8 Unpacki ng Open shi pping cart ons and check for s hi pping dam age. Report any dam age immedi a t ely to your di stri butor and s hi pping agent . Do not discar d any shippi ng m a ter ial unti l the Joi nter is assem bled and runni ng properly.
9 A s sembl y Ex posed met a l surf aces, such a s the t able and f ence, ha v e been giv en a protec tive coat ing at the f actory . Th i s coati ng should be rem ov ed with a soft cloth and solv ent (such as mi neral spirit s) once the m achi ne has been a ssembl ed.
10 The guar d is spring tensi oned. W hen m ount ed, it m ust ha v e enough t ension t o com pletel y cover the cut terhead, and press f i r ml y against t he f ence. Test t he tension by swingi ng the guard away f rom the f ence and then releasi ng it.
11 I nstallin g Belt Guard an d Door Refer t o Figur e 9. Mount the belt guard ov er the shaft as s hown, and instal l the knob to secure it i n p lace. Set t he li p o f the door over the bot tom edge o f the stand openi ng. Rot ate the door knob to hol d the door t o the stand.
12 I nstallin g Fence Handwheel Refer t o Figur e 12. Instal l t he handw heel (H) ont o the shaf t, and ti ghten the set screw wit h a 3 m m hex wrench. 13 If the j o int er is to be hard- wired to a panel , m ake sure a disco nnect i s a v ailabl e for the oper ator. Duri ng hard-wiri ng o f t he m ach i ne, m ake sure the f us es hav e been remov ed or the br eakers hav e been tripped in t he circuit to which t he joi nter will be connected.
14 Thr ee-Ph ase Tes t R un On t he three-phase uni t, after wiri ng has been com pleted, you shoul d check that the inc o m ing leads hav e been connect ed properl y : 1.
15 1. Di sconnect m achi ne fr o m power source. 2. Rem ove the bel t guard so that you can rotat e the cutt erhead by tur ning the mot or pull ey or by mov ing the drive belt .
16 10. The ti ghteni ng process shoul d conti nue at least t wo more tim es, each t ime tighteni ng the scre ws mor e on all three kniv es. O n the thi rd t im e, they should all be f irml y ti ghtened. Befo re starting t he join ter, make sure al l gib screws are fi rmly tig hte ne d.
17 Lev eli n g T ab les Refer t o Figur e 20. The t ables hav e been leveled wit h each other from the f ac tor y, but this should be confi rmed by the user, and checked peri odic a lly , by placing a steel st raight edge across both t ables. I f t ables are not l evel, this may be the result o f l oose gibs.

19 Aft er the outf eed table has been s et at the corr ect hei ght, it should not be c hanged ex cept f or s peci al operati ons or a f ter replaci ng kn iv es. Examp les of inco rrect settings: If the outfeed t able is too hi gh, the fini shed surf ace of the workpi ece w ill be taper ed ( Fi gure 23).

21 Operatin g Controls Start /Stop Powe r I nd ica tor Light – The s tart s witch has a power i ndicat or lamp which is on w henever th ere is pow er conn ected to t he Joint er, not just when the J ointer is runni ng. Do not as sume that no light means ther e is no pow er to t he machine.
22 Basic Jointer Op erati on NOT E: If y ou are inex perienc ed at j ointi ng , use scrap pi eces of lum ber to chec k setti ngs and get the f eel o f operations bef ore attem pting regul ar w ork.
23 I M PO RT AN T : W hen stock i s longer t han twice the l ength of the inf eed and outf eed tables, an assistant or support tabl e must be u sed to support the stock. Always u se a hold down or pu sh block when s urf acing short stock or sto ck less than 3 inches thi ck.
24 Skewin g (Sh ear C uttin g ) W hen edging or f acing burl or birds-eye m aple, it i s not unusual t o def ace or mar the surf ace being f inished. T his i s caused by the c utter head kniv es occasional ly c utting agai nst the gr ain.
25 Rabbe ting A rabb et cut requires removal of the cu tter guard . Use extreme caut ion and keep hands cl ear of cutt erhead. Always rep lace gu ard immed iately aft er rabb eting operati on is complet e d. Refer t o Figur e 37. A rabbet is a gr oov e cut along t he edge of a board.
