Chapter 1 10 Volume s ettings 1 Ring v ol ume 1 You can cho os e a range of ring v olum e le ve l s , fr om High to Off . While in Fax mode press or to adjust the volume l evel. The L CD wi ll show the current set ting, and each key p ress will chang e the volume to the next level.
11 2 2 Loading pa per a nd print media 2 The ma chine can feed pape r fr om th e standard pape r tray, optional lower tray or multi-purpo se t ray. W hen you put pap er into the paper t ray, note the following: If y our appli cation sof tware supp orts paper s ize selection on the p rint m enu, you can select it throug h the software.
Chapter 2 12 b While pressin g the green paper-gui de release lever (1), slide the paper guides to f it the paper size you are loading in the tray. Make sure that the guides a re firmly in t he slots. c Fan t he stac k of p aper well to avoi d paper jam s and m isfeeds.
Loadi ng paper 13 2 Lo ad ing p aper in t he mult i- pu rpose tr ay (MP tray ) 2 You can load up to 3 envelopes or special print media in the M P tray or up to 50 shee ts of plain paper. Us e this tray to print or cop y on thick pa per, bond paper, labels or e nvelopes.
Chapter 2 14 c Put paper in the MP tray and make sure: The paper stays under th e maximum paper mark (1). The top of paper edge is positioned between the arrows (2). The side to be pri n ted on must be fac e u p with t he leading edge (top of the paper) i n first.
Loadi ng paper 15 2 Printi ng on envelopes and thi ck paper from the MP tray 2 Before loadi ng, press t he corners an d sid es of the envelopes to make them as flat as pos sib l e . a Open the MP tray and lower it ge ntly. b Pull out the MP tray support and unfold the flap (1).
Chapter 2 16 d Put up to 3 envelop es or up to 25 shee ts of thick paper (163 gsm) in the MP tray. If you add more envelopes or paper it may cause a jam. Make sure: The top of envelope edge is positioned between the arrows (1). The side to be pri n ted on must be fac e u p .

Chapter 2 20 Tra y Use in co py mode 2 You can change the priority t ray that the machine will u se for pri nting cop ies. When y ou choose Tray#1 Only , MP Only or Tray#2 Only 1 , the machine pulls the paper onl y f rom t hat t ray. If t he selected t ray is out of pa per, No Paper will appear on t he LCD.

Chapter 2 22 Acceptabl e paper an d other print media 2 Print qu ality m ay vary ac cording to the t ype of paper you are using. You can u se t he following ty pes o f print media : thin paper, plain paper, thick paper, bond pa per, recycled paper, glossy paper, labels o r env elopes.

Chapter 2 24 Hand ling an d us ing s pecia l pape r 2 The machine is designed to work well with most types of xerogra phic and bond paper. Howeve r, s o me paper variables may have an effect on print quality or handling reliability. Always test sam ples of pa per be fore purchasin g to en sure des irable pe rformanc e.
Loadi ng paper 25 2 Envelopes 2 Most envelopes designed f or las er printers will be suit a ble f or your machine. However, some env elopes may h av e feed and print- quality prob lem s becau se of the way they have been made.
Chapter 2 26 Labels 2 The ma chine will print on most types of labels designed f or u se w ith a las er machine. L abels should hav e an a dhesive that is acrylic-bas ed since this material is more stable at the high temperatu res in the fuser unit.
27 3 3 How to load documents 3 You can s end a fax, make copies, and scan from the ADF (Autom atic Docum ent F eeder) and the scanner glass . Us in g the aut om a tic do cu men t f eed er ( AD F ) 3 The A DF can hold up t o 35 pa ges and feeds each sheet individually.

33 5 5 Recei ve m odes 5 You must choos e a recei ve mo de depending on the ex ternal de vices and t elephone s ervices you have on your line. Choo si ng the r ece i ve mo de 5 By defa ult, your machin e will automatically receive any faxes that are s e nt t o i t.
Chapter 5 34 Using rece ive modes 5 Some rec eive m odes answer faxes autom atically ( Fax O nly and Fax/Tel ). You may want to change the Ring Delay before using these modes. (See Ring Del ay on page 35.) Fax Only 5 Fax Only m ode will automatically answer every call as a f a x.
Receivi ng a fax 35 5 Recei ve Mode se ttings 5 Ring De lay 5 The Ring Delay setting sets the number of times the mac hine rings before it answers in Fax Only and Fax/Tel modes. How to scan to a computer 59 11 e Set the file type for saving to a folder. By default, the scanned data is saved as JPEG ( *. jpg) . Cli ck Co nf ig ur at io n , and t hen selec t Butto n settings , Scan and File . The configuration dialog box appears.

70 d Hold the handle of the t oner cartridge and slight ly pus h it toward t he machine to unlock it. T he n pull it out of the drum unit. Repeat this for all the toner ca rt r i dg e s. WARNING DO NOT put a toner cartri dge into a fire. I t could explode, resulting in injuri e s.
Routine maint enanc e 71 A e Push to release the latches of the corona wire cover (1), and then open t he cover. f Clean the co rona w ire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab f rom left to right and right to l eft several times. Note Be sure to return the tab to the home positi on ( a ) (1).
72 g Close the corona wi re cover. h Repeat st eps e to g to c lean eac h of three remaining coron a wires. i Unpack the ne w t oner cartridge. G ently shake it from si de to s ide s everal times to distribute t he toner even ly in side the cartridge.
Routine maint enanc e 73 A j Pull off t he protective cover. IMPORTAN T Put the toner cartridge in the dru m unit immedi ately after you have removed the pro tective cover. To prevent any degradat ion to the print qu ality, DO NOT touch the shad ed parts shown in the illu st ra tio ns .
74 l Push the drum unit in until i t stops. m Cl ose th e fr o n t cov e r of t he m ac h i ne. Note After you replace a toner cartri dge, DO NOT turn off t h e machine's power switch or open the front cover until t he LCD clears the Please Wait messag e and returns to Ready mod e.

We recomm end a Brother Original drum unit be instal led at this time. After replac ement, reset the d rum coun ter by following the i nstructions included wi th th e new drum unit.
76 c Hold the green handle of the drum unit. Pull the drum unit ou t until it stops. d Turn the green l ock lever (1) at the left of the machine anticlockwise to the release position. Holding the green handles of the drum u nit, lift the front of the drum u nit and rem ove it f rom th e machine.

78 IMPORTAN T • Han dle the t oner cartridge caref ully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold wat er at once. • We recomm end that you p lace the drum unit and.

80 j Turn the gree n lock l ever (1) clockwise to t h e lock position. k Push the drum unit in until i t stops. l Cl ose th e fr o n t cov e r of t he m ac h i ne. Resetting the dr um counter A When y ou repl ace a drum u nit with a n ew one, you need to reset the drum counter by completing the following ste ps: a Pre ss Me n u , 8 , 4 .
