5 PREPARATION CONNECTING POWER Using Batte ries You can power yo ur Micro-39 wi th two AA b at- teries (n ot supplied) or rech argeable AA Ni -Cd batteries (not suppl ied). For the b est perfor- mance a nd longes t life, we re commen d Ra- dioShac k alkaline b atteries.
6 1. Slide the battery compar tment co ver i n the dire ction of the arrow . 2. Inse r t the batteries into t he comp ar tment as indic ated by the polarity sy mbols (+ and –) mar ked in side. 3. R eplac e th e c ov er. If REC ORD/BA TT lights d imly du ring reco rding, or it does not l ight at al l, replace the batte ries.
7 Using AC Power You can pow er the Mic ro-39 using an 3V, 300- mA AC ad apter and a s ize H Adaptap lug ® (nei- ther su pplie d). Both a re avai lable at your local Radio S hac k sto re. Cautions: Y ou must u se a C lass 2 power source that supplies 3V D C and delivers at leas t 300 m A.
8 1. Set the AC ada pter 's volt age swi tch to 3V if it is e quippe d with a v oltage se lectio n switch. 2. Insert th e AC ad apter’s Adap taplug in to th e AC adapter' s cord so i t reads TIP–. 3. Insert t he adapter’s barrel plu g into DC 3V on the re corder .
9 Cautions : Y ou must us e a pow er source that supplie s 3V D C and d elivers at least 30 0 mA. Its center tip must be s et to neg ative and its pl ug must fit t he Micro -39's DC 3V jack. Us ing an a dapter that does not meet thes e specific ations could d amage th e Micro-39 or the ada pter .
10 3. Insert the barr el plug into the Micro -39's DC 3V jack . Note: Inse rtin g the b arre l plug int o the Micro -39's DC 3V jack discon nects the internal batteries . 4. Plug the other en d of the DC adapter in to the veh icle's cigarette-l ighter socket.
11 Insert th e earphone 's plug i nto the rec order's EAR jack. The in ternal spea ker automat ically discon nects . Listening Safel y To prot ect your hear ing, follow these guid elines when y ou use a n earphone . • Se t the volu me to the lowest se tting befo re you beg in liste ning.

13 OPERATIO N LOADING A MICROCASSET TE TA P E Note: We recomme nd MC-60 mi crocassette tapes for up to 2 hours of recor ding/p laybac k time, or MC-90 mi crocas set te tape s for u p t o 3 hours of record ing/play back ti me.

15 1. Set VOX to ON . 2. Load a t ape. 3. Set T APE SP EED on the side of the recorder as fol low s : • T o doubl e the tape’ s recordi ng/playb ack time, se t TA P E SPEED to 1.2 . This se tting allow s 120 min utes of tota l recordin g/ playba ck time on an MC-60 tape, or 18 0 minutes on an M C-90 tape.
16 4. Press RECORD to begin record ing. Both RECORD and PLA Y lock down , and the RECORD/BA TTERY indicator (to the right of the ta pe counte r) lig hts . Notes : •T h e VOLUME /VOX SEN S setting deter- mines th e sound lev el that acti vates the VOX circuit and starts recordin g when the reco rder picks up sound .

18 PLAYING A T APE 1. Load the micr ocassett e tape. 2. Set T APE SPE ED to the sp eed us ed wh en the tape was recorded. 3. Press PLA Y to b egin play .
19 5. The ta pe automa tically stops when it reaches the end. Press ST OP/E JECT to stop pl ayback s ooner . Using Fast Play To play a tape about 30% faster th an the n or- mal p layback spe ed, mov e F AST PLA Y to ON . To resum e normal s peed play back, mo ve FA S T PLA Y to OFF .
20 slide REV /REW CUE/F AST-F to the center posi- tion w hen the tap e reaches th e end. To hear the tape pl ay at a faster speed as it fast -forward s or re winds, slid e REV/REW CUE/ FA S T - F to REV/REW or CUE/F AST-F duri ng pl ay- back . Whe n you r eleas e the s witc h, nor mal playba ck resum es.
21 USING THE T APE COUNTER You can use the tape co unter to note di fferent locatio ns on yo ur tape dur ing record ing or p lay- back. Before pla ying or rec ording a tape , rewind the tape com pletely and press the counte r’s reset button t o set the counter to 000 .
22 T APE TIPS STORING CASSETTE T APES Do not expos e mic rocas sette tapes to hig h tem- pera ture s, high humi dity , dus t or dir t, or mo tors , transform ers, or o ther sourc es of str ong mag- netic fi elds.
23 ERASING T APES To record over a m icrocasse tte tap e, simply record a s usual. The tap e recorder re cords over the pr evious r ecording. You can quickly erase bo th sides of a casset te tape us ing a Ra dioShack bulk tape eraser. PREVENTING ACCIDENTA L ERASURE Microc assette tape s have two erase-pro tectio n tabs — on e for each side.
24 If you lat er deci de to record on a ta pe side af ter you ha ve remo ved t he erase-p rotection tab, place a p iece of stro ng plastic tape over that side’ s era se-p rote cti on ho le. B e sure you co ver only the hole origin ally cov ered by the erase- prote ction tab.
25 CARE To enjo y yo ur Optimus Micro-39 Microc asset te Recorder for a long time: • Ke ep the recorder dry . If it gets wet, wipe it dry im medi a tely . • Ha ndle the recorder g ently an d careful ly . Don’t drop it. • Us e and store th e recorder on ly in normal tempera ture enviro nment s.

Use a c otton swab dipped in tape hea d cleani ng solutio n or denatur ed alcoho l to gently clean the record/pl ayback head, pinch ro ller , capstan, and tape g uides.
27 4. Press STOP/EJEC T to rele ase th e tape - handlin g parts. Then clo se the cassette compar tment cov er and reconn ect pow er . Note: For easier c leani ng, you can use a m icro- casse tte cleane r kit, whic h include s a specia l cleani ng casset te.
