MID-7604/7602 Power Drive 6 ni.com • Pollution D egree 2 — Normally only noncon ductiv e pollu tion occurs. Occasionally , noncon ducti ve pollution becomes conducti ve because of condensation. • Pollution D egree 3 — Conductiv e poll ution or dry , n onconductiv e pollution occurs.
© National Instruments Corporation 7 MID-7604/7602 Power Drive The following is a diagram of a sample installati on. Warning The stepper motor connectors on this dri ve are energized when the unit is powered on. Disconnect the MID-7604/7602 unit from t he po w er outlet before connecting wires to or disconnecting wires from the stepper connectors.
MID-7604/7602 Power Drive 8 ni.com The two rock er switches on the MID-7604/7602 front panel are the A C POWER and EN ABLE. Figure 1 sho ws the location of these switch es. The A C PO W ER switch energizes the motor bus (+24 V) and the logic (+5 V) pow er supplies.
© National Instruments Corporation 9 MID-7604/7602 Power Drive Caution Be sure to turn off the EN ABLE switch and the main A C power to your MID-7604/7602 and host comput er before connecting the accessory to your motion controller . Warning The stepper motor connectors on this dri ve are energized when the unit is powered on.
MID-7604/7602 Power Drive 10 ni.com If the DC power supplies are acti ve, the green po wer LED illuminates. If this LED fails to illuminate, check the power cord and the main input fuse on the f ront panel. The LED status array is arranged b y motor axes.
© National Instruments Corporation 11 MID-7604/7602 Power Drive Front Panel DIP Switch Settings The MID-7604/7602 front panel has a detachable metal plate that when remov ed provides access to four 10-position DIP switch banks. Refer to Figure 1 for the location of t hese switches.
MID-7604/7602 Power Drive 12 ni.com Microstepping Selection The MID-7604/7602 uses bipolar chopper, tw o -phase microsteppi ng dri vers with a broad range of microstep rates. The factory default setting is 10-times microstepping (2,000 steps/rev with standard 1.
© National Instruments Corporation 13 MID-7604/7602 Power Drive Output Current Settings The MID-7604/7602 can provide 0.20 – 1.4 A peak (0.14 – 1AR M S ) , depending on the peak output current DIP switch settings for each axis. DIP switches 1 through 4 control the peak o utput current.
MID-7604/7602 Power Drive 14 ni.com T o determine the maximum total power dissipation of all of the m otors combined, add up the maximum po wer each motor can dissipate. If this v alue is less than or equal to 80 W continuous, you will not exceed the capabilities of the MID -7604/7602.
© National Instruments Corporation 15 MID-7604/7602 Power Drive Inhibit Input Polarity Setting The MID-7604/7602 has a DIP switch that globall y sets the polarity f or the inhibit input for all axes. DIP switch 10 on the axis 1 DIP switch ban k controls this setting.
MID-7604/7602 Power Drive 16 ni.com Back Panel Connector Wiring Motor Power T erminal Blocks Each axis on the MID-7604/7602 has a separat e 5-position remov able scre w terminal block for motor power wiring. Figure 4 sho ws a typical stepper motor configuration pin assignment.
© National Instruments Corporation 17 MID-7604/7602 Power Drive Caution Ne ver connect unused cent er taps or winding terminals to pin 3 ( ground) or to each other . Encoder T erminal Blocks For quadrature incremental encoder signals, each MID-760 4/7602 axis has a separate 8-position remov able screw terminal block.
MID-7604/7602 Power Drive 18 ni.com If the encoder cable length is great er than 10 ft, use encoders wit h line dri ver outputs for your applicatio ns. Po wer for a +5 V encoder — generated by a po wer supply inside the M ID-7604/760 2 — is a vailable on pin 7 .
© National Instruments Corporation 19 MID-7604/7602 Power Drive Figure 8 shows clockwise and counter- clockwise motor rotatio n. Figure 8. Clockwise and Counter -Clockwise Motor Rotation When connecting the enco der wiring to your MID-7604 /7602, use shielded wire of at least 24 A WG.
MID-7604/7602 Power Drive 20 ni.com Limit Switch T erminal Blocks For end-of-tra vel limit, home, inhibit in put, and inhibit output connecti ons, MID-7604/7602 axes hav e a separate, 6-position removable scre w terminal connector block. Figure 10 shows the limit switch terminal block pin assignments.

MID-7604/7602 Power Drive 22 ni.com Accessories for Optional Use Strain-Relief Bar The strain-relief bar provid es strain relief for wiring t o the back panel terminals of the MID-7604 /7602. The arms of the strain-relief bar attach to the s ides of the MID-76 04/7602 with the thumb nuts facing upward, as shown in Figure 15.
© National Instruments Corporation 23 MID-7604/7602 Power Drive Panel-Mount Kit (Included) The panel-mount kit allows you to m ount the MID-7604/7602 i nside a cabinet or enclosure. Using the provided screws, attach the panel-mount kit to the rear and front set of screw holes on the side p anels of the MID-7604/7602, as sh own in Figure 16.
MID-7604/7602 Power Drive 24 ni.com Stepper Motor Configurations This section describes the various industry-stand ard winding configurations for stepper motors and sho ws how to connect them to a MID-7604/7602. The MID -7604/7602 is compatible with all configurations of two-phase stepper motors.
© National Instruments Corporation 25 MID-7604/7602 Power Drive For maximum fle xibility , y ou can connect 8-wire stepper motors in either a series or parallel configuration.
MID-7604/7602 Power Drive 26 ni.com Notice that an 8-wire motor wired in series is virtually identical to a 6-wire motor and typically has the same high-torque b ut lo w-speed characteristics.
