5 P owerline Adapter Setup If you do not have Powerline adapter s at home, do the following: 1. Plu g the XA V1601 adapter into a n AC wall outlet near your Wi-Fi router/gat eway . 2. P lug the XA U251 1 ada pter into the AC wall outlet where you want to hear the m usic or put the printer .
6 If you have Powerline ada pte rs at home, do the following: Make sure the new XAU251 1 and XA V1601 adapters and you r e xisting adapters are on the same se curity key so they can work together: 1. Plu g the XAU251 1 into a power outlet. 2. Wh en the Power LED light s, press the Security button for 2 seconds until th e Power LED starts to blink.
7 T roubleshooting If the Powerline LED is not green, p lug the Powerline adapter into the wall po wer outlet. If there is a po wer strip, plug the power strip into the Powerline adapter socket. After you finish plug ging in the adapt er and if the Powerline LED is off or red, place the Powerline adapter into anoth er AC wall outlet.
8 P owerline Music Extender Features The Powerline Music Extender pr ovides music and networking features. The Play Music Anywhere features let you play music wirelessly . The networking features let you connect USB storage devices and USB print er/scanners to your home network.
9 Play Music Anywhere Features The Play Music Anywhe re features are ReadySHARE Ai rMusic and ReadySHARE Music. ReadySHARE AirMusic ReadySHARE AirMusic lets you play music wirelessly from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Android device s. The music is play ed on audio speakers, such as USB speakers or a Hi-Fi stereo system.
10 Networking Features The networking features let you conne ct any USB printer and USB hard drive to your home network so th ey can be accessed through WiFi. The XAU251 1 adapter shares the USB de vices for remote access with other users or comput ers anywhere in the home.
11 Extend Internet and Home Network to Any Outlet The Powerline Music Extender use s an Ethernet port to convert a standard ele ctrical wall outlet into a high-speed network connection.
12 Set up ReadySHARE AirMusic ReadySHARE AirMusic is for smart phones and t ablets. This setup procedure only works if you have a Wi-Fi netwo rk at home that c omes from a WiFi router , gateway , or extender . Router/Gateway Ste p 1 Ste p 2 Ste p 3 Step s 4 & 5 1.
13 Note: Make sure that the smart pho ne or tablet is connected to the WiFi network of the Router/Gateway that is connected to the XAV1601 Powerline adapter. For iOS devices (such a s an iPhone, iPad, or iPod): 1. Lau nch the music application (for example, iPod).
14 2. Download a free Airplay applicat ion and launch it.T wonky Mobile is recommended. 3. S elect the music source. 4. Ch oose a song and play it. 5. Once the music plays, press the Beam button and select XAU251 1 . Music plays on your remote speaker thro ugh the XAU251 1.
15 Set up ReadySHARE Music on Computers First Inst allation 1. Plu g the speake r into the XAU251 1. 2. Ins ert the CD-ROM into your computer . 3. Inst all the NETGEAR USB Media Exte nder utility that is available on the CD-ROM. 4. Launch the utility .
16 6. Click the Connect button. The music played on the computer is played on the remote au dio system. 7. T o stop playing the music on t he XAU251 1 device, select the Disconnect button as shown in the figure. After the First Installation The NETGEAR USB Media Extender ut ility is always running in the background.
17 T roubleshooting • It takes between 30 seconds to 1 minute to detect th e remote XAU251 1 the first time. • If after pressing the Connect button the music is not played remotely , press the Disconnect button and press the Connect button again.
18 Set up ReadySHARE Printer Y ou can have multiple printe rs or scanners working simultaneously if each USB printer/scanner is con nected to an XAU251 1 adapter . 1. Co nnect the USB printer or scanner/fax to the USB port on the XAU251 1. 2. Ins tall the NETGEAR USB Media Extender utility and launch the application.
19 3. After a few seconds, the USB Me dia Extender utility shows that the XAU251 1- XX detected the printe r/scanner/fax and is waiting for the connection.
20 4. Click the printer/scanner device listing a nd press the Connect for Scan/Fax function bu tton. Y our remote printer/scanner /fax is now connected as if it was connected locally through the USB cable. T o print or scan, open the application (such as, Word or Excel), select the Print func tion and select the printer .
21 Set Up R eadySHARE USB Storage 1. Connect any storage device to the USB port of the XAU251 1. For example, you cou ld connect a USB hard drive or a USB memory stick. 2. Install the NETGEAR USB Media Extender utility and launch the application. The utility is available on the CD-ROM.
22 3. After a few seconds, the USB Me dia Extender utility shows that the storage d evice is connected to the XAU251 1-XX. 4. Select the storage device and p ress the Browse Share button. A window displays that let s you browse the remote storage de vice directories .
23 Advanced Setup Use Advanced Setup to secure the Powerline network. 1. Plu g the two ad apters (XAU251 1 and XA V1601) into AC wall outlets. 2. Make su re that the Powerline LEDs on each adapter ar e lit. When the LED s are lit, it mea ns that the adapters ar e associat ed with each other and con nected to the network.
24 LED Descriptions The LEDs indicate the status of your Powerline ada pters. • Wh en you plug in the adapter , the Power LED lights up an d turns green. • T he Powerline LED lights up when the adapter detects at least one other comp atible Powerline device.
25 Button Descriptions The buttons on your Powe rline adapters let you do the following: • Security button: U se the Security button to secure the P owerline network between adapters. Press the Security bu tton for 2 seconds on each adapter to p air adapters and to set a new random security key .
