ix Conventions This manual describes how to install the user software for the T OSHIBA GA-1040 ™ and set up printing from Microsoft Windows and Apple M ac OS computers. F or information about setting up network ser vers and clients to use the GA-1040, see the Configur ation Guide .
x Introduction • The Printing G uide describes the printing features of the GA-1040 for users who send jobs via remote workstations on the network. • The J ob Management Guide explains the functions of the F ier y ® client utilities, including the Command W orkStation ™ , and how they can be used to manage jobs.

xii Introduction System r equirements T o install the GA-1040 user software on a Windows or M ac OS computer , the computer must be equipped with a built-in or external CD-R OM drive.
xiii System r equirements T o use the F ier y utilities (F ier y Link ™ ) you also need: • Either Windows 95/98, Windo ws Me, W indows 2000, or Windo ws NT 4.0 with NT Service P ack 5 or later • At least 48MB of RAM; 56MB of RAM is recommended T o use T opAccess, you also need: • Either N etscape Communicator v4.
xiv Introduction T o use T opAccess, you also need: • N etscape Communicator v4.5 or later , with Java enabled, or I nternet Explorer v4.0.1 or later , with Java enabled N OTE : N etscape continues to release frequent updates to its browser . 1 Setting up P ostScript and/or PCL printing with Windows 95/98/Me This chapter describes installing software and setting up printing from a Windows-based computer running Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT 4.
2 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer If you are printing using SMB (S er ver M essage Block) you can connect to the GA-1040 and install the printer drivers in a single procedure. T o configure the GA-1040 for SMB printing, see “Setting up SMB printing with Windows 95/98/M e” on page 13.

4 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer Using T wo-W ay Communication When your printer driver is first installed, variable print options ar e displayed as “P rinter’ s Default”. If y ou have a TCP/IP enabled networ k, you can automatically update your printer driver to reflect curr ent copier settings.

6 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer 4. In your computer’ s BIOS settings, set P arallel P ort Mode to ECP . T o access the BIOS settings, restart the computer and press the key indicated on your monitor as soon as the computer starts up.

8 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer 4. Double-click P orts. 5. Double-click the port with LPT1 in its name . 6. In the (LPT1) Properties dialog bo x, click the Driver tab and then click Update Driver . The U pdate Device Driver Wizar d appears.
9 Setting up P ostScript and/or PCL printing with Windows 95/98/Me 8. Choose “Display a list of all the driv ers in a specific location, so you can select the driver y ou want,” and then click Next. 9. Select “Show all har dware .” 10. From the Manuf acturers list, select “(Standar d port types).

In the V alue pop-up menu, select the Frame Type that corr esponds to the one set during GA-1040 Netw ork Setup.

In the Add P ort dialog box, v erify that the network path is updated and click OK. Y our print jobs are transmitted to the specified print queue on the No vell file ser ver .

T o install the P ostscript driver , browse to prntdrvrPrntdrvrPS_drvrWin_98_ME. T o install the PCL driver , browse to prntdrvrPrntdrvrPcl6_drvrWin_98_ME.
17 Setting up P ostScript and/or PCL printing with Windows NT 4.0 and/or Window s 2000 14. Using a maximum o f 31 characters , enter a name for the G A-1040 (or leave the def ault name) in the Printer name box, and choose whether y ou want the GA -1040 to be your default printer .

This procedure is described in “Completing the Windo ws NT 4.0 T CP/IP and LPR connection ” on page 23 and/or “Completing the Windo ws 2000 T CP/IP and LPR connection ” on page 26.

When you select print, your files are transmitted o ver the parallel port connection to the GA-1040. 4. Click the Sharing tab if you w ant to share the GA -1040 with network user s.
24 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer T O SET UP TCP/IP AND LPR PRINTING FOR W INDOWS NT 4.0 1. Open the Properties dialog bo x for the GA -1040, and click the P orts tab. 2. Click Add P ort. The available port types are displayed. 3. Select LPR P ort and click New P ort.

26 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer Completing the Window s 2000 TCP/IP and LPR connection Once you have installed the P ostScript printer driver and printer driver files, complete the setup for the TCP/IP and LPR connection as follo ws: • P repare the GA-1040 to accept print jobs using TCP/IP and lpr protocols.

Select Generic Network Car d as Standard for De vice Type if the de vice is not automatically detected, and click Next. 8. Click Finish to close the Add Standar d TCP/IP Printer P ort Wizard dialog bo x, and then click Close from the Printer P orts dialog box.

When installation is complete, a new printer window appears, with the name of the print queue on the N etW are ser ver .
30 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer Setting up SMB printing with Window s NT 4.0 and/or Window s 2000 If you do not have a N ovell network, y ou can print via SMB printing (also known as Windows printing or WINS printing).
31 Setting up P ostScript and/or PCL printing with Windows NT 4.0 and/or Window s 2000 2. Bro wse for the printer y ou would lik e to print to. The printer name you are bro wsing for is the name entered in the Server name set in Windows P rinting setup on the T opAccess.
32 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer 6. In the dialog box displaying lists o f manufacturer s and printers , click Have Disk. 7. If you ar e installing from the CD, type the name of the CD-ROM driv e (for e xample , D:), and click B rowse.
33 Setting up P ostScript and/or PCL printing with Windows NT 4.0 and/or Window s 2000 10. In the Printers bo x, select the appropriate GA -1040 file and click OK. N OTE : The printer driver with UC uses Letter as the default paper size; the printer driver with EU uses A4 as the default paper size.
34 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer T O SET UP IPP PRINTING WITH W INDOWS 2000 1. Click the Start button, choose Settings , and then choose Printers. 2. Double-click the Add Printer icon and click Ne xt. 3. Select Network printer and click Ne xt.
35 Installing GA -1040 softwar e Installing GA -1040 softw are The U ser Software CD includes a software installer for F ier y Link. F ier y utility software is supported on W indows 95/98/M e, Windows NT 4.0, and W indows 2000, and must be separately installed on each user’ s computer .
36 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer T O INSTALL F IERY L INK 1. Insert the User So ftware CD into the CD ROM driv e , and navigate to the softwar e fol de rs. The U ser Software CD automatically begins the printer driver installation when Auto insert notification is enabled on Windo ws.
37 Installing GA -1040 softwar e U se the following table as a guide when installing Fiery Link. F or specific instructions, read the information in each dialog box. Command W orkStation (option) The Command W orkStation software is on the Command W orkS tation CD.
38 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer T O INSTALL C OMMAND W ORK S TATION SOFTWARE 1. Insert the Command W orkStation CD. The Command W orkStation CD automatically begins the installation process with Auto insert notification enabled on W indows, which is the default setting.
39 Using the so ftware f or the first time Using the so ftwar e for the fir st time Before you can use the newly installed softwar e, you must properly configure the connection to the GA-1040.
40 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer 3. Click the Edit Fiery List button. The Edit M y Fiery List dialog box opens, and all F ier ys found appear in the A vailable F ier ys area of the dialog box. N OTE : Only F ier ys that support F ier y Link appear in the A vailable Fierys area.
41 Using the so ftware f or the first time Repeat step 4 for each GA-1040 you would like to add to the M y F iery List. 5. Click Apply to accept the changes to My Fiery List. 6. Click OK. T O MANUALLY CONFIGURE THE CONNECTION FOR F IERY L INK 1. Click the Manual tab .

44 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer 3. T o find all GA -1040 within an IP address r ange, enter an IP A ddress in the Fr om IP field, and an IP address in the T o IP field, and click the arrow b utton. Repeat step 3 for each IP address range y ou would like to search.

47 Using the so ftware f or the first time 3. Enter the IP address and subnet to sear ch, and click the arrow b utton. The IP address and subnet to be searched appears in the IP Range/S ubnet Addr . list. Repeat this procedur e for each IP address and subnet you would like to search.
48 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer 4. Click Search. When the search is complete, all GA-1040s found appear in the A vailable F ier ys area of the dialog box. If the GA-1040 was not found, and you would like to search again using the same parameters, click Refresh.
49 Using the so ftware f or the first time The GA-1040 appears in the M y Fiery List. Repeat step 5 for each GA-1040 you would like to add to the M y F iery List.
50 Installing User So ftware on a Windo ws Computer 3. Enter the appropriate inf ormation for the GA -1040. Nickname —Enter a name for the GA-1040. This name can be any name you wish; it does not have to match the actual Server N ame of the GA-1040.
51 Copying the printer description files f or Windows Modifying the configuration Y ou should edit the configuration whenever there is any change to your GA-1040 server or network, such as a server name or IP address. F irst change the specific GA-1040 Setup information before configuring the connection.

53 Installing Mac OS softw are The general steps for installing the GA-1040 user software and setting up printing on a Mac OS computer are: • Install the Adobe P ostScript printer driver and P ostScript Printer Description file (PPD). • Set up the GA-1040 in the Chooser .
54 Installing User So ftware on a Mac OS Computer T O INSTALL THE A DOBE PS PRINTER DRIVER AND PPD FILE 1. On the User So ftware CD, open the English : Printer Driver f older . If you ar e installing from files you do wnloaded using W ebT ools, open the Printer Driver f older on your hard disk.
55 Setting up the GA -1040 as a PostScript printer Setting up the GA -1040 in the Chooser After you install the Adobe P ostScript printer driver and PPD file (see “Setting up the GA-1040 as a P ostScript printer” on page 53), y ou need to set up the GA-1040 in the Chooser in order to take full advantage of its featur es.

The AdobePS printer driver automatically selects the corr ect PPD file for your GA-1040. N OTE : Y ou will need to set up each print connection separately .

The W arning dialog box “No Fiery s configured, please select a Fiery” appear s. Click OK. N OTE : If the F ier y is located on a different subnet an Err or dialog box appears.

61 Installing GA -1040 softwar e and fonts T O MANUALLY CONFIGURE THE CONNECTION FOR F IERY L INK 1. Click the Manual tab . Enter the DNS name or IP address of the G A-1040 and click the arro w button. When the arrow button is clicked, F iery Link checks for the specified GA-1040.
62 Installing User So ftware on a Mac OS Computer 2. T o give the G A-1040 a nickname , select it in the My Fiery List and click Modify . 3. Select Use Nickname , and enter a nickname for the G A-1040. 4. Click OK. 5. Click Apply to accept the changes to My Fiery List.

70 Installing User So ftware on a Mac OS Computer Fonts The Fonts on the U ser Software CD includes screen and printer fonts that correspond to the 136 built-in P ostScript printer fonts on the GA-1040. The F ont installer copies both kinds of fonts to the System folder : F onts folder on your hard disk.
71 Setting up T opAccess T opAccess allo w you to manage your GA-1040 remotely fr om the Internet or from your company ’ s intranet. The GA-1040 has its own home page, from which you ar e able to select from a variety of functions. F or more information on using W ebtools, see the P rinting Guide and the Configur ation Guide.
72 Setting Up T opAccess T O SET UP T OP A CCESS ON THE GA-1040 (S TATIC IP, RARP, BOOTP) 1. Press the PRINTER/NETW ORK key , then press ON/OFF and OFF LINE. 2. Press SETTING and ADMIN. 3. Enter the GA -1040 password and pr ess SET . 4. Press Pr otocol Setup>TCP/IP>Ethernet.
73 Using the Installer W ebT ool Using the Installer W ebT ool The Installer W ebT ool, offered from the F iery W ebT ools website, allows y ou to easily download printer drivers dir ectly from the from the GA-1040 to your workstation. Access F ier y W ebT ools from the T opAccess site.
74 Setting Up T opAccess 4. Select a login lev el, enter a password if necessary , and click OK. N o password is required to log in as Guest. Y ou have full access to the Installer W ebT ool when logged in as Guest. 5. Click the Installer button. 6. Under the name of y our operating sy stem, click “Printer Files.

On a Window s computer Setting up printing on Window s NT W orkstations If you have problems installing the GA-1040 with Windows NT , try installing another P ostScript printer (such as the Apple LaserW riter IIg), and then install the GA-1040.
78 Tr oubleshooting 3. Make sur e that the connection is configured correctly f or your site . T o check the current configuration, launch a F iery utility and choose Open from the F ile menu. Select the GA-1040 and click Modify to see curr ent settings.
