Setting up the printer October 1997 2-5 Cleaning the print head T o av oid lines or streaks in y our prints, clean the print head before using it f or the first time and whenev er you replace the ribbon. If y our site is par ticular ly dusty , y ou may need to clean the head more often.

Setting up the printer 2-8 October 1997 Loading the ribbon The ribbon provides dy es for printing images. Three-color ribbon contains three dye patches: y ellow , magenta, and cyan. Each three-color r ibbon, e xcept the three-color , o v ersiz e, e xtra-lif e ribbon, contains enough dye to mak e 100 pr ints.
Setting up the printer October 1997 2-9 Loading ribbon in the printer The ribbon fits easily in the printer . There is only one wa y to correctly place the spools. F ollow these steps to load a ribbon: IMPOR T ANT : Hold the ribbon spools by the ends to a void fingerpr ints.

Setting up the printer October 1997 2-13 Handling humidity–related paper problems If paper is e xposed to humidity lev els outside the recommended range, take e xtra care to help protect it as f ollows. • Load small amounts of paper rather than a whole pac kage.
Setting up the printer 2-14 October 1997 Loading media Thermal media—paper and transparencies—comes in various sizes . See Chapter 3 in this guide f or complete information about types and sizes of media The paper tra y adjusts to the size of the paper y ou want to load.

If large files are sent, f ewer jobs can be processed. Installing additional memory in the pr inter increases the number of jobs that can be processed at a time .

Troubleshooting the printer 4-2 October 1997 Err or messages and how to resolve them Error messages indicate that a problem has occurred. More than one problem can occur at a time . Howe v er , only one error message can appear at a time. Messages related to high-pr iority problems are displa yed bef ore lower priority ones.
Troubleshooting the printer October 1997 4-3 CLEAR RIBBON JAM The ribbon is jammed.This may be caused by a paper jam. Press Cancel to eject the paper. If the message persists, do as follows: 1. Clear the paper jam. 2. If necessary, clear the ribbon jam.
