Overview This guide is intended to be used by customers who are r eplacing Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) as well as trained service personnel who are r eplacing Field Replacement Units (FRUs). In this guide, CRUs and FRUs will often be referr ed to as parts.
Additional information resources If you have Internet access, the most up-to-date information for your computer is available from the W orld W ide W eb.
Chapter 1. Locations This chapter provides illustrations to help locate the various connectors, contr ols, and components of the computer . To open the computer cover , see “Opening the cover” on page 5. Locating components The following illustration will help you locate the various components in your computer .

Chapter 2. Replacing hardware Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading the “Important safety information” in the Safety and Warranty Guide that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer .
Replacing the power supply assembly Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading the “Important safety information” in the Safety and Warranty Guide that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer .
5. Disconnect the power supply cables 1 and 2 from the system boar d connectors and from all drives. 6. Remove the power supply cables from the cable clips and ties. 7. Slide the power supply assembly forward and r emove it from the computer .
Replacing the system board Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading the “Important safety information” in the Safety and Warranty Guide that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer .
4. While holding the rear of the computer chassis down, pull upwar d on the handle provided to r emove the PCI riser assembly and any adapters that are currently installed. 5. Carefully take note of the location of all cable connections on the system board.
7. Pull upward on the handle 1 to r elease the system board from the fr ont latch, slide the system board towar d the drive bay assembly , and then carefully lift the system boar d out of the chassis.
10. Remove the heat sink from the failing system boar d by pivoting the lever 1 securing the heat sink until it is fully in the up position. Carefully lift the heat sink off of the failing system boar d.
12. Lift the micropr ocessor straight up and out of the socket. Important Do not touch the gold contacts on the bottom of the micropr ocessor . When handling the micropr ocessor , touch only the sides. a. Note the orientation of the notches 1 on the micropr ocessor .
15. Lower the micropr ocessor straight down into the microprocessor socket. 16. Lower the micropr ocessor retainer 2 and then lower the lever 1 to secure the retainer .
19. Slide the system board towar d the rear of the computer until the front latch snaps into position. 20. Reconnect the cables that were disconnected fr om the system board. Make sure all cables ar e routed correctly . See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 4.
To replace the micropr ocessor , do the following: 1. Open the computer cover . See “Opening the cover” on page 5. 2. Pivot the drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the micr oprocessor . 3. Remove the heat sink from the system boar d by pivoting the lever 1 securing the heat sink until it is fully in the up position.
4. Release the lever 1 for the micropr ocessor retainer 2 securing the micropr ocessor 3 and pivot the retainer upward until it is fully open. 5. Remove the micropr ocessor from the system board socket by lifting the micropr ocessor straight up and out of the socket.
a. Note the orientation of the notches 1 on the micropr ocessor . This is important when installing the new micropr ocessor on the system board. b. Do not drop anything on the socket while it is open. Keep all contacts as clean as possible. 6. Make sure that the lever on the micr oprocessor retainer is fully open.
9. Lower the micropr ocessor straight down into the microprocessor socket. 10. Lower the micropr ocessor retainer 2 and then lower the lever 1 to secure the retainer .
11 . Use the thermal grease syringe to place five dr ops of grease on the top of the micropr ocessor . Each drop of grease should be 0.03ml (3 tick marks on the grease syringe). 12. Place the heat sink into position and lower the lever 1 to secure the heat sink.
This section provides instr uctions on how to replace the har d disk drive. Important When you receive a new har d disk drive, you also receive a set of Product Recovery CDs . The set of Product Recovery CDs will enable you to r estore the contents of the hard disk to the same state as when your computer was originally shipped from the factory .
5. Pivot the hard disk drive and bracket to the r ear , then pull the drive and bracket out of the drive bay by pulling on the blue handle. 6. Remove the failing hard disk drive fr om the bracket by flexing the bracket.
7. Install the new drive into the blue bracket, flex the bracket, and align the pins 1 through 4 on the bracket with the holes in the har d disk drive. Do not touch the circuit boar d 5 on the bottom of the hard disk drive. 8. Install the hard disk drive and bracket into the drive bay .
2. Pivot the drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the har d disk drive. 3. Disconnect the signal and power cables from the r ear of the optical drive. 4. Slide the optical drive lock 1 to the unlocked position. 5. Open the door at the front of the optical drive and slide it out the fr ont of the computer .
Replacing the diskette drive Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading the “Important safety information” in the Safety and Warranty Guide that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer .
4. Slide the diskette drive lock 1 to the unlocked position. 5. Slide the diskette drive towards the r ear of the computer and remove the drive. 6. Connect the flat cable to the new diskette drive. 7. Install the new drive from the r ear of the drive bay assembly and lock the drive into position.
2. While holding the rear of the computer chassis down, pull upwar d on the handle provided to r emove the PCI riser assembly and any adapters that are currently installed. 3. Pivot the drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the system boar d. 4.
5. Remove the memory module being replaced by opening the r etaining clips as shown. 6. Position the replacement memory module over the memory connector . Make sure the notch 1 on the memory module aligns corr ectly with the connector key 2 on the system board.
2. While holding the left rear of the computer chassis down, pull upwar d on the handle provided to r emove the PCI riser assembly including any adapters that are alr eady installed. 3. Open the adapter latch and remove the failing adapter . 4. Remove the new adapter from its static-pr otective package.
7. Close the adapter latch to retain the adapter . 8. Reinstall the PCI riser assembly into the system board. 9. Go to “Completing the parts replacement” on page 34.
3. Disconnect the fan assembly cables from the system boar d. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 4. Note: Make sure you note the location of the fan cables when you disconnect the cables from the system boar d. 4. Remove the front bezel by r eleasing the tab as shown and pivoting the bezel outward fr om the bottom.
6. Remove the fan assembly by releasing the tabs as shown. 7. Install the new fan assembly and connect the fan cables to the system board. 8. Reinstall the plastic fan insert. 9. Reinstall the front bezel. 10. Go to “Completing the parts replacement” on page 34.
2. Pivot the drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the system boar d. 3. Locate the internal speaker connector on the system board. See “Locating components” on page 1. 4. Disconnect the internal speaker cable from the system boar d. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 4.
6. Position the bottom of the new internal speaker into the metal tabs and then pivot the top of the internal speaker inward until the speaker snaps into position. 7. Connect the speaker cable to the system board. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 4.
2. Unplug all power cords fr om electrical outlets. 3. Locate the connector for the mouse. See “Locating controls and connectors on the front of your computer” on page 2 and “Locating connectors on the r ear of your computer” on page 3. 4. Disconnect the failing mouse cable from the computer .
2. Make sure that the cables ar e routed correctly befor e lowering the drive bay assembly . Important Correctly r oute all power supply cables to avoid interference with the drive bay assembly . Keep cables clear of the hinges and sides of the computer chassis.
To update (flash) the BIOS from a diskette or CD-ROM, do the following: 1. Insert a system program update (flash) diskette or CD into the diskette drive or optical drive. System program updates ar e available at http://www .lenovo.com/support on the W orld W ide W eb.
