PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 7 Introduction Unpacking your PaperJet 50 When you unpack you should have: PaperJet 50 with attached mains power cable and fitted 3-pin plug.
Never put foreign bodies into the fax machine. Their accidental contact with powered par ts may cause a fire or electric shocks. Do not expose to direct sunlight. Do not stand your fax machine on carpets or other sur faces which generate fibr es, or place it in locations preventing free flow of air over its sur faces.
PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 9 S etting up 1 Plan the location of your PaperJet 50 Place your PaperJet 50 on a stable, flat sur face. Make sure it is close enough to the telephone and mains power sockets so that cables will reach. Remember to leave enough room at the front of the machine for documents to come out.
PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 10 Line connection from answer machine. NO TE The socket in the back of the line plug is for line connection of an answering machine. 5 Connect the mains power Plug into the mains power and switch on. Y our PaperJet 50 per forms a quick self-test.

If you need to use a dif ferent size you will need to change the setting as shown below . To ensure your PaperJet is set to print on the paper size you are using, check the print for mat setting.

Press the Function button until the display shows FAX SET UP Display shows DATE AND TIME Display shows FORMAT: DD/MM/YY Y ou can select a dif ferent for mat by pressing the < > buttons.

PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 15 Using your P aperJet 50 Sending faxes What type of paper you can use Dimensions: • width 148mm – 216mm. • length 216mm – 600mm. Thickness: • 60 - 90gsm max 5 sheets. • 50 -140gsm 1 sheet at a time.
T o send a fax Place document face down in the document feeder . If necessar y set the Contrast and Resolution settings. Use the keypad to dial the number you want. Press the Start button. The number is dialled before your fax is scanned and sent. When the fax has been sent, the display shows TX COMPLETED to confir m a successful transmission.
T o redial the last number Press the Last Number button twice. PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 17 T o dial using the handset Place document face down in the document feeder . If necessar y set the Contrast and Resolution settings. Pick up the handset and listen via the earpiece.

NO TE To cancel your pre-set fax transmission, press the Stop button or remove the document from the document feeder .
Volume PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 19 T o fax from memory Y our PaperJet 50 has a memor y which lets you store one document for sending at a pre-set time. Place document face down in the document feeder . If necessar y set the Contrast and Resolution settings.
Receiving faxes By pressing the RX MODE button you can set your PaperJet 50 to receive a document in four dif fer ent ways: Press to display the following settings. AUTOMATIC RX – This is Automatic reception. Y our fax machine automatically answers fax calls (this is the default setting).
T o store a one touch entry Using the codes 0-9, your PaperJet 50 has 10 one-touch memories under which you can store a name, fax number and telephone number . Y ou can stor e numbers up to 52 digits long, and names up to 16 characters long, in each one-touch memor y .

A new name and number will over write the existing entr y selecting the location you want to change or delete.

A new name and number will over write the existing entr y . To edit an entr y , press the <> buttons to move the cursor over the digit or character you want to change and enter the cor rect one.

T o request immediate print-outs Y ou can get print-outs of transmission, activity and broadcasting repor ts. Press until the display shows PRINT OUT REPORT Display shows LAST TX REPORT Press to select the repor t you want to print: LAST TX REPORT LAST BROAD.

T o search through the speed dial entries Do not put a document in the document feeder . Y ou can dial without lifting the handset Press the Speed dial button. Display shows TEL CALL CODE OR < > Press to scroll thr ough the entries until the one you want is displayed.

PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 29 Additional features T o set the print area of a document Y ou can set the print ar ea of a received fax to 70% 76%, 80% or 94% of the original. The recommended r eduction settings are: A4 = 94%, Letter = 80%, Legal = Of f (no reduction).
T o adjust the ringer volume Y ou can switch between High, Medium, Low and Of f. The default setting is High. Press until the display shows FAX SET-UP Display shows DATE AND TIME Display shows VARIOUS SETTINGS Press until the display shows RING VOLUME: HIGH Press to switch between the settings HIGH , MEDIUM , LOW and OFF .
PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 31 T o adjust the duration of the phone call alert beeps When your PaperJet 50 is set to PHONE/FAX RX mode it automatically answers all calls. If it is a phone call, it is set to beep for 20 seconds to aler t you to pick up the handset.
T o adjust the volume of the buzzer Press until the display shows FAX SET-UP Display shows DATE AND TIME Display shows VARIOUS SETTINGS Press until the display shows BUZZER VOL.LOW Press to switch between HIGH , MEDIUM , LOW and OFF . Press to confir m the option displayed.
PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 33 T o switch ECM mode on/off ECM (Er ror Cor rection Mode) is a system for cor recting er rors caused by inter fer ence on the line. When switched on, the display shows E when sending or receiving to/from another machine using ECM.
T o set a document for polling by another fax machine Inser t a document in the document feeder . Display shows DOCUMENT READY Set the resolution and contrast if necessar y . Press until the display shows POLLING TX Press twice. Display shows AUTOMATIC RX POLLING TX SET To cancel polling remove the document from the feeder .

PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 36 T o change the silence detection time Press until the display shows INSTALLATION . Display shows TEL.LINE SET UP . Press until the display shows SILENCE LAPSE: 6 . Press to set the lapse time to 3 , 4 , 6 , 8 , 10 seconds or NO (of f).
PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 37 Connecting to a switchboard Y ou can stor e the access code required to get an outside line so that you only have to press the EXTERNAL button. W ith some switchboards you may also need to switch your PaperJet 50 from TONE dialling to PULSE dialling.
Using the External button Y ou can use the External button to inser t the access code before numbers stored in the one touch and speed dial memories. Before entering the number (pages 21-22), press External , an E will appear in the display , and continue entering the number as nor mal.
PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 39 Help The error light comes on and an error message is displayed. An er ror repor t is automatically printed. Press the Stop button to reset the machine and check the message against the Er ror Messages list, page 42 .
PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 40 Y our machine does not receive faxes automatically • Check that is has not been set for manual reception. • Check that you have ink and paper . • Check for paperjams. Y ou cannot print faxes or copy documents • Check for paper jams.

PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 44 Maintenance Cleaning your PaperJet 50 First disconnect it from the mains power supply and the telephone line. Clean with a cloth dampened with diluted washing-up liquid. Never use household polish as this may damage your fax machine.
2 Gently pull the black lever at the side of the printhead assembly to the side to release the car tridge. 3 Lift out the car tridge. 4 Remove the new car tridge from its packaging. Holding it by the finger grip, peel of f the protective film. 5 Inser t the new car tridge into the printhead until it clicks into place.
PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 46 6 Close the cover T o clean the print head and nozzles If the printing quality deteriorates you can quickly clear the print head and test the nozzles with a print-out showing their condition.
PaperJet 50 user guide – Edition 3 – 29.8.00 47 Cleaning the print head pad Lift the printer compar tment cover . Move the print car tridge to the right hand side of the machine. Clean excess ink of f the print head pad with a dr y cotton swab. Close the cover .
Removing jammed pages If a document or sheet of paper becomes jammed while sending a fax or during copying the display shows REMOVE DOCUMENT, PRESS If paper used to print received faxes or photocopies becomes jammed the display shows PAPER ERROR, PRESS First tr y ejecting the paper by pressing the Stop button.
