This section will provide an introduction to the W orkCentre M24 which is also referred to as the W orkCentre 24. For more information about copy fe atures, refer to the section entitled Copier Features in this ch apter .

1–4 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Control Panel The Control Panel is used t o program individual jobs. • The Numeric Keyp ad is used to enter copy quantity or other numeric information. • The Contrast Dial adjust s the brightness of the touch screen. • The T ouch Screen is where you make selections for the jobs you are programming.
1–5 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Interrupt S tops the prin ter/copier during the current job. This allows another job to be run. There are two in dications that the job has been interrupted: • The printer/copier displays a message indicating that Job Interrupt has been selected, a nd it is ready to co py .
1–6 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Job Memory Indicator light s when data is stored in the machine's memory . Online Indicator light s when data is being received fro m a client. Features Allows you to alternate betwe en scanning and copying feature screens.
1–7 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) T ouch Screen Press the buttons and t abs displayed in the T ouch Screen to select features or respond to on screen instructions. The selected buttons are highlighted to indicate activation . Buttons that do not have three-dimensional shadows are not active, and cannot be selected.
1–8 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Power Switch The power switch is located on the rig ht top corner of the mach ine. Press the switch to the ( | ) position to turn the p ower on. Ground Fault Protector Located at the rear o f the machine where the power cord att aches.

1–12 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Making Copies from the Document Glass 1 Open the Document Cover . 2 Place the original face down on the Docume nt Glass, aligning the left rear corner with the registration guide. 3 Close the cover before making a copy .
1–13 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Making Copies Using Features The feature tabs on the T ouch Screen enable you to configure the printer/copier to suit your copying needs. The procedure below leads you quickly through a number of features you may want to use in makin g copies.
1–14 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) 4 Select an option under 2 Sided if a setting other than th e default, 1 to 1 Sided, is desired. If another option is desired, perform one o f the following: • 1 to 1 Sided for default one-sided copie s. • 1 to 2 Sided for two-sided copies from one-sid ed input.
1–15 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) 6 Select an option in Paper Supply if a tray ot her than the default, Auto Paper , is desired. If another option is desired, perform one o f the following: • Press the desired Paper Supply option on the Ba sic Copying screen.
1–16 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) 9 If other features are desired, se lect the appropriate feature t ab and feature button on the T ouch Screen. 10 Perform one of the following: • If you use the Duplex Automatic Document Feeder , place the document face up into the Original Input Area.
1–17 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Loading Paper This section contains basic information ab out loading p aper and transparencies, and about using p aper trays. It also includes some paper usage guidelines for the W orkCentre 24. For more information about the materials you can use, refer to the Recommended Materials for the W orkCentre 24.
1–18 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Auto Size Detect for T ray 5 (Byp ass) Certain st andard paper sizes can be automatically de tected in T ray 5 (Bypass) by selecting Auto Size Detect on th e T ray 5 programming screen. The following p aper sizes can be used with the Auto Size Detect feature: • US/Canada - 5.
1–19 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Loading Stock Paper Load the paper into T rays 1, 2, 3, and 4 with the preferred printing side up. Load the pap er into T ray 5 (Bypass) with the pre ferred printing side down. The capa city of the tray varies with the p aper weight that is loaded in the tray .
1–20 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) NOTE: Do not load paper above the fill line of the p aper tray edge guides. NOTE: Fan the desired paper before loading it into the T ray . S traighten the p aper stack each time the paper tray is opened. Close the paper tray slowly to avoid shifting the p aper stack.
1–21 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) T ransp arencies T ransparencies can only be fed from T ray 5 (Bypass). S tripeless transparencies are re commended. S triped transp arencies must be loaded with the stripe face up, on the left side of the tray . NOTE: Use only the transparencies recomme nded in the Recommended Materials for the W orkCentre 24 .
1–22 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Loading Paper into T rays 1, 2, 3, and 4 1 T o load a paper tray , pull the tray out. 2 Fan the paper and lo ad the desired paper into the tray by aligning the edge of the paper against the le ft edge of the tray . The side to be copied should be facing up.
1–23 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) 3 Fan the p aper and load p aper with the side t o be copied or printed on facing down. Insert the p aper lightly along the paper guide on the front side of the machine until it comes to a stop. 4 Adjust the back edge p aper guide until it ligh tly touches the paper .
1–24 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Loading SRA3 Paper into T ray 5 (Byp ass) 1 Open T ray 5 (Bypass) by grasping the tray and ge ntly pushing it away and down from the printer/copier . 2 Adjust the front edge p aper guide to the closest posit ion forward beyond the 12x18 in.
1–25 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Copier Features Basic Copying T ab Below is a brief description o f each feature available on the Ba sic Copying tab. Each feature is explained in det ail on the following pages. Output Color Allows you to select the colors to be u sed for copying.
1–26 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Output Color The Output Color feature allows you to sele ct the desired output color . The following options are ava ilable: Auto The Auto Color option enables the copier to determine if the document is black and white or color .
1–27 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Y ou can select several Output Color options from the Basic Copying tab or se lect the More… button to get a complete set of options. 1 On the Basic Copying tab select More… under Outp ut Color to display the Output Color screen.
1–28 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) 2 Sided Use the 2-Sided feature to select one or t wo-sided originals, with options for one or two-sided output. The following options are ava ilable: 1 to 1 Sided Makes one-sided co pies from one-sided input. This is the defau lt setting.

1–31 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Reduce/Enlarge The Reduce/Enlarge featu re allows you to copy the image at different ma gnifications. Copies may be reduced to 25% or enlarged to 400%, in 1% increment s. The following options are ava ilable: 100% Copies are the same size as the original.
1–32 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Va r i a b l e % Select the V ariable% option to enter the desired percent age for Reduce/Enlarge. Use either the up and down arrows or th e number buttons that display on the T ouch Screen.

1–35 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Paper Supply The Paper Supply option enab les you to select output p aper size and type. The Basic Copying t ab displays the Auto Paper selection feature. This option enables the copier t o automatically detect the original document size and select the same st andard size p aper from T rays 1,2, 3, or 4.
1–36 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Programming the Paper Supply for T ray 5 (Byp ass) Y ou must select the paper size and pa per type when loading paper into T ray 5 (Bypa ss). Auto Size Detect can be used with standard size p aper . 1 On the Basic Copying tab select More… under Paper Supp ly .
1–37 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) 4 Select the appropriate Paper T ype using the up and down arrow buttons. Y ou can select Plain, Bond, Recycled, T ransparency , and Lightweight - Extra Heavyweight p aper . 5 Select Save to return to the Paper Supply screen.

The following options are ava ilable: Auto The copier automatica lly determines which output mode (collated or uncollated) for the job and delivers the copies to the output tray .
1–43 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) 1 On the Added Features ta b select Output . 2 Select the desired option: •A u t o • Collated • Uncollated 3 If you have a Finisher (optional a ccessory), select the desired Output Destination: • Center Output T ray • Finisher T ray 4 Select Star t to make copies or Save to select additional features.
1–44 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Stap li n g This section describes the procedure for programming the Output feature to st aple output. Y ou must have a Finisher (optio nal accessory) to staple output. 1 On the Added Features ta b select Output . 2 Select Collated/St apling .
1–45 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Margin Shift The Margin Shift feature allows you to shift the p osition of the image on the copy . The image can be centered on th e copy or moved to the top, bottom, left or righ t. When copying both sides, different se ttings can be set for Side 1 and Sid e 2.
1–46 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Using the Auto Center Feature 1 On the Added Features ta b select Margin Shift . 2 Select Auto Center . 3 Select Star t to make copies or Save to select additional features.

1–48 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Border Erase The Border Erase feature enables you to eliminate unwanted marks near the edges of the original from the output copy . The range for Border Erase is 0 through 50mm in 1mm incre ments. Border Erase options can be used individually or combined together: T op & Bottom For Normal the default is 2mm.
1–49 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) 1 On the Added Features ta b select Bo rder Erase . 2 Select V ariable Erase . 3 Press the up or down arrows to increase or decre ase the Border Erase amount(s) for T op & Bottom, Left & Right, and Center . 4 Select the icon that most closely resembles the Origina l Orientation for the lo aded document(s).
1–50 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Image Quality T ab Below is a brief description of each feature available on the Image Quality tab. Each f eature is explained in det ail on the following pages. Original T ype Enables you to select the type of original document you wish t o copy to ensure optimum copy quality .
1–51 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Original T ype The Original T ype feature enables you to defin e the kind of original document you wish to copy . The copier automatically makes adjustments to optimize th e copy based on the original type.
1–52 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) 1 On the Image Quality t ab select Original T ype . 2 Select the type of Original: • T ext & Photo Select the Photo T ype that best describes the photo in the orig.
1–53 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Auto Exposure This feature prevent s the background color of an orig inal from appearing on the output co py . A newspaper or colored p aper are examples of this type of original. 1 On the Image Quality t ab select Auto Exposure .
1–54 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Lighter/Darker/Contrast The Lighter/Darker feature enab les you to adjust the overall lightness or darkness of the output copy . Contrast allows you to adjust the clearness of the image. If you increase the Contrast, the copy appears sharp & vivid a nd is composed of mainly high and low density element s.
1–55 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Sharpness/Saturation The Sharpness feature allo ws you to adjust the amoun t of edge definition on the copies. The Colo r Saturation feature allows you to adjust the overall richness of color o n the copy . There are five levels of adjustment for each feature.
1–56 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Color Shift The Color Shift feature allows you to shift all of t he copy colors toward the adjacent hue. If you select one of the W arm buttons, the red colors shift toward the yellow hue, the green colors shift toward the cyan hue, and the blue colors shift toward the magenta hue.
1–57 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Color Balance The Color Balance feature allows you to adju st the balance between colors and the overall amo unt of color on the output copies. Y ou can adjust the levels of all four process colors (Y ellow , Magenta, Cyan, and Black) for their low , medium and high density ranges.
1–58 U SER G UIDE (C OPIER ) Image Quality Preset s The Image Quality Preset s feature automatically changes Image Quality settings to produce various predetermine d effe cts. 3–1 3. User Guide (Scan) Scanning Overview Y our new Xerox WorkCentre M24 printer/copier , also referred to as the WorkCen tre 24, can also be used as a scanner .
3–2 U SER G UIDE (S CAN ) Scanning Using Mailboxes The scanner function is available when you are conn ected to the network environment using TCP/IP pro tocol. Y ou can scan your originals using the printer/copier and apply most of the features to scanned output, just a s when making copies.
3–3 U SER G UIDE (S CAN ) How to Scan Using Mailboxes Y ou can scan originals, and then store the scanned document in mailboxes. The scanned document can be saved in JPEG or TIFF format. NOTE: In order to use this machine as a scanner , the IP address, Port, and mailboxes must be prope rly configured.

3–17 U SER G UIDE (S CAN ) Bound Originals The Bound Originals feature enables yo u to scan bound originals such as books, magazines or journals, notebooks, glued forms, or stapled set s . When this feature is selected, each p age is scanned into a separate file.

5–1 5. User Guide (T roubleshooting) The Xerox W orkCentre M24, also referred to as the WorkCent re 24, is designed to help you fin d and solve problems as they happen. The printer/copier can detect problems and display the corrective action on the screen.
