6 EN ST ARTING JLIP VIDEO CAPTURE NOTE • Close any other programs running on the PC. • Disable any programs that run in the background, such as screen savers, e-mail applica- tions, virus checkers, schedulers, etc. • T urn off file and printer sharing.
EN 7 INITIALIZA TION SELECTING THE CONNECTED DEVICE Y ou can use the JLIP Devices window to select a video source unit connected to one of the COM ports (RS-232C) after starting up JLIP Video Capture, or when you connect a different video sour ce unit.
8 EN CAUTION • The DV Controller window closes automatically when a slide show is started, or when Edit — Open Editor or Edit — Copy in Image Viewer is selected.
EN 9 3 Operation Buttons Power button Displays the power status of the connected video sour ce unit. Note that, depending on the video deck connected, it may not be possible to turn its power on and off. Capture button Captures the desired playback image.
10 EN IMAGE VIEWER WINDOW Select Window — Image V iewer in the Index window to open the Image Viewer window . This window is used to display images at full size, and to present images in an album as a slide show . NOTE • Each toolbar button function can also be performed from the menu bar .
EN 11 BASIC IMAGE CAPTURE This section describes basic image capture operations. For more detailed instructions, see pages 13-15. 1 Set up your equipment. • If using a video camera, insert a videocassette into it. •␣ Connect the video sour ce unit to your PC, and turn both on.
12 EN BASIC IMAGE CAPTURE (cont.) 4 V iew the image in the Image V iewer window . • Double-click the thumbnail image in the Index window . • The image is displayed in the Image Viewer window at its captured size. • Click the Image Viewer window’s Close button to return to the Index window .
EN 13 ADV ANCED CAPTURE FUNCTIONS IMPORTED IMAGE Squeeze/Cinema Y ou can select Squeeze or Cinema when adding wide-screen images (with an aspect ratio of 16:9) to an album. Squeeze Squeezes the image’s aspect ratio from 16:9 to 4:3. Cinema Inserts a black or white mask at the top and bottom of the image to convert its aspect ratio to 4:3.
14 EN Automatic Capture Preferences 1 Click the Play button in the DV Controller window . 2 Click the Automatic Capture button. CAUTION • Depending your PC’ s specifications and operating environment, the points where images are captured may not match what was set in the preferences.
EN 15 Interval Y ou can capture images at specified intervals. This function is useful for summarizing the contents of a tape, or for watching time-lapse movies using the slide show . 1 Select Interval in the Automatic Capture window . 2 Select the number of images to be captured.
16 EN SLIDE SHOW Slide Show Preferences Y ou can select the display interval during a slide show . 1 Select Preferences — Image Viewer from the Image V iewer window . 2 Make sure the Set Minimum box is unchecked, and select the interval (in seconds) between images.
EN 17 IMAGE CORRECTION 1 Select Preferences — Image V iewer in the Image Viewer window . 2 When displaying images captured from a fast action sequence, select Movement in Image Correction . • Images in the displayed album will be corrected for camera shake.
18 EN VIEWING IMAGES (cont.) IMAGE VIEWER APPEARANCE Y ou can toggle the display of the border (window frame and menu bar) and toolbar in the Image V iewer window . Hiding the Border 1 Select View — Border in the Image Viewer window to uncheck it. The window frame and menu bar disappear .
EN 19 SELECTING A BACKGROUND COLOR Y ou can select the background color in the Index window . 1 Select Preferences — Background Color in the Index window or Image Viewer window .
20 EN CHANGING THE IMAGE FORMA T Y ou can select JPEG, Bitmap (BMP) or DVF format for saving images, and adjust their settings. JPEG Preferences JPEG images are saved with a high compression rate, making them ideal for Internet web pages. 1 Select Preferences — Save Image in the Index window or Image Viewer window .
EN 21 Bitmap Preferences Bitmap (BMP) is the standard format used by W indows ® , and is supported by many software applications. 1 Select Preferences — Save Image in the Index window or Image Viewer window . 2 Select Bitmap in Image Format . 3 Select an image size in Image Size .
22 EN DVF Preferences DVF is the native format for storing still images from digital videotape. DVF images are saved without changing the data, so there is no loss of quality . 1 Select Preferences — Save Image in the Index window or Image Viewer window .
EN 23 SA VING AN IMAGE SA VING INDEX IMAGES Y ou can save index images separately from their album file. Before saving an image, set the desired image format and preferences.
24 EN ADDING IMAGE FILES TO THE INDEX WINDOW Y ou can add JPEG, Bitmap (BMP) and DVF images to the Index window . • T o add images to the Index window directly from a video source unit, see page 1 1. 1 Select File — Open . 2 Select the desired image format in the Files of type field.
EN 25 COPYING AN INDEX IMAGE Y ou can copy images within the Index window . 1 Click the image you wish to copy . 2 While holding down the Ctrl key , click and hold down the left mouse button on the index image you wish to copy , then drag it to the desired position.
26 EN DELETING AN INDEX IMAGE DELETING AN INDEX IMAGE Y ou can delete images in the Index window . 1 Click the image you wish to delete. • T o select multiple index images, hold down the Ctrl key and click each index image that you wish to delete. • T o select multiple sequential index images, click the first index image.
EN 27 ADDING IMAGES TO AN ALBUM ADDING IMAGES TO AN ALBUM Y ou can add images to an album by capturing them from a video source unit or by importing them from your PC’ s hard disk (JPEG/Bitmap/DVF). NOTE • When a JPEG or Bitmap image is added to the Index window , no time code is displayed.
28 EN COPYING AN IMAGE COPYING AN IMAGE INTO THE CLIPBOARD Y ou can copy an image displayed in the Image V iewer window into the clipboard for use in another application. 1 Select Edit — Copy . • Alternatively , you can press Ctrl-C. NOTE • Image data copied into the clipboard is resized to 640 x 480 (standard) or 848 x 480 (wide) pixels.
EN 29 EDITING AN IMAGE Y ou can load an external image editor application to modify an image. Before using this function, an image editor application must be installed. 1 Select Edit — Open Editor in the Image Viewer window . CAUTION • Refer to the image editor application’ s instructions for details about its operation.
30 EN CREA TING AN HTML ALBUM Y ou can save images in the Index window as an HTML album, which can then be viewed using an Internet browser . SA VING IMAGES IN HTML FORMA T 1 Select the images you would like to save in the Index window . (see page 23) • If no index images are selected, all of them will be saved as an HTML album.
EN 31 TROUBLESHOOTING • Confirm that your video source unit is connected to the AC adapter correctly . • Confirm that the cable is connected to your PC and video source unit correctly . • T urn on the power of the video source unit before starting up JLIP V ideo Capture.
32 EN TROUBLESHOOTNG (cont.) • This function may not operate correctly sometimes depending on your PC’ s specifications and operating environment. • This may occur␣ if you move the DV Controller window , operate its scroll bars or perform a file operation while capturing images.

34 EN Exiting JLIP Video Producer 1 Select File — Exit on the JLIP Video Producer window . When the confirmation screen appears, click Ye s . ST ARTING AND EXITING JLIP VIDEO PRODUCER Starting JLIP Video Producer 1 Connect the video sour ce unit to the PC using the JLIP connection cable, then turn the video sour ce unit on.
EN 35 Listbox Initializing JLIP Devices 1 Select Preferences — JLIP Devices . Select the serial port to which the device is connected and click Scan . 4 2 Select the player to be used by clicking on it in the listbox and then click Select . •Y ou do not need to perform the operation in step 2 when only one player is connected.

EN 37 1 P .AE/Effect buttons • Selects one of the 5 P .AE/Effects available per programmed scene. • T o cancel the selected effect, click the EC (Effect Clear) button. 2 Fade/W ipe Ef fect buttons • Selects one of the 7 Picture W ipes or 10 Fades/Wipes available per scene transition.
38 EN ! Jog/Shuttle Jog Dial Lamp (Inner lamp)/Jog Dial • Jog Dial mode is selected when the jog dial lamp is lit by clicking with the mouse. • It is possible to advance frames by clicking with the mouse on the left (reverse) or right (forward) arrows.
EN 39 $ Preview button • Playback the video from the In point to Out point specified for a program. • Recording does not result from clicking this button.
40 EN Editing Method when Using an Editing Deck other than JLIP 1 . Locate the In point using the player connected to the JLIP and put it in Playback-Pause mode. 2 . Click Edit Standby . 3 . Locate the In point of the recorder being operated by other than JLIP and put it in Record-Pause mode.
EN 41 Setting in/out points 1 T o set In/Out points, click Entry at the beginning and end of the scene you want to dub. •Set In/Out points so that the Out point comes after the In point. •If a scene has no Out point, program playback and dubbing will be disabled for that scene.
42 EN Playing back one programmed scene 1 Click on the line where the In/Out points you want to preview are displayed to highlight that line. 2 Click Preview . •The video source unit locates the scene by going to a point prior to the In point, then starts playback at the In point.
EN 43 Dubbing Y ou can record all programmed scenes onto a tape in the recorder . 1 Make sure there is an erase protection tab on the tape. Insert it into the recording deck and set the recording deck to the Record-Pause mode.
44 EN BASIC OPERA TIONS (cont.) Selecting a P .AE/Effect There are 5 P .AE/Effects available to spice up programmed scenes. Y ou can select only one effect per programmed scene. 1 Click on the scene where you want to use a P .AE/Effect. 2 Click the desired P .
EN 45 P .AE/Ef fect buttons SEPIA Recorded scenes have a brownish tint like old photos. Combine this with the Cinema mode for a classic look. VIDEO ECHO Adds a “ghost” to the subject, giving your recording a “fantasy” feeling. STROBE Y our recording looks like a series of consecutive snapshots.
46 EN BASIC OPERA TIONS (cont.) Saving the program list 1 Select File — Save As . •The Save As dialog box appears. 2 Enter a file name in the File name field. •The extension .vpd will be appended to the file name. ex.: travel.vpd 3 Click Save to save the program list as a file.
EN 47 1 Select File — Open . •The Open dialog box appears. 2 Saved file names appear in the File name field. Click on the file name you want so that it appears in the field below . 3 Click Open to load the file. •The JLIP Video Producer window returns.
48 EN Modifying the Length of a Scene 1 Select the scene by clicking the Program Select buttons on the controller . (Y ou can also select the scene by clicking on the line of the desired scene.) 2 Click In point or Out point on the controller and select the time code you want to modify .
EN 49 Adding a scene 1 Click the scene you want to add and select Edit — Add — Scene . 2 Enter the In and Out points you want to set, refering to Corrrecting program counter data on the page to the left. Dubbing onto one tape using two or more tapes 1 Click the scene at which the tape is to be changed and select Edit — Add — Change T ape .
50 EN T ransferring a programmed scene to another position 1 Click on the scene you want to transfer and select Edit — Cut . 2 Click on the scene number you want to paste. 3 Select Edit — Paste . NOTE: Cut — Paste operations are possible by clicking with the right mouse button.
EN 51 ADV ANCED OPERA TIONS Changing the ID number Y ou can change the ID number of the connected unit. The default ID number is 06 . NOTES: • Do not enter an ID number of 00 because JLIP V ideo Producer does not recognize ID 00 .
52 EN Adjusting the gap between stored In/Out points on the PC and dubbed ones on the recorder During dubbing, the beginning of the scene stored on the PC may be missed, or the scene prior to the transition you chose for the In/Out points may be dubbed onto the recorder .
