10 Important Information Disc Precautions Be Careful of Scratches and Dust BD, DVD and CD discs are sensitive to dust, fingerprints and especially scratches. A scratched disc may not be able to be played back. Handle discs with care and store them in a safe place.

14 Intr oduction to Connections This Player is equipped with the terminals/jacks listed below . Find the corresponding terminal/jack on your video equipment. Using the supplied cable or commercially available cables, connect the video first. Then connect the audio.

20 Loading the Batteries in the Remote Control Press down on the tab in the dir ection of the arrow to r emove the battery cover . Load the two “AAA” size batteries (R-03 size, UM/SUM-4) supplied with the remote contr ol unit. Make sure that the battery poles m and n are positioned as indicated.
p Disc Playback 21 If remote contr ol does not work First, press POWER to turn on this player . Press POWER on the r emote control and check the front panel display (RC-1, RC-2 or RC-3). Set the remote contr ol code according to the display and press POWER to see if you can turn on/off the Player .
22 T ur ning the Power On T ur ning the power on Press POWER on the r emote control or on the Player to turn on the power of the Player . Entering standby Press POWER on the r emote control or on the Player to enter standby . If you press POWER again immediately after entering standby , the Player may not turn on.
p Disc Playback 23 Before Starting Playback T ur ning Off the LCD Backlight and Indications If you feel that the indicators on the Player are too bright when watching movies, you can turn them off except for the ON indicator . Quick operation Press LIGHT to turn the LCD backlight on or off.
24 This section explains playback of commercially available BD Video and DVD Video discs (like movies), CDs, and recor ded DVD-RW/R discs. Opening the front panel door This function indicates the front panel door can be opened/closed automatically . By opening the door , you can open/close the disc tray and operate the playback functions.
p Disc Playback 25 Using the disc menu DVD VIDEO Example: Select “SUBTITLE LANGUAGE”. Press POP-UP MENU . The disc menu screen is displayed. Press a / b to select “SUBTITLE LANGUAGE”, then press ENTER . The screen for selecting the subtitle language is displayed.

p Disc Playback 29 Partial Repeat Playback (Repeat Playback of a Specified Part) DVD VIDEO DVD-R DVD-RW AUDIO CD NOTE Some operations in the following playback function cannot be performed depending on the specifications of the disc. • Press REPEA T during playback.
30 Switching the Angle If multiple angles are r ecorded, you can switch between them. Press ANGLE during playback. The display indicates the angle number currently being played back. Each time you press ANGLE , the angle switches. “–” is displayed if a disc is recor ded with only one angle.
p Disc Playback 31 CD-R JPEG CD-RW JPEG NOTE This Player can play still images (JPEG files) that have been recorded on CD-RW/R discs. For details on the still images that you can play using this Player , refer to “About the JPEG file format” on page 8.
32 Function Control This allows you to adjust various settings at once, like subtitles, angle settings and the title selection for Direct Playback. Y ou can adjust the video and audio to suit your prefer ences. The operations are the same for BD and DVD.
p Disc Playback 33 Functions which can be set Settings During Playback Shows the title number being played back. Y ou can skip to the start of the title. T o skip to the start of a selected title, press the Number buttons to enter the title number when this option is highlighted.
34 SETTINGS Settings Common operations The “MENU” enables various audio/visual settings and adjustments on the functions using the remote contr ol unit. Y ou need to call up the OSD to perform settings for this player . The following is the explanation for the basic operations of the “MENU”.
Settings q 35 SETTINGS AUDIO VIDEO SETTINGS TV ASPECT RA TIO Y ou can set the screen aspect ratio of the connected TV , and adjust the video output. If you switch your TV (i.e. because you have bought a new one) and the screen aspect ratio of the connected TV changes, you will have to change the “TV ASPECT RA TIO” setting.
36 ANGLE MARK DISPLA Y This lets you turn the Angle Mark Display on or off when DVD video recor ded with multiple angles is played back. (The Angle Mark is displayed in the lower right screen.) YES, NO P ASSWORD SETTING This sets the password for setting or changing the Par ental Control Level.

38 SETTINGS USB MEMOR Y MANAGEMENT The following instructions explain how to delete data such as the Virtual Package data copied to a USB memory device. CAUTION Do not remove the USB memory device or unplug the AC cord while the erase is being performed.
Settings q 39 SETTINGS SOFTWARE UPDA TE This function allows software updates by inserting a USB memory device with the update file into the BD STORAGE/SERVICE terminal on this player . Regarding how to obtain the softwar e update file, please call 1-800-BE-SHARP .
40 SETTINGS Press ENTER to start updating. The screen becomes dark for a while until the update screen can be displayed. Please wait for the update screen to appear . Do not unplug the AC cord. THE PICTURE WILL TEMPORARIL Y GO DARK UNTIL THE SOFTWARE UPDA TE DISPLAY APPEARS.
Appendix r 41 RS-232C port specifications RS-232C port specifications PC Control of this Player When a program is set, this Player can be contr olled from the PC using the RS-232C terminal. The power can be turned on or off (standby) and automatic programed playback is possible.
42 T r oubleshooting The Player power cannot be turned on. Is the power cord firmly plugged into the AC outlet? When the power cord is plugged into an AC outlet, pr ess and hold POWER on the Player until “ ” appears on the front panel display . Then, after the ST ANDBY indicator is lit, turn on the power .
Appendix r 43 Left and right channels of audio are r eversed, or sound comes out of only one side. Are left and right audio cables connected to the opposite terminal, or is one side disconnected? Disc does not play back automatically . Have you set a disc that has an automatic playback function? The Player heats up during use.
44 Glossary BD-J application The BD-ROM format supports Java for interactive functions. “BD-J” offers content pr oviders almost unlimited functionality when creating interactive BD-ROM titles. BDMV (page 7) BDMV (Blu-ray Disc Movie, BD-MV) refers to one of the application formats used for BD-ROM which is one of the Blu-ray Disc specifications.
