filling th e text or graphics comp letely Try the following solutions if the ink is not fi lling the te xt or image comp letely so that it appears that parts a re missing or blank.
Solution 3: Check the print settings Solution: Check the print settings. • Check t he paper typ e setting to make sure it matches t he type of paper loaded in the input t ray. • Check the prin t quality setting an d make sure it is not set to o low.
If this did no t solve the issue, try the ne xt solution. Solution 6: Contact HP supp ort Solution: Conta ct HP support for service . Go to: www.hp.com/support . If prompted, choose your country/region, and the n click Contact HP for information on callin g for te chnical support.
Print the image wi th a high print quali ty setting, such as Best or Maxi mum dpi . For more information, see: •“ Change the print speed or qu ality” on page 34 •“ Print using Maxim um dpi” on page 40 Cause: The prin t quality setti ng was set too low .
Cause: The print quality setting was set too low. If this did no t solve the issue, try the ne xt solution. Solution 3: Align the printer Solution: Alig n the printer. Aligning th e printer can help ensure excellent print quality. To align the printer from the HP Photosmart Soft ware 1.
Cause: There w as a problem with the print head. Printouts are faded or have dull colo rs Try the follow ing solutions if the colors in your pr intout are not as bri ght and in tense as you expecte d.
If this did no t solve the issue, try the ne xt solution. Solution 3: Clean the print head Solution: If t he previous soluti ons did not re solve the issue, try cleaning the print head. After cleanin g the print head, print a self-test report. Evaluate the se lf-test report to see if the prin t quality pr oblem still exi sts.

4. Click the Device Ser vices tab. 5. Click Align the Pri nter . The product pri nts a test page, aligns the prin t head, and cali brates the pri nter.
If this di d not solve th e issue, try the next solu tion. Solution 3: En sure that the rear doo r is securely ins talled Solution: Make sure th at the rear door is securely installed. If you removed the rear door to clear a pa per jam, replace it. G ently push the do or forward until it snaps into place.
Paper is not pic ked up from the input tray Try the followi ng solutions to resolve t he issue. Solutions a re listed in orde r, with the m ost likely solution f irst. If the first solution does no t solve the problem, continue trying the remaining so lutions until the issue is resolved.
Make sure you have the following mat erials available : • A lint-free cloth, or any soft material that w ill not come apart or leave fibers. • Distilled , filtered, or bottled wa ter (tap wat er might conta in contamin ants that can damage the prin t cartridges).
NOTE: For this issue, t here is not a problem wi th your ink supplies. Th erefore, replacing the in k cartridges or print he ad is not necessary. • Solution 1: Use TrueType or OpenType fonts • Sol.
Solution 3: Clean the print head Solution: If the prev ious solutions di d not resolve the issue, try cleani ng the print head. After cleaning the print head, print a se lf-test report. Evaluate the self-test report to see if the print quality problem still exists.

Solution 3: Tuck the fl aps to avoid paper jams Solution: To avoid paper jam s, tuck the flaps i nside the envelope s. Cause: The fl aps might get ca ught in the rolle rs. Borderles s printing produces un expected results Solution: Try printing the image from the p hoto imaging soft ware that came with the product.
Solution 3: Selec t the correct printer Solution: Make sure you have selected the correct printer in your software application . TIP: You can set the product as t he default printer to ensure that the prin ter is automatically select ed when you select Print in the File men u of your different software app lications.
Cause: A delet ed print job w as in the queue. If this di d not solve th e issue, try the next solu tion. Solution 7: Clear the pape r jam Solution: Clear the paper jam . For more information, see: “ Clear paper jam s” on page 80 Cause: The pro duct had a paper jam.

If the conne ctions are secure, and not hing has printed several minutes after you sent a print job to the product , check the stat us of the product.
Solution 2: P rint a previously saved version o f the document Solution: Try printin g another document from the same softw are application. If this works, then try printi ng a previously saved version of the document that is not corrupt. Cause: The do cument was corrup t.
TIP: You can set the product as t he default printer to ensure that the prin ter is automatically select ed when you select Print in the File men u of your different software app lications. Cause: The product was not the se lected print er. If this did no t solve the issue, try the ne xt solution.
Solution 7: Clear the pape r jam Solution: Clear the paper jam . For more information, see: “ Clear paper jam s” on page 80 Cause: The pro duct had a paper jam. If this di d not solve th e issue, try the next solu tion. Solution 8: Ma ke sure the prin t carriage can move freely Solution: Unplug the power cable if it is not alre ady unplugged.
Cause: The computer was not com municating wit h the product. If this did no t solve the issue, try the ne xt solution. Solution 10: R eset the product Solution: Turn o ff the product, and then unplug the power cord . Plug the power cord back in, and then p ress the On button to t urn on the product.
Make sure the margi n settings for the do cument do not exceed the p rintable area of the product. To check your m argin settings 1. Preview you r print job befo re sending it to the prod uct. In most softwa re applicatio ns, click the File menu, a nd then click Print Preview .
Make sure that you remove all paper f rom the input tray befo re loading t he envelopes. For more information, see: “ Load envelopes” on page 23 Cause: A stack of en velopes was loaded incorr ectly. Solution 2: Check the layout of th e document Solution: Make sure the layou t of the document you are tryi ng to print f its on a paper size supported by the product. To preview the print layout 1. Load the correct pape r size into the input t ray. 2.

CD/DVD printing problem Solution: Make sure that th ere is suffici ent space behind the product and tha t the CD/DVD exit slot on the back of the product is not blo cked. If the p roduct is placed close to a wall, move it at least 7.5 cm (3 inche s) away from the wa ll.
Load paper Solution: If th e product is out of pa per or there are only a few sheets remai ning, load more paper in t he input tr ay. If there is paper in t he input tray, remove the paper, tap the st ack of paper against a flat surface, and reloa d the paper into the input tray.
