Chapter 2: Installation 2-1 Chapter 2 Installation 2-1 Static-Sensitive Devices Electrostatic-Discharge (ESD) can damage electronic com ponents. T o prevent dam - age to your system board, it is important to handle it very carefully . The following measures are generally sufcient to protect your equipment from ESD.
2-2 X8ST3-F/X8STE User's Manual 2-2 Processor and Heatsink Installation When handling the processor package, avoid placing direct pressure on the label area of the fan. Notes: 1. Always connect the power cord last and always remove it before adding, re - moving or changing any hardware components.
Chapter 2: Installation 2-3 4. After removing the plastic cap, using your thumb and the index nger , hold the CPU at the north and south center edges. 5. Align the CPU key , the semi-circle cutout, against the socket key , the notch below the gold color dot on the side of the socket.
2-4 X8ST3-F/X8STE User's Manual Installing a Passive CPU Heatsink (#SNK-P0037) Heatsink Bracket (BKT -0023L, for screw-type heatsink only .) 1. If you use a screw-type heatsink, please install a heatsink bracket (BKT -0023L) on the reverse side of the motherboard before installing the heatsink.

Using a screwdriver , loosen and remove the heatsink screws from the motherboard in the sequence as shown in the picture on the right. 3. Hold the heatsink as shown and gently loosen it from the CPU by moving it from side to side.

Chapter 2: Installation 2-13 Ethernet Ports T wo Ethernet ports are located next to the VGA port on the IO Backplane. In addition, an IPMI Dedicated LAN is located above the USB ports. These ports accept RJ45 type cables. Note s: 1. The IPMI Dedicated LAN is for the X8ST3-F only .

Chapter 2: Installation 2-15 1. VGA X8ST3-F/X8STE 1 Video Con nector A Video (VGA) connector is located next to the COM Port on the IO backplane. This connector is used to provide video and CR T display . Refer to the board layout below for the location.
2-16 X8ST3-F/X8STE User's Manual Front Control Panel JF1 contains header pins for various buttons and indicators that are normally lo - cated on a control panel at the front of the chassis. These connectors are designed specically for use with Supermicro server chassis.

Chapter 4: AMI BIOS 4-1 Chapter 4 BIOS 4-1 Introduction This chapter describes the AMI BIOS Setup Utility for the X8ST3-F/X8STE . The AMI ROM BIOS is stored in a Flash EEPROM and can be easily updated. This chapter describes the basic navigation of the AMI BIOS Setup Utility setup screens.
4-2 X8ST3-F/X8STE User ’s Manual How to Start the Setup Utility Normally , the only visible Power-On Self-T est (POST) routine is the memory test. As the memory is being tested, press the <Delete> key to enter the main menu of the AMI BIOS Setup Utility .
Chapter 4: AMI BIOS 4-3 System Overview: The following BIOS information will be displayed: System Time/ System Date Use this option to change the system time and date. Highlight System Time or Sys - tem Date using the arrow keys. Enter new values through the keyboard.
4-4 X8ST3-F/X8STE User ’s Manual 4-3 Advanced Setup Congurations Use the arrow keys to select Boot Setup and hit <Enter> to access the submenu items: BOOT Feature Quick Boot If Enabled, this option will skip certain tests during POST to reduce the time needed for system boot.

Chapter 4: AMI BIOS 4-7 Intel AES-NI (When supported by the CPU) Intel® AES instructions are a new set of instructions available beginning with the the all new 2010 Intel® Core™ processor family based on the 32nm Intel® microarchitecture.
4-8 X8ST3-F/X8STE User ’s Manual C3 Auto Demotion When enabled, the CPU will conditionally demote C6 or C7 requests to C3 based on un-core auto-demote information. The options are Disabled and Enabled. ACPI T State This feature Enables the ACPI throttling support for the processor to save power .
Chapter 4: AMI BIOS 4-9 L0s is intended as a power saving state. It allows a link to quickly enter and recover form a power saving state without going through recovery . L1 is a power saving state that allows an additional power saving over L0s, but with additional resume (wake-up) latency .
