Chapter 1 Introduction 1-1 Overview The A+ Server 1012G-MTF is a short-depth server comprised of two main subsystems: the SC813MTS-350CBP 1U chassis and the H8SGL-F motherboard. Please refer to our web site for information on operating systems that have been certied for use with the A+ Server 1012G-MTF (www.
1-2 A+ SERVER 1012G-MTF USER'S MANUAL 1-2 Motherboard Features At the heart of the A+ Server 1012G-MTF lies the H8SGL-F , a single processor motherboard based on the AMD ® SR5650 and SP5100 Southbridge chipsets. This chipset functions as a Media and Communications Processor (MCP).

Chapter 2: Server Installation 2-1 Chapter 2 Server Installation 2-1 Overview This chapter provides a quick setup checklist to get your A+ Server 1012G-MTF up and running. Following the steps in the order given should enable you to have the system operational within a minimal amount of time.
2-2 A+ SERVER 1012G-MTF USER'S MANUAL Choosing a Setup Location • Leave enough clearance in front of the rack to enable you to open the front door completely (~25 inches) and approximately 30 inches of clearance in the back of the rack to allow for sufcient airow and ease in servicing.
Chapter 2: Server Installation 2-3 Rack Mounting Considerations Ambient Operating T emperature If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly , the ambient operating temperature of the rack environment may be greater than the ambient temperature of the room.
2-4 A+ SERVER 1012G-MTF USER'S MANUAL 2-5 Installing the System into a Rack This section provides information on installing the A+ Server 1012G-MTF into a rack unit with the rack rails provided. If the server has already been mounted into a rack, you can skip ahead to Sections 2-6 and 2-7.
Chapter 2: Server Installation 2-5 Installing the Rack Rails Determine where you want to place the A+ Server 1012G-MTF in the rack ( see Rack and Server Precautions in Section 2-3). Position the chassis rail guides at the desired location in the rack, keeping the sliding rail guide facing the inside of the rack.

See Chapter 5 for instructions on processor installation. 2. Y our 1012G-MTFF server system may have come with system memory already installed.

Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-1 Chapter 5 Advanced Motherboard Setup This chapter covers the steps required to install the H8SGL-F motherboard into the chassis, connect the data and power cables and install add-on cards. All jumpers and connections are described and a layout and quick reference chart are included for your reference.

Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-3 Connecting Power Cables The H8SGL-F has a 24-pin primary power supply connector (JPW1) for connection to the A TX power supply . In addition, an 8-pin processor power connector (JPW2) must also be connected to your power supply .

Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-5 Installing the Processors 1. Begin by removing the cover plate that protects the CPU. Lift the lever on the CPU socket until it points straight up. 2. With the lever raised, lift open the silver CPU retention plate.
5-6 A+ SERVER 1012G-MTF USER'S MANUAL T riangle 3. Use your thumb and your index nger to hold the CPU. Locate and align pin 1 of the CPU socket with pin 1 of the CPU. Both are marked with a triangle. 4. Align pin 1 of the CPU with pin 1 of the socket.
Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-7 Installing a Passive CPU Heatsink 1. Do not apply any thermal grease to the heatsink or the CPU die -- the required amount has already been applied. 2. Place the heatsink directly on top of the CPU so that the heat sink screws are aligned with the mounting holes on the back plate.

Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-9 Maximum Memory The H8SGL-F motherboard supports up to 256 GB of registered ECC or 64 GB of unbuffered ECC/non-ECC SDRAM in eight (8) DIMM slots.

Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-17 W ake-On-LAN The W ake-On-LAN header is designated JWOL. See the table on the right for pin denitions. Y ou must have a LAN card with a W ake-On-LAN connector and cable to use the W ake-On-LAN feature.

Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-19 Compact Flash Card PWR Connector A Compact Flash Card Power Connector is located at JWF1. For the Compact Flash Card to work properly , you will need to enable with JCF1 and connect a Compact Flash Card power cable to JWF1 rst.
5-20 A+ SERVER 1012G-MTF USER'S MANUAL 5-10 Jumper Settings Explanation of Jumpers T o modify the operation of the motherboard, jumpers can be used to choose between optional settings. Jumpers create shorts between two pins to change the function of the connector .
Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-21 VGA Enable/Disable JPG1 allows you to enable or disable the VGA port. The default position is on pins 1 and 2 to enable VGA.

Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-31 5-15 Motherboard Battery Caution : There is a danger of explosion if the onboard battery is installed upside down, which will reverse its polarites (see Figure 5-12). This battery must be replaced only with the same or an equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer (CR2032).

Chapter 6: Advanced Chassis Setup 6-1 Chapter 6 Advanced Chassis Setup This chapter covers the steps required to install components and perform maintenance on the SC813MTS-350CBP chassis. For component installation, follow the steps in the order given to eliminate the most common problems encountered.
6-2 A+ SERVER 1012G-MTF USER'S MANUAL Figure 6-2. Chassis Rear View 6-2 Control Panel The control panel (located on the front of the chassis) must be connected to the JF1 connector on the motherboard to provide you with system control buttons and status indicators.
Chapter 6: Advanced Chassis Setup 6-1 6-3 System Fans Six 4-cm high-performance fans provide the cooling for the A+ Server 1012G-MTF . The chassis includes air seals under the fans and at the chassis cross section, which separates the drive bay area from the motherboard area of the chassis to promote better airow .

6-2 A+ SERVER 1012G-MTF USER'S MANUAL DVD-ROM Drive Installation The top cover of the chassis must be opened to gain full access to the DVD-ROM drive bay . The 1012G-MTF accomodates only slim DVD-ROM drives. Side mounting brackets are needed to mount a slim DVD-ROM drive into the 1012G-MTF server .
Chapter 6: Advanced Chassis Setup 6-1 6-5 Power Supply The A+ Server 1012G-MTF has a single 350 W atts power supply . This power supply has the capability of operating at 100 - 240 input volts.

Chapter 7: BIOS 7-1 Chapter 7 BIOS 7-1 Introduction This chapter describes the AMIBIOS™ Setup utility for the H8SGL-F serverboard. The 16 Mb AMI BIOS® is stored in a ash chip and can be easily upgraded using a oppy disk-based program.
7-2 A+ SERVER 1012G-MTF USER'S MANUAL 7-2 Main Menu When you rst enter AMI BIOS Setup Utility , you will see the Main Menu screen. Y ou can always return to the Main Menu by selecting the Main tab on the top of the screen with the arrow keys.
Chapter 7: BIOS 7-3 W ait for F1 if Error This setting controls the system response when an error is detected during the boot sequence. When enabled, BIOS will stop the boot sequence when an error is detected, at which point you will need to press the F1 button to re-enter the BIOS setup menu.
7-4 A+ SERVER 1012G-MTF USER'S MANUAL Processor and Clock Options CPU Conguration This displays static information on the Module V ersion, Physical Count and Logical Count for the system's processor(s) and clock.
Chapter 7: BIOS 7-5 Advanced Chipset Control NorthBridge Conguration Memory Conguration Bank Interleaving Select Auto to automatically enable a bank-interleaving memory scheme when this function is supported by the processor . The options are Auto and Disabled.
7-6 A+ SERVER 1012G-MTF USER'S MANUAL DRAM Timing Conguration DRAM Timing Cong This option allows you to set the DRAM timing conguration for the system. Options include Auto or Manual. Memory Clock Speed This option sets the memory clock speed.
Chapter 7: BIOS 7-7 OnChip SA T A T ype Use this setting to set the OnChip SA T A type. Options include Native IDE, RAID , AHCI and Legacy IDE. RAID Codebase This submenu appears when you choose "RAID" from the "OnChip SA T A T ype" setting above.
7-8 A+ SERVER 1012G-MTF USER'S MANUAL which has a data transfer rate of 8.3 MBs. Select 3 to allow BIOS to use PIO mode 3, which has a data transfer rate of 1 1.1 MBs. Select 4 to allow BIOS to use PIO mode 4, which has a data transfer rate of 16.
Chapter 7: BIOS 7-9 This option sets the latency of all PCI devices on the PCI bus. Select a value to set the PCI latency in PCI clock cycles. Options are 32, 64 , 96, 128, 160, 192, 224 and 248. PCI IDE Busmaster Use this setting to Enable or Disable BIOS enabled uses of PCI Busmastering for reading or writing to IDE drives.
7-10 A+ SERVER 1012G-MTF USER'S MANUAL Serial 2 Address This option species the base I/O port address and Interrupt Request address of serial port 2. Select "Disabled" to prevent the serial port from accessing any system resources. When this option is set to "Disabled", the serial port physically becomes unavailable.
