9 Meet AIBO Meet AIBO This chapter introduces you to the entertainment robot AIBO ERS-210, its supplied accessories, and the preparations that are required in order to play with it.
10 Introduction What is AIBO? “ AIBO” is the name given to the Son y entertainment robot. Dev eloped to encourage human and robot interaction, AIBO creates and introduces you to new pleasures and lifestyles. The name “ AIBO” is coined from the words “ A.
11 Meet AIBO A four-legged r obot with rich emotional expr essions T o comfortably coexist with people, AIBO was designed with four legs, a head, and a tail, and a total of twenty internal actuators that enable it to sit or lie do wn in a natural way .
12 ERS-210 As the successor to the AIBO ERS-110/111, the AIBO ERS-210 is a second- generation entertainment robot featuring a wider repertoire of mov ements, more sensors, and the ability to incorporate optional AIBO-ware “Memory Stick” (not supplied) that allo ws you to raise AIBO and play with it.
13 Meet AIBO Checking the supplied accessories Check to make sure you ha ve the follo wing items before you play with AIBO. x A C adapter ERA-201P1 (1) x A C adapter con version plug (1) x Lithium Ion.
14 Pr eparing AIBO The battery pack supplied with AIBO has been charged to some extent. It is recommended that you charge the battery pack fully (page 19) before you play with AIBO. 1 Grasp AIBO securely by the body , turn it upside do wn, and open its cover .
15 Meet AIBO 3 Place AIBO on the floor as shown below . Place it on a flat, non-slippery surface, such as a carpet with a short nap. Notes • If you place AIBO on a slippery floor or a carpet with a long nap, it may tend to fall often, fail to go forw ard, or hav e a tendency to jam up.
16 Playing with AIBO When you push the pause b utton on AIBO’ s chest and AIBO’ s chest light lights up green, AIBO’ s internal application program acti vates and AIBO begins moving on its ow n . T o enjoy AIBO’ s full capabilities, you must use at least one of the follo wing AIBO-ware “Memory Stick” applications.
17 Meet AIBO When y ou press AIBO’ s head too forcefull y b AIBO will sho w anger through its eye lights. When y ou pet AIBO’ s head from back to fr ont a fe w times b AIBO’ s eye lights sho w joy . When y ou keep pressing AIBO’ s head for a few seconds b AIBO emits a musical tone and its eye lights light up.
18 If AIBO stops moving • Place AIBO on the floor and keep pressing on its head for a fe w seconds. AIBO stops moving whene ver you pick it up from the floor or if an object gets caught in one of AIBO’ s joints. AIBO’ s mode indicator flashes green at both times.
19 Meet AIBO When not playing with AIBO W e recommend that you charge the battery pack so AIBO will be ready to play at any time. Pausing AIBO Press the pause button on AIBO’ s chest. The chest light flashes green and turns of f. If y ou will not be playing with AIBO f or a long time It is recommended that you remov e the battery pack.
20 2 Connect the A C adapter conv ersion plug to AIBO’s charg ing terminal. 3 Connect the A C adapter to a wall outlet and place AIBO in the posture shown belo w . While the AC ada pter is connected, AIBO will not change from pause mode ev en if you press the pause button on its chest.
21 Meet AIBO Notes • If the chest light flashes orange while you are charging the battery pack, the charging may not be pr ogressing normally . Replace the battery pack with ne w one or contact AIBO Customer Link (page 3, 5).

27 Knowing more about AIBO 1 Charging terminal Connect the supplied AC adapter here with the supplied AC adapter con version plug. This terminal contacts the Energy Station (not supplied) when charging AIBO’s internal battery pack using the Energy Station.
28 Controls on the cor e unit The core unit appears when AIBO’ s head, legs, and tail ha ve been remo ved. For details on remo ving and attaching the respecti ve parts, see page 30. Rear panel Note Electronic components inside the core unit may be damaged if you handle it with static electricity built up on your body .

30 Removing and attaching AIBO’ s extr emities Y ou need to remove AIBO’ s legs, head, and tail to set the clock or v olume le vel of the musical tone, and to insert a PC card (not supplied). Y ou can also replace each part of AIBO’ s body with ne w parts which may be av ailable in near future to giv e AIBO a dif ferent appearance.
31 Knowing more about AIBO Removing AIBO’ s extremities 1 Press the pause b utton to pause AIBO. W ait until the chest light turns off. Note While AIBO is accessing the “Memory Stick, ” the battery pack lock indicator appears red. Do not remov e the “Memory Stick” during this time to prev ent damaging AIBO.
32 3 Slide the battery pack release le ver and r emove the battery pack. Hold your hand a gainst the battery pack when y ou remove it. Y ou can be injured by the battery pack if it falls out suddenly . Note When the battery pack lock indicator appears red, the battery pack is locke d.
33 Knowing more about AIBO Change the release pin inser tion angle part by part so that the pin reaches the depth of the release hole. 5 Remove AIBO’s head, tail, and legs from the cor e unit in the order of 1 to 6 sho wn in the illustration below .
34 Replacing the batter y pack It is usual to connect the A C adapter to AIBO to charge the battery pack while it is still inserted. Y ou can also change the battery pack in AIBO with another pack that has been charg ed on the optional Energy Station.

For details, refer to the User’ s Guide supplied with the AIBO-ware. Be sure to insert or remov e the “Memory Stick” only after pressing the pause b utton on AIBO’ s chest to make AIBO pause.
38 2 Insert the “Memory Stick, ” and close the cov er . Making sure that the ▼ mark faces do wnward, insert the “Memory Stick” into the “Memory Stick” insertion slot until it clicks into place.
39 Knowing more about AIBO Notes • T o prev ent damaging AIBO, do not remove the “Memory Stick” while the battery pack lock indicator appears red. • If you set the safety switch in the “Memory Stick” to LOCK, AIBO will not be able to sav e data to the “Memory Stick.
40 Inserting the optional PC card Be sure to insert the PC card only after pressing the pause button on AIBO’ s chest to make it pause. F or details on inserting an optional LAN card, refer to the operating instructions supplied with ERA-201D1 AIBO W ireless LAN Card.
41 Knowing more about AIBO 3 Flip the PC card r elease swich to the side. T o remove, flip the swich out. 4 Replace the left-front and left-hind hind legs.
42 Changing settings After removing AIBO’s e xtremities, you can change the follo wing settings using the display panel on the core unit. The display panel is normally blank. When you press the MODE button, one of the follo wing items appears for about 30 seconds.
43 Knowing more about AIBO 1 Press the MODE b utton repeatedly to display the time zone indication. 2 Press do wn the MODE button to select the time zone. The time zone indication starts to flash. 3 Press the + b utton repeatedly to set the time zone.
44 Setting the clock The time is displayed in a 24-hour clock. 1 Press the MODE b utton repeatedly to display the time indication. 2 Press down the MODE b utton to set the clock. The hour indication starts to flash. 3 Press the + b utton repeatedly to set the hour .

Setting the date 1 Press the MODE b utton repeatedly to display the date indication. Note Only the first two digits of the year are sho wn.

47 Knowing more about AIBO Setting the volume level of the musical tone The v olume of the musical tones emitted from AIBO’ s speaker can be adjusted in four le vels. If you select “0, ” AIBO’ s m usical tone is muted (no sound is emitted from the speaker).

54 Notes on use T o prev ent AIBO and its accessories from being damaged, observe the follo wing precautions. On handling AIBO • Do not use AIBO in places subject to vibrations, on an incline, or at a place where it might drop. • Do not press do wn hard on AIBO with your hand or elbow .
55 Additional information • Do not apply stickers to the color camera or the head co ver . • Do not point the color camera at the sun, no matter whether AIBO is turned on or off, as this may damage the camera. • Do not oil AIBO’ s joints or other movable parts.
56 On handling the AC adapter • Be sure to use only the supplied A C adapter to charge AIBO’ s battery pack. Using any other adapter ma y cause damage to AIBO . • Do not connect the A C adapter to electronic transformers designed for use by tra velers, as this may cause AIBO to heat up or become damaged.
57 Additional information T roubleshooting If you experience an y of the following dif ficulties, use this troubleshooting guide to help you remedy the problem. Should any problem persist, contact the AIBO Customer Link (page 5). Symptom Cause/Remedy AIBO does not react to release of the pause button.
58 Symptom Cause/Remedy AIBO continues to emit a sad melody and does not move when the pause button is released. The insertion of a “Memory Stick” without any AIBO-ware. The insertion of a “Memory Stick” that is not intended for AIBO. The battery pack is locked and cannot be replaced.
59 Additional information Symptom Cause/Remedy After picking AIBO up, it stops moving. AIBO stops moving whenever it is picked up from the floor . c Check that the mode indicator is flashing, then place AIBO on the floor .
60 Symptom Cause/Remedy The chest light does not turn off when you pr ess the pause button to make AIBO pause. There may be a pr oblem with the internal application. c Remove the battery pack (page 34). When the battery pack is locked, insert a pointing object into the battery pack unlock hole to remove it ( 4 on page 27).
