8 CONNECTING TO POWER Plug o ne end of the su pplied 3-prong AC power cord into th e AC po wer jack on the back o f the fax m achine. Then plug th e other end i nto a st andard grounded 3-pron g AC power outlet. Cautio n : The p olari zed 3-prong plug only fits in 3-pron g outlets.
9 SETTING UP THE FAX MACHIN E SETTI NG THE T ELE PHONE DIALING MO DE Set / (Tone/ Pulse) on the fax machine’s left side f or the type of ser- vice yo u have. If you are not sure what type you have, do this t est. 1. Lift the handset and listen f or a dial tone.
10 LOADING AND REPLACING PAPER Before you use your mac hine, load the supplied f ax paper roll. Repla ce the paper when the ERRO R indicator lights and the f ax machine displays NO PAPE R . Your fax machine uses up to a 98-foot (30-meter) roll. Notes: • The outer diameter of the paper roll cannot be m ore th an 2 in ches.

SETTING THE DATE AND TI M E Set the date and t ime so they appear in the top margin of all sent faxes. Note: To cancel the date and time set- ting procedure , press STOP any time before you press ENTER .

13 ENTERING NAMES Some options require you to select and store charac ters — for examp le, entering your name or s toring nam es for memory dialing. Follow these steps when the f ax m a- chine prompts you to enter a name. 1. Repeatedl y press the num ber but - t on l a be l l ed wi th th e c har act er yo u want un ti l that charac ter appears .

15 STORING NUMBERS FOR AUTOM ATIC DIALING Storin g a Number fo r On e-T ouc h Dia ling You can st ore up to five t elephone or fax numbers for one-touch dialing. You can then qu ickly dial t he numb er by pressing the one -touch but ton where you stored it.
16 Storin g a Number fo r M emory D iali ng You can store up to 30 te lephone or fax numbers into two-digi t memory dial locations. You can then dial the number by pressing MEMORY and then entering the t wo-digit numb er where you stored it. Note: To stop storing a number, press STOP an y time before S tep 4.
17 USING THE T ELEPHONE MAKING A CALL 1. Pick up the hands et, or press DIAL . Y ou hea r a dial tone. 2. Dial the tel e phone number. If you stored the number in m em- ory , press the one-t ouch button (next to the handset cradle) or press MEM O R Y a nd the two-di git location number .
18 SWITCHING FROM PULSE TO T O NE DIALING If you hav e pulse (rotary) service, you can still use touch-tone s ervices, such as alternate long distance, by follow- ing th ese steps. 1. Enter the special service’s num- ber using pulse dialing. 2. When t he spe cial service answers, press LDT ( * ) on the key- pad.
19 USING THE FAX MACHIN E MAKING A COPY Your fax machine can copy docu- ments. T his lets y o u make test copi es so y o u can check yo ur fax mach ine’s transmission quality before sending document s.
20 SENDING FAXES Fax T ips To ensure the best fax transmission results: • Never send doc uments th at are excess ively curl e d, thin, to rn, coated, or crumpled. • Let wet ink or c o rrection fluid on document s dry com pletely b efore you sen d them .
21 Sett ing th e Resolu tion an d Co ntrast You can use the FI N E / PHO T O and CONTRAST bu ttons to adjust t he reso- lution and c ontrast, so you c an send high-quality doc uments or doc uments with unusual c ontrast characteristics, including photographs .
22 If you do not insert another page within 5 seconds, the fax machine sounds a l ong beep and en ds t he call. : OK Note: You can confirm the transmis- sion re sult by printin g out a c onfirma- tion report.
23 Can celing a T ransmiss ion If you do not w ant to finish send ing a document , you can press STOP at any time t o cancel it . RECEIVING FAXE S Rec ept ion Mo des Your fax machine h as four reception modes. To select a recept ion mode, repeatedly press RECEIVE unt il the fax machine di splays the des ired selec- tion.
24 ADVA NCED FEATURES USING CALL REQ UEST If you a r e sendin g or receiving a d ocu- ment and you ne ed to speak to the other person during the s ame phone call, use call request t o alert t he per- son at the remote fax machine. You can als o respond to a c all request made b y the p erson at the remote fax machine.
25 RECEIVING A FAX AT AN EXTENSI O N T ELEP HONE You can recei ve a fax from someone you are talking to on a te lephone con- ne cte d to the EXT LINE jack, wit hout having to go to the fax m achine . 1. When y ou hear a fax tone, press * 9 * on the extension telephone.

28 Note: If yo u use your f ax m achine as both a telephone and a f ax machine, we suggest you set the ring count t o at least 4 t o g ive y ou time to answer . Remote Receive Code —T h e remote receive code lets you start receiving a fax from a phone plugged into the EXT LI NE jack.
29 T ROUBLESHOOTING ERROR MESSAGES COMM .E RRO R — The re is a problem with a f ax comm unication. This could be caused by a po or-quality phone connection o r by som eone p icking up a telephone on the same line as one of the fax machines. Try again.
30 4. Remove t he jam med document. 5. Replace t he roller . Make s ure the roller ’s tab s lock in t o p lac e . 6. Close the cover so it clicks shut, then plug in the fax machine’s power cord. CLEARING A PAPER JAM If the t herm al paper jams, do NOT pull the pape r out of the sl ot.

33 CLEANING THE ROL LER AND SCANNING G LASS Occasional ly clean the white roller and the scanning glass to ens ure a clear fax reproduction. If you see a bl ack line on incom ing faxes or if your sent faxes have black vertical lines on them, clean th e roller and scanning glass immediate ly.
